The Kitchen, Part Two – Pottery & Knick Knacks

November 17, 2009 at 11:20 am by Claudia

I promised to show you some of the things I have scattered around the kitchen. I’ll try to limit my narration.Everything has been captured in its actual place in the kitchen and sometimes that makes for shadows, especially on top of the cabinets!

I have lots of pottery throughout the house – in the kitchen you’ll see McCoy, of course, some of the Fiesta that I kept when I sold my collection, transferware, flowery dishes, bakelite-handled utensils; things that make me smile. In no particular order, here we go!

The crazy bunny rabbit cookie jar we found in a little local shop. I think it is from England originally…I couldn’t resist. My favorite apple pie ever, and I am a pie lover, is from The Julian Pie Company in Julian, California. We used to get them frequently when we lived in San Diego. A few years ago, my husband had one FedExed to our home here in the East for my birthday. We saved the box. Oh, and my birthday is this Saturday, the 21st! I don’t know if there is Julian Pie on the menu, but husband has informed me that he has reservations at some special place!

I so hope you enjoyed this little tour.

Feathered Friends Party

August 11, 2009 at 8:17 pm by Claudia

I’m joining the Feathered Friends Party today. Gina at The Shabby Chic Cottage is the lovely hostess – please stop by her blog to see who’s participating! I took a little trip around the cottage to snap pictures of all things bird-related. Let’s see….how about some real bird nests?

This little nest is one I blogged about – we found it on the backside of our Christmas wreath (I was away – my husband left it up a tad too long.) The egg is from Michael’s.
This tiny little nest was found in one of the hanging plants on our porch – it was abandoned at that point – so I brought it inside and put it under my cloche. I love nests – they are little miracles.

Next to the cloche is my little Bakelite bird napkin ring.

Birds in paintings: the top one is by Christie Repasy, the middle is a Stellar Jay painted on tile that we bought in Flagstaff, the bottom is in a large flower painting hanging in the den.
My vintage birdcage – I love this sweet cage made by Hendryx. Inside is a bird made by my friend Joy…

Finally, I collect McCoy Pottery – I’m totally crazy about it! Several pieces have birds in them, or like the photo above, are birds.

Thanks so much for visiting! I am so looking forward to visiting everyone taking part in the party!

Fluffing

July 14, 2009 at 10:33 am by Claudia

I’ve placed my wrought iron thingy on my table. (I’m not sure what to call it.) I bought it at the Barn Sale thinking I was driving home and would be able to throw it in the rental car. Then I changed my mind and it had to be packed by the shipping company. I always envisioned it on this table and I think I like it there. My husband likes it, too – he thinks it should stay as is, nothing added to it, because he likes its see-through sculptural quality. Did that make sense? I tend to agree with him. That is not to say I might not add one or two pretty things for special occasions….

The piano top had become too crowded, so everything was taken off. I decided the McCoy Pottery birds should all be together in one place. They are singing, after all, so shouldn’t they be on the piano? They seem very happy in their new home. You can see Christie’s painting of birds on the wall to the left and the corner of her rose painting to the right.

I can’t remember if I ever told you about the piano. It was my grandmother’s. My mother learned to play on it, as did my siblings and I. I was the one who took lessons the longest and I was a singer and musician for a great portion of my life, so I inherited it. When I went to graduate school and for many years after, I lived in tiny apartments. No room for a piano. It lived at my parents’ house. When they decided to move, my aunt held onto it for me. She played piano by ear and loved playing. I was happy it was with her. (I miss her so.) When Don and I found a house to rent in San Diego, I was finally able to have it shipped to me. The original ivory keys had cracked and were worn, so I had them replaced – no more ivory, it is illegal, thank goodness. It has traveled from Michigan to San Diego and then to New York. So many loved ones’ hands have touched this keyboard and made music on it. I will never give it up; it is precious beyond measure.

Have a great day!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
