A Tech-ish Sort of Day

August 16, 2016 at 10:10 am by Claudia

Yesterday will now be labeled “Tech Day.”

It started off with Don and I taking turns as we waited for the FedEx guy to deliver Don’s new iPhone. It arrived while I happened to be out watering and I signed for it. Then came the ‘orientation session’ where I showed Don how to activate it, etc.

I know guys are supposed to be adept with all things high tech, but in our house, that role seems to be mine. I’m always a step or three or four ahead of Don and I guide him through these things, whether it’s the remote, or a laptop, or a phone. Once we ironed out a misstep with Don’s Apple ID number, we were good to go. I mentioned to Don that he might want to get a case as soon as possible, because the newer phones are slimmer and can quite easily be dropped.

Then I went upstairs to work on my new drawer unit. Shortly after that, Don called up to me, saying he thought he should get a case ASAP. So we jumped in the car and went to a Verizon store in a neighboring town.

Here is where it gets tech-ish. Don picked out his case. I wandered next door to the Rite-Aid to get a couple of things. I came back to the Verizon store and the woman who was helping us – she was really great – asked if we had a tempered glass insert to protect the glass on the iPhone. No, I didn’t, though I had certainly thought about getting one. Next thing I knew, we were both getting the tempered glass.

Then…she mentioned a special deal on iPads, specifically the iPad Air. Now, up until recently I had no desire for an iPad, thinking I had my phone and my laptop. But this was such a good deal (a slightly older model, just like our iPhone 6.) I knew I would use it a lot both here and on the road, where I could take it to rehearsals and use it for research and downtime. I love my phone and I use it all the time, but for research? I need a bigger screen. So, after gulping a bit, I went for it.

And then felt guilty. Don, ever wonderful, urged me to get it and said he didn’t want to hear me expressing any regrets once we left the store.

Because he knows me.

The mobile version of the blog looks pretty good! After charging it last night, I synced it, and today I will spend some time getting to know the newest addition to my Apple family.

Still feeling guilty.

In other news, I did a little prettifying of the IKEA drawers:

8-16 drawer1

I am not a scrapbooker, but I do have a pad of scrapbook paper that’s been hanging around here for a while. So I cut the paper to fit the bottom of the drawer.

Each drawer uses a different design:

8-16 drawer3

8-16 drawer2

Six drawers = six different designs.

Then I went back to something I had done in my youth – gosh I must have been sixteen or so when I got my first file cabinet – and cut the scrapbook paper to fit into the label slot on the front of the drawer. I did the same thing all those years ago. I cut a pretty piece of paper for the label, rather than use a boring old white label.

8-16 labels

Each label matches the paper in the drawer. Why? Just because I like it.

8-16 finisheddrawers

And there you go!

In the midst of all this activity, I actually did  put minis in each drawer.

Added note: I love the way you can see the Target Loft to the left. See the tiny chair? The loft is currently on the floor until I decide where to put it.

A tech day, plus a little prettifying.

Happy Tuesday.

Scarf Madness

November 28, 2015 at 9:17 am by Claudia

11-28 scarf on table

I’ve been non-stop crocheting. I have some orders to fill and also some new scarves to make for the shop.

I might go mad. Don might come home and see a crazy woman babbling “slip stitch, chain 6, turn, slip stitch into loop…” over and over again, perhaps with a cackling laugh added for dramatic effect.

I know I promised you a new scarf today. In fact, I listed the scarf right before I started this post, and it sold before I could write about it on the blog. Sue, you were fast! I may have to reverse the order in which I do this in the future! I’m going to post a photo of it anyway in case any of you are interested in special ordering one in this colorway.

Obsession Scarf in Stained Glass.

I am happy to crochet special orders for you. I just have to order the yarn and list the scarf under Reserved for (fill in the blank.) Up until now, I’ve been waiting to list the scarf until I’ve finished it, but I think, in the future, that I will list it as I order the yarn and then ship when it’s completed. That way, I know what orders have to be filled and you know I’ve reserved one for you. So if you see one you’d like, let me know. Several people have done that already.

Or, you can be surprised when I list one in a new colorway and grab it then.

Fair warning: I won’t be making these indefinitely.

I got my new iPhone the other day! Huzzah! I had been using an iPhone 4, which is several years old. It was getting harder for me to read things on the screen and I use my phone often – especially when I’m on the road. As I was eligible for an upgrade, I upgraded to an iPhone 6. If I’m ready to upgrade, I never get the latest model, I wait until the newest version comes out and then I buy the now-discounted previous version. It’s a great way to save money.

As you can see, there’s quite a difference in the size. (Those are Scout’s paws to the left. What can I say? It’s morning tunnel time.)

Anyway, I love it. The camera is much, much better. I can see the keyboard when I’m texting. I can see  photos on Instagram without squinting. Everything works more quickly and efficiently.

I just need a new case. So in the meantime, I’m being very careful  with it.

When choosing the wallpaper, there was never any question as to who would make the cut.

My girl.

(I’ll post the biscuit recipe tomorrow, as well as the link to the Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms.)

Happy Saturday.

An Impressionistic View

September 2, 2012 at 8:38 am by Claudia

I love the convenience of my iPhone for a lot of reasons but first and foremost is the camera. Let’s face it, lugging a camera around everywhere you go can be a bit daunting. And heavy, I might add. The phone becomes the equivalent of an instant camera. See something? Snap. Easy.

A few weeks back I was driving into town to fetch my husband, who was coming home for a couple of days from Massachusetts. It was that glorious time of day when it’s getting darkish and the sun is setting. I grabbed the phone (keeping my eyes on the road, I promise) and took some photos. Because the car was moving and I wasn’t looking while I clicked the shutter (again: eyes on the road, hand on the wheel) these photos were the end result.

I sort of love them. At first I thought – oh no, they’re blurry. But then, after closer examination, I realized they were like Impressionist paintings – creating the feeling of the moment without real-life accuracy. The photo of the truck is really growing on me. That gray area on the horizon is actually our mountain ridge. It’s the kind of thing I could never recreate. It could only have come out of that moment, driving at a certain speed, at a very specific time of day.

My iPhone can do a lot things. But who knew? It’s become an impressionist painter.

Thanks to everyone who joined in on the first A Favorite Thing party! I’m so happy you dropped by. More of your favorites are on the docket for next Saturday. I’ll remind you. And today is the last day to leave a comment in order to be entered in my book giveaway. See this post. The random number thingy will pick a winner this evening.

I hope you have a lovely Sunday. It’s humid here and we’re due for some rain over the next few days.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
