Day Two Hundred Ninety

December 28, 2020 at 9:29 am by Claudia

I ordered two jigsaw puzzles for this winter. I’ve been eyeing the puzzles offered by John Derian. Since I can’t get to his shop in NYC, I ordered them online. I was going to order them from his site but the shipping was really pricey, so I caved and ordered through Amazon Prime.

Aren’t they gorgeous? Butterflies and a nineteenth century map of New York City. Derian’s work and aesthetic are exquisite. He’s on IG and I’ve spent hours looking at photos of his NYC apartment and his home on Long Island. I absolutely love the way he decorates. I’d like to be him when I grow up!

I digress. Winter is here, which means more time inside and I need something to do besides reading and working on dollhouses. So…puzzles are back. I’m not sure when I’m going to start one, but soon.

A reader of this blog – Janet – contacted me and asked whether I wanted a piece or two of the Petite Princess furniture she had when she was a child. I already had a couple of them, but I didn’t have the chaise. She generously sent it to me, along with a little birdcage and a plant.

Petite Princess furniture is 3/4 or 1:16 size, so it doesn’t fit in my 1:12 dollhouses, but it does fit in the folk art dollhouse. I’m thinking it will look neat on the upper floor.

Check out this mini snake plant! I just published photos of my parents’ snake plant in bloom and, as always, I got lots of responses from people saying they had no idea that snake plants bloomed. They do. And evidently the maker of this plant knew that because the white flowers are very much like the blooms on my plant. I love it.

Thank you, Janet! I’m honored that you shared these beauties with me.

Yesterday was about washing sheets, vacuuming, dusting, etc. I also cleaned and dusted Don’t mini studio. Because it’s so close to the window it collects a lot of dust. Now that we have new mini-blinds, I’m going to make sure that it isn’t in direct sunlight for too long. I already see a repair I have to do on the floor because the glue has lifted.

That’s about it. I’m still waiting for Don’s other present. Sigh. If it doesn’t come today, I’m going to reorder. (It shipped out of Los Angeles on December 11th and there have been zero updates since then.) His present for me that was also missing arrived on Saturday. He’s holding it until the other present arrives and then we’ll exchange gifts.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Day One Hundred Fifteen

July 6, 2020 at 10:05 am by Claudia

We are in for a hot and humid week. Yesterday was a stay-indoors-out-of-the-heat kind of day and it looks like today will be as well. I went out to water everything, but that was it. Don went on his walk early in the morning and then ventured out to play the guitar on the front porch. He’s writing music again (that makes me very happy.)

What did I do? I spent a lot of time on the jigsaw puzzle, which is a real challenge. I finally made some headway, so I’m feeling more positive about the whole thing. I needed to take a few days off from making stones for the dollhouse. (I need to start calling it by its name, which is Dove Cottage.) The other day, I spent several hours scrolling through artisan dollhouse miniatures on Etsy. If I like something, I put it on my Want List. I’m starting to think about the interior and the windows and wallpaper and beams and trim and wood floors…First up, beams and floors and windows. But all of that costs money, so I have to rein myself in a little and see what I can do on a budget. I welcome the challenge.

I’m thinking of doing another IGTV video – this time of Don’s Mini Studio. I spent some time cleaning and dusting everything in it yesterday. I have to film it when Don is out of the house, so maybe tomorrow morning. Eventually, I’ll do a quick tour of the vintage houses as well.

Today? Probably more work on the puzzle and maybe some work on the dollhouse.

Rest in Peace, Nick Cordero. I didn’t know him, but many of my friends and colleagues did. He was loved and adored by so many people. It’s simply heartbreaking. And then I see video of idiotic people jammed together at various beaches and bars and I want to scream. Because of those selfish and self-absorbed people, people will die. We will be quarantining even longer. I know the majority of Americans are sane and are wearing masks, but it doesn’t take many to spread this disease and screw it up for the rest of us. Quite frankly, there should be a national mandate requiring everyone to wear a mask. And if you don’t wear one, you will be fined. If you’re warned twice, you go to jail. For heaven’s sake, one inept guy trying to conceal a bomb in his shoe has resulted in years and years of taking off our shoes when going through airport security. And no one questions it. This reaction is the result of the idiocy in the White House.

I have to stop. It makes me so angry. Nick Cordero was a healthy, fit Broadway actor in the prime of his life. He went through an unimaginable 3 or 4 months while the virus slowly decimated him. I want to throw all of these entitled fools in jail. Ditto for the people who destroy things in stores because they’ve been asked to wear a mask, all of whom managed to get their little hissy fits recorded on video so that they can get lots of attention.

I’m over it.

But I love you.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Day One Hundred Seven

June 28, 2020 at 10:10 am by Claudia

This puzzle is kicking my butt at the moment.

It will get better.

It rained most of the day yesterday and we are so grateful! More rain is on the docket for this afternoon; thunderstorms most likely. As I write this, Don is preparing to do some work outside, hoping to get some time in before the rain comes. Right now, it’s sunny and a bit humid.

We watched the documentary on James Baldwin, I Am Not Your Negro  last night. It’s available on Netflix. It’s so powerful. It also tells me that American hasn’t progressed much since the time he speaks of most often, the sixties and seventies. And that is heartbreaking. I recommend it highly. It has sparked a lot of conversation around here and will continue to do so.

I’m completely into Where the Crawdad Sings  now. I just need to give it some time. I’ll share more of my thoughts when I’ve finished it – I’m about half-way through.

Since I am now a one video veteran of IGTV, I did one this morning on Hummingbird Cottage. I’ve found that using my iPhone to take a video allows for more detail. (It also shows me everything I would do differently in the future!) Anyway, it’s a bit longer than yesterday’s video, but I hope you like it. Everyone loves the dollhouse posts, so I thought it would be fun to do one now, several years after I completed the house. You can find it on Instagram. If you don’t do IG, go to my sidebar and scroll down to the Instagram widget. You can click on the latest post (the video tour) there.

I’m going to work on the the English Cottage today. I need to get back to work on those darned stones.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
