A World Gone Mad

July 15, 2016 at 9:10 am by Claudia

7-15 coneflowers

Some days I’m able to write as if there wasn’t an atrocity happening somewhere in the world. I’m able to put pretty pictures in this space and rattle on about my life. That’s not a bad thing.

But it’s not a truly good thing, either. Because every day we hear of some bombing, of some attack, of horrific loss of life.  Some of it terrorist sponsored, some of it perpetrated by an angry and screwed up lone wolf – a terrorist wannabe  – all  of it fueled by hate. Attacks occur all over the world: in Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Syria, Nigeria…

And in France. Maybe I have to acknowledge this one because we happened to turn on the television (which is silent during the day) just after the first news of the unspeakable attack in Nice broke. And we sat there and watched, horrified and sickened, saying what we have been saying daily: “Every day. It seems to be happening every day.”

A world gone mad.

This is a day where I simply can’t write as if it’s a normal day. This is a day where I find myself at a loss.

And that’s all I can say, except to express my heartfelt sympathies to all those who have lost loved ones in this carnage. And to all those who have lost loved ones to all the carnage that goes on in the world and in this country every day, endlessly. Over and over and over again.

A Story

June 9, 2016 at 9:20 am by Claudia

6-9 hostasanddaylilies

Yesterday was unexpectedly amazing.

So, I have a little story to tell.

You remember my post about health insurance? That Don is now getting Medicare (as of June 1) and that our health insurance, purchased through the Affordable Care Act, had to be changed? The end result was that I had to change to an individual policy, which ended up being even more expensive than what we were paying for a ‘family’ policy – about $550/month just for me. Add to that the smaller amount that Don has to pay for Medicare Part B and we’re talking well over $600/month for healthcare.

Now I know many of you are faced with this challenge and some of you pay even more than this. I can only speak to our individual situation, which is that of freelancers who are basically on a fixed and very limited income and who have a hefty mortgage payment every month. When we move into a period like the present one, when neither of us has freelance work, our income is stretched to its limits.

So. On Tuesday I went to get the mail late in the day and saw an envelope from the Screen Actors Guild. (Don is a longtime member of 3 unions.) It was from their Health Care Plan with the words “Premium Notice.”  I was puzzled; we don’t have health care through the union, though we’ve had it in the past, because members have to earn a certain amount of money per year to qualify. Don wasn’t home from NYC yet, so I held onto it until he came in the door.

He opened it, and sure enough there was a bill for June, and then a list of upcoming quarterly payments. What? We hadn’t enrolled, could this have been sent to Don by mistake? Was it meant for some other union member? And Don was on Medicare, so surely he wasn’t qualified for this insurance anyway. We had a lot of questions.

We had to wait to call them until yesterday.

It turns out – and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing from Don’s end of the conversation – that Don has qualified for a special Senior level of health insurance through SAG and will be qualified for it for the rest of his life.

And so will I.

I got on the other line and every question we asked was answered in the affirmative. Can Don be on Medicare at the same time? Yes. Whatever Medicare doesn’t cover, we will. Will we have to pay a larger amount in order to have my wife on the policy? No. Since you were both covered in the past, we’ve already factored your wife in and the monthly payment of $120 is for both of you.

(At this point tears were rolling down my face.)

You have Blue Cross. (The deductible is one-tenth  of what I was paying on my individual policy.) You have discounted prescriptions. You have dental coverage. You have vision coverage. You have an unbelievably low out-of-pocket amount – around $1000.

From me: And will this continue into next year? Yes. You mean I won’t have to sign up for ACA in January? No, you won’t have to do that.

You mean we only have to pay $120.00 a month and that’s it? Yes.

Still crying from the enormous sense of relief I was experiencing, I thanked her over and over again and told her this was the answer to a prayer.

Don and I were in different rooms, each of us on the landline. When the call finished, we ran to each other and hugged, stunned and amazed by this gift that had come out of nowhere.

We’d never received a notice that this was going to happen. We just received the bill. My only quibble – and it’s a very, very small one – is that now I have to cancel my insurance and do my best to get a refund of part of my payment since I’ve only been covered for a total of 8 days. I’ve already cancelled it and tomorrow I’ll call to discuss the refund. But heck, I’m happy to jump through a couple of hoops – I’m thrilled.

Isn’t this wonderful?  Don didn’t know such a policy existed. It was just given to us. We didn’t have to do anything to qualify – it has something to do with ‘pension points,’ whatever that means. We don’t care what it means, we’re just so grateful that Don’s pension points are at a level that qualifies for this.

We are so thankful. An answer to a prayer that I didn’t even know I’d made.

We celebrated by buying some top soil for the memorial garden. That’s it. We’re being very, very frugal at the moment! We were so happy we didn’t even mind walking through the garden center in the rain! We didn’t have an umbrella and didn’t care.

It was such an emotional high that we sort of collapsed later in the day.

Isn’t that a great story?

Happy Thursday.

Alarms, Roses and a Beautiful Moth

June 5, 2016 at 10:14 am by Claudia

Curses! Foiled again.

As we were drifting off to sleep last night, one of our smoke detectors went off. But it was just a quick beep-beep. Don got up and disconnected the one he thought was making the sound. (We’ve had trouble before with moths and bugs flying in the detector and setting it off.)

We went back to bed, now wide awake. About ten minutes later, another beep-beep, beep-beep. So Don got up, as did I, and we took the cover off the detector that is right outside our bedroom door. We couldn’t smell any smoke. None of the detectors downstairs were going off.

Back to bed. Ten minutes later…you guessed it. So we got up and went to the detector that is over the stairs. It had to be this one. (There are three detectors rather close together. One is wired into our security system, the other two aren’t.) This one was wired into the system. Cover off. This time we went downstairs and checked everything out. Nothing. We got back into bed. Neither of us could sleep. I got up and checked out the office, just to make sure. Nothing. No more beeps. But sleep was a long time coming.

You understand why I say I really don’t feel like driving 2½ hours to the Miniature Show. In stormy weather, no less.

Someday, I guess. Someday I’ll get to one.

Late yesterday afternoon, I  saw something on the kitchen screen.

I grabbed my camera, intercepted Don as he arrived home, and went to investigate.

6-5 lunamoth1

Oh my heavens! We gasped when we saw this moth. The wings look like leaves. It has a swallowtail. The top edge of the wings looks like a twig. And the antennae look like feathers.

6-5 lunamoth2

There’s a ruffled edge on the wings as well as ‘eyes.’ I ran inside to look it up and discovered it is a Luna Moth. I’ve heard of them, but sightings are rare, as they only fly at night. They live for one week, in which they mate, lay their eggs on the underside of a Black Walnut leaf, and die. We have several Black Walnut trees on the property.

We were entranced by this beautiful being. I’ve never seen one in person, only in photos.

6-5 lunamoth3

It’s one of the largest moths in North America.

Seeing it there felt like a blessing, an amazing sight that was witnessed by only Don and me. Sure enough, as soon as it was dark, it was gone.

Aren’t we lucky?

My Julia Child roses are blooming. I originally chose the bush because the flowers were yellow. Over the course of the years, they’ve turned dark red. That happens sometimes with roses that are grafted onto another bush. I miss the yellow, but I’ll take the red, especially since it didn’t bloom last summer after the harsh winter we had. I thought it was gone, remember? I was even considering digging it out and removing it. But it surprised me this year.

6-5 rose

Some of the leaves have been chomped on by some creature or other. But I won’t use pesticides, so that’s the way it’s going to be.

Pretty!

So we’ll try to figure out the mystery of the smoke detector today. Perhaps the battery needs replacing.

I have a book review scheduled for tomorrow. It’s for Keep You Close, an incredibly well-written mystery with a twist in the plot that will shock you. I’ll be giving away a copy, so be sure to stop by.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
