Curtains! (Not) Foiled Again.

December 7, 2014 at 9:29 am by Claudia

Saturday was rainy, a sort of dismal day. So we stayed in and I worked on the dollhouse. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been trying – and failing – to add a circular shower curtain rod to the bathroom, resulting in lots of frustration and cursing. I found some florist wire at Michael’s the other day that was thicker than what I had been previously using in my futile attempts.

I managed to pull it off yesterday. It’s not perfect. But it will do for now.

I also made a shower curtain out of linen. It’s a little heavy, so I might change it out in the future. But for now, I’m rather pleased with my sincere, if amateurish, stab at getting it done.

This is a darkish photo and I’ll try to get something better later on today. These narrow rooms are always hard to capture – the light needs to be just right.

I actually tried to make little shower curtain rings out of some wire I had in my ‘making jewelry’ stash. They were pretty gosh darned cute, but in the end, I scrapped them and, instead, sewed the curtain to the rod.

Whenever I manage to pull something like this off, I shout out to Don and make him drop whatever he’s doing to come see it. He is always appropriately impressed and gives me lots of “I’m proud of you” pats on the back. Thank you, Don, for being almost as excited about this little hobby of mine as I am.

Also found in Michael’s the other day:

This map of the British Isles. Caroline is an Anglophile (as am I) and she displays this lovely vintage map above her work space.

Today, we are going to give Scout a bath in the tub. One of us will have to hold her very securely while the other bathes her. We don’t want her to feel she has to do all the work of supporting herself. She’d get very tired, very quickly. So we’ll do it for her. The old girl needs a bath desperately and today is the day. Wish us all luck!

Tomorrow is the day we’ll get our Christmas tree. It’s been moved up in our schedule because we’re due for some sort of snow event on Tuesday. The jury is still out on how much snow we’ll be hit with. Don, get ready to fire up the snowblower!

Happy Sunday.

Who, What, Where: Dollhouse Bathroom

December 6, 2014 at 9:46 am by Claudia

Today, I’m returning to the Who, What, Where Series. Normally, I’d be highlighting the bedroom, because it’s next in the sequence. But I’m waiting on a new element, so I’m going to pop over to the bathroom instead.

For the life of me, I couldn’t get an acceptable full-on shot of the bathroom, so we’ll skip that and go right to the elements of the room.

Wallpaper: Itsy Bitsy Mini; Beadboard, moldings & chair rail: miniatures.com; Tile floor: found in a craft store.

Pie Safe: I asked Marsha to purchase one for me at a miniature show out in California, I’m afraid I don’t know who the maker is; Towels: made by me from baby washcloths; Glass container with shells: a gift from Marsha; Wicker basket: a gift that was handmade by Casey; Flowers: from my stash; Red wooden container: part of a gift package from Maryanne. It was unfinished wood and I painted it red; Toilet: part of a bag of minis given to me by Heidi. I originally didn’t want to use it, but I couldn’t find anything better, so I painted it and there it is.

Rug: from A LavenderDilly, an Etsy Shop; Sink/Cabinet: from miniatures.com. I painted it red; Faucets & Taps: from miniatures.com; Glass soap dish: a gift from Jayne; Hand Towel: a gift from Norma; Mirror: part of a compact that I took apart. Casey advised me to paint the edge black; Flip Flops: a gift from Jill; Chair: made by me from a pattern in Léa’s book.

Tub: from a bag of things from Heidi. I painted it and the paint crackled. I ended up liking it; Shutters: from my stash, painted by me; Sansiveria plant in pot: a gift from Jayne.

I have plans for a few more additions; a shower curtain rod and shower curtain (wish me luck!) a vanity, and towel racks. It’s a work in progress.

Happy Saturday.

The Story Behind the Print & Aussie Additions

December 3, 2014 at 8:46 am by Claudia

When I posted about the new bookshelves, I mentioned the print that is on the wall and how much we love it. Trudy, a faithful reader, asked me if I’d told the picture’s story. Well, I have, but it was a while ago, so I’ll share it with you again.

There it is.

Several years ago, I was at an auction with my friend Heidi. This particular auction took place once a month and it inevitably went on to the wee hours because the man who ran the auction was the slowest auctioneer I’ve ever seen. I spotted this print as it leaned against a wall on the far side of the room. I fell in love with the flowers (love flower paintings) but I really fell in love with the frame. The scalloped edges of the wooden frame were so charming and, to me, cottage-like.

There’s a thin line of green paint along the edge. (I am crazy for this frame.)

Anyway, I waited and waited for this framed beauty to come up for auction. Ten o’clock. Eleven o’clock. Midnight. Nothing. And then the auctioneer decided to call it a night.

Oh no.

Several of us shouted out about various items – what about this? what about that?

It was very late and everyone was very tired. When I mentioned the print, he said, “Is anyone else interested in it?” No one was.

I got it for $15.

A steal. The piece is large and very heavy and that frame is worth much, much more than $15. I briefly considered hanging it over the piano, but it looked much better in the den. So there it stays. When designing the placement of the bookshelves, it was always a given that the print would remain where it was. The stain on the frame also matches the stain on the little shelf in the den that holds some of my egg cups. Meant to be.

A little package from Australia arrived in the mail yesterday. I ordered four things for the dollhouse from my favorite Etsy seller Carrie Lavender. It’s funny, but while you’re waiting for a package of minis to arrive, you keep thinking of the items and where you’ll put them and they almost become real-sized in your imagination. Then the package actually arrives and it’s tiny. And the items are tiny. And you remember – oh yeah, this is for my dollhouse!

The past couple of days have been dark and dreary, so photos are tricky.

Aussie-additions 5

This lovely Aubusson pillow is a new addition to the living room. It’s in a shade of coral that is picked up in the rug.

Aussie-additions 1

Two editions of Jane Austen.

Aussie-additions 6

New French-inspired house numbers.

And, though I love everything, my favorite:

Aussie-additions 2

This “vintage” French shoe store sign. I’ve wanted it for about a year now and I finally got around to ordering it. Don’s first response? “I want one for our house!” (We love signs here at MHC. So, apparently, does Caroline.)

Thank you, Carrie!

I’ll be reviewing The Burning Room by Michael Connelly on Just Let Me Finish This Page today. Stop by!

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
