Paring Down

October 4, 2017 at 9:29 am by Claudia

What did Don and I do before FaceTime? Well, we talked on the phone like everyone else, but since this has been a year of a lot of time spent apart, though late to the game, we have enthusiastically embraced FaceTime. Seeing his face grounds me, as does hearing his voice. He has a great voice. I just finished a session with him before he headed to rehearsal.

On Sunday, the cast flies to New Orleans. They will be teching the show there. Not a bad place to put on a show, right?

Blogging update: Yesterday, after having given it a lot of thought, I deleted the book blog, Just Let Me Finish This Page.

Yes, I did. I hadn’t posted there for 6 months. 6 months! I found I was feeling guilty about it, but not really wanting to maintain the blog. I haven’t been writing as many reviews – just a few lately through TLC Book Tours, and I post those on this blog. There are many books I could review as I get offered advanced copies and I still might review them, but if I do, I’ll do it here.

The fact is, maintaining more than one blog is a lot of work. And I find that I am less and less inclined to do that. Maybe it is related to the fact that I no longer feel any ambition in that arena. (Thank goodness!) I love my blog, and I love posting every day. I am happy with what it now is, and feel no need to get more readers or have it be anything other than my little journal here on the Web. I found myself feeling tremendous pressure to read for the sake of reviewing and then feeling guilty because I wasn’t doing that.

I want to read because I love to read. At my own pace. For myself.

And the blog was linked to this blog on my host and I no longer wanted to worry about spam and hacking attempts or worry that someone would hack into this blog via JLMFTP. It takes too much energy and dealing with that kind of thing on this blog is more than enough.

So, it’s gone. I feel a twinge of sadness, but only a twinge. Since I haven’t posted in so long, you would probably not even notice its absence, but I wanted you to know, nevertheless. And if you do have it on your blog list, you can remove it.

The only reason my other blog, Through a Lens Daily, is still up is because it’s on Blogger and I can just leave it there. I also use it to catch up on other blogs through the blog list on the sidebar. I haven’t posted there in years!

One girl. One blog. And there you have it.

Happy Wednesday.

A ‘No Gourd’ Zone

September 15, 2014 at 8:21 am by Claudia

water drops 2

Last night, the temperatures dropped – it may have been the coldest night in the last few months. Leaves are scattered around the property. Autumn is definitely on its way…but no, it is not here yet. I have no desire to rush headlong into a new season before it actually starts. Yesterday was quite warm during the daylight hours. When Autumn officially arrives in a week or so, I will greet it with a smile. But not until then.

I am not a seasonal decorator. I’m not counting Christmas, of course, but even then, my decorations have been winnowed down in the last few years to a group of very special items that we love. Let’s face it: there is a lot to look at in my cottage. China and pottery is everywhere, favorite prints and paintings are on the walls, there’s always lots of color, books are everywhere. I’ve written about this before in a post called Confession: I Don’t Decorate for the Seasons. And it still holds true.

Why? Well, it could be because we live in a part of the country that has four distinct seasons, each of them glorious. I can look out my window or sit on my porch and see nature’s seasonal decorations. And who could ever top that?

But even when I lived in San Diego, vastly different than the Northeast, I didn’t decorate for the seasons. I might have used some indian corn at some point during my eight years there and we carved a pumpkin or two around Halloween. Those were the days when we had trick or treaters, so we did it for them.

This cottage seems to adapt to the seasons quite well on its own. In the spring and summer, our many windows provide lots of light and give us peeks at trees and flowers and butterflies and birds. In the fall, the light changes and the cottage seems cozier, though I haven’t done anything specific to honor the seasonal change. Lamps are turned on a bit earlier. The throws that are always (in any season) in a basket in the den are used more frequently. But I don’t decorate with them. I see the glorious colors of the changing leaves right outside my windows. In the winter, as the light changes yet again and is reflected off the snow, the cottage becomes even cozier- a haven from winter’s cold and falling snow.

But I don’t do any of that. The cottage itself morphs and adapts and nature’s splendors are right outside our doors – always on view.

I also must confess that I have an aversion to tchotchkes scattered around the house with the words Autumn or Fall or Spring! or whatever on them. Likewise ‘Snow!’ I avoid the seasonal displays and decorations at stores like Michael’s like the plague. Definitely not my thing. I’ve never been able to figure out why I need some words or decorations to tell me what season it is.

Oh, I know. I’m most likely the odd one out here. I understand. I know I often march to a different drummer.

orangey zinnia

Ah…. see? Mother Nature designed this zinnia and its autumnal colors are perfect for this time of year. I take no credit. I’ll soon be seeing these colors in the leaves as they turn. I’d rather look at this ‘decoration’ than anything I could display in my house.

(By the way, Don, this is for you. More zinnia pictures are coming your way.)

Also, the thought of having to seasonally decorate my home makes me want to take a nap. I’m betting, however, that a lot of you love to do just that. And more power to you!

Just don’t stop by expecting to see gourds and pumpkins and indian corn and the word, ‘Autumn,’ everywhere.

You’ll be disappointed.

(New post on Just Let Me Finish This Page: “On Not Wanting a Book to End.” Please stop by.

Happy Monday.

The Abandoned Toys

August 30, 2014 at 8:59 am by Claudia

old toys

Do you see that plastic container full of dog toys?

Scout hasn’t played with them for a few years. Riley stopped playing with them even before that.

But there they sit. I can’t bring myself to get rid of them. They certainly don’t make for an attractive display. They are directly in front of me as I sit in my blogging chair and there’s no denying their presence. Every once in a while, I contemplate getting rid of them. Or hiding them away somewhere in the house.

Can’t do it.

I suppose it must be what parents feel when they contemplate favorite toys that their children have outgrown. We all know my dogs are my children, so I guess I’m just a typical parent.

I think they’ll stay there for a bit longer.

golden zinnia

I pulled a lot of weeds yesterday. A lot. The gardens are looking a bit cleaner, thank goodness. I pruned a few bushes. It felt good to be working in the garden after my stint indoors.

This weekend? I’m taking it easy. I’m awaiting the newer version of the Hamlet script which should be arriving in the mail today or Tuesday, so work on that is temporarily on hold.

But I have a lot of reading to do for future book reviews and for me. I have some NY Times crossword puzzles that I haven’t touched yet. I have to check up on my dad. I have some old movies to watch with my husband. Maybe a bit of lawn mowing.

mg buds new and old

And some flowers to photograph.

What are your plans for this three-day weekend?

(Last day to enter the giveaway for a copy of The Long Way Home by Louise Penny. If you’re interested, stop by Just Let Me Finish This Page. I pick a winner this evening.)

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
