Crafting Minis for a Swap. Yes, I Did!

May 9, 2014 at 7:28 am by Claudia

I’ve been awake since 4:45 am. I’m not real happy about that. Lack of sleep, the inability to concentrate or remember things, a short temper, spontaneous tears; all are, I’m sure, part of the grieving process. Don has to fill in the blanks for me when I say something like, “You know….that series with Kevin Spacey….the one we like…. you know…”

“House of Cards?”

Frustrated. “Yes. Why can’t I remember that?”

And so it goes.

But, hey, it’s 6:34 am and I’m already writing my post for the day while Scout snoozes in the ‘Tunnel.’ That can’t be all bad.

Let’s talk about what I did yesterday for seven hours straight, in my painting clothes, hair unwashed. Because once I get going on something I am like a dog with a bone, I push myself beyond the point at which I should stop.

The talented Amy Powers, who blogs at Inspire Co., created Club Little House (for all of us who love miniatures) several years ago and occasionally, she conducts a swap. The last one I can remember was when I was first getting into my dollhouse and I didn’t feel remotely qualified to take part. I still don’t.

But when Debby told me that Amy had a new swap going on, I bit the bullet and signed up. Now, I am really not a miniaturist. I tweak, I play, I build a few things, but I’m very much a beginner. In this swap, we are to come up with some miniature that we can make 12 of. We send our creations to Amy and she puts everything together and soon we are opening a box with 12 different miniatures created by members of the swap. Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

I racked my brain trying to come up with something. When I finally did, I had to order some supplies that took a while to get here because they were sent from England, though I somehow didn’t get that fact because this website has an American version as well, so I thought everything was being shipped here. I was a little panicked about whether my supplies would arrive in time. But they did. Everything arrived on Wednesday.

My first idea was to make a small hanging/coat/hook/rack. The mini hooks were brass, so the first thing I did was spray paint them white.

Then I used some of the wood trim I had on hand and cut several pieces 2¼” long – since the scale is 1:12, that means that one mini inch equals one foot in the real world. So this would be 2¼’ long in reality.

fripaintedwood

I stained and painted each piece of wood. Then I sanded the painted pieces down in order to give them a more rustic look.

Then I glued the hooks on.

frif12hangers

Twelve hanging hook/coat/racks. (I never know what to call them.)

I made a prototype for myself and here is what it looks like in the dollhouse:

frihangersondhwall

I think I’ll make one to hang towels on in the bathroom.

The other mini that I made was inspired by the wooden crate I bought from a seller on Etsy. He did such a nice job with it. The same miniature site that had the hooks in stock also had mini crates, so I ordered them as well. I searched the internet for free printable miniature images and finally settled on a label that I really liked. I finally figured out how to print several of the same image on one page (I know. It’s probably perfectly obvious to you. But not to me.) I cut out each of the labels with the aid of a metal ruler and an Exacto knife.

Here’s the prototype I made:

friprototypecrate

Because French labels are pretty. They just are. There is a label on the front and the back.

Each crate was first painted with a base coat of white.

Then they were painted in aqua and the corners were sanded to age them a bit. Next, I glued the labels on to each crate.

And voilà!

frifinishedcrates

Nothing complex or intricate; nevertheless, it took me a long time to add each element, to paint, layer, sand and glue .

I’m pretty happy with these and I’ll wrap them up and send them off to Amy on Monday. Can’t wait to see what other swap participants have created!

Happy Friday.

The Lure of the Teeny-Tiny

May 3, 2014 at 8:41 am by Claudia

A few weeks ago, I was leaving a local antique shop and I spied a little dish full of tiny animals at the check-out counter. Most of them were vintage and not in a style I cared for. But one little figurine stood out – I think it had been included in the dish by mistake. I grabbed it. For $1.00.

It was this little guy. You can see how tiny he is in relation to my egg cups.

Another view.

Ready for his close-up.

He is on the same little set of shelves as my mini wooden ducks.

miniducks

Why are we so drawn to miniatures? In the last several years I have started collecting tiny putz sheep, miniature pottery, and all things small and dollhouse-y. If I see something tiny, yet wonderfully detailed, I’m drawn to it like a moth to a flame. Tiny little sheep? Yes. Adorable tiny wooden ducks? Of course! Miniature versions of the big-sized pottery I already collect? I cannot resist.

I don’t even have to say anything about the dollhouse. And miniature furniture, plates, rugs, lamps, and books. That particular attraction is obvious to anyone who reads this blog.

I wasn’t always drawn to these delightful tiny things. They cast their spell on me later in life. But I am well and truly hooked.

Do you collect anything tiny?

Can you put into words just why you are drawn to miniatures?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the world of teeny-tiny, wee, little, and mini.

Happy Saturday.

A Dollhouse Day

January 18, 2014 at 9:13 am by Claudia

I know this will be shocking and not all in tune with the rest of the blogging world, but here goes. I’m not a fan of Cath Kidston’s designs. Never have been. There’s something about her version of flowery prints that I just don’t like. And you know I like flowery things. They’re all over my house.

I do, however, love the designs of GreenGate, a company based in Denmark. I could easily go crazy there, buying china and tea towels and mugs and aprons and all things home. I love the way GreenGate uses color and flowers. Their design work is gorgeous. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) there’s no way to buy their products here in the States. So my house has nothing from GreenGate inside its walls.

Oh wait, my dollhouse is another story:

greengateplate

This little plate was made by Carrie Lavender. It’s one of my favorite GreenGate designs. It was inadvertently left off my order, so Carrie sent it to me separately and here it is. Just to prove to you that it is indeed a miniature plate, I give you this.

Adorable. Beautiful. I’m in love.

Yesterday, taking advantage of Don’s absence while he worked in the city, I cleaned the bathroom like a crazy woman. I straightened up the topsy-turvy areas of the house as best I could. And I did a little work on the dollhouse. Girding my loins, I thought I might try a little project from Léa Frisoni’s book on Miniatures (the one that Don got me for Christmas.) I had to translate all the directions via Google Translate but fortunately, I did that a few week ago, so I was ready to go. It looked fairly simple; deceptively simple, I might add. But I figured, what the heck? After a couple of hours I came up with a chair.

leachair

This is a bit of a variation on Léa’s design. I couldn’t find the same kind of florist wire, so I substituted something else. It’s ever so slightly wonky, but it works.  I was thinking it might be a nice addition to the bathroom.

leachairinbathroom

What do you think? A little vintage chair to sit on for a second or two, or a place to toss a towel or a robe? I am rather proud of my first foray into mini-making. I want to make another one someday when I can find the kind of florist wire Léa recommends. But right now? I’m liking this sweet little vintagey-looking chair.

Then I moved on to the craft room/studio/office. I’ve had this idea for a while. I wanted a counter-like desk on the the planked wall, long and narrow, where the owner could set up her sewing machine or write a letter or work on her computer. It’s meant to function as a space saver, as the owner also has a work table for larger projects.

I found a nice piece of wood at the hobby shop, cut it to the length I wanted and then decided to stain it. I like the contrast of the stained wood with the white planked wall. The legs are left over spindles from the stair railings that I cut down. (I’m realizing that my mini copy of To Kill a Mockingbird is a little off scale, a little on the large side. I’m going to think of it as a special edition – a coffee table size edition of my favorite novel.)

That’s the sewing machine Julie sent to me – all the way from Canada. It looks like my Featherweight.

All in all, a productive day. I had another call from QVC. They are doing their best to check in with me every day. The bed we’re sleeping on is from the days when I really liked a firm mattress. My bones no longer prefer that level of firmness and I’m very sore and creaky upon waking. The bed is in relatively good shape because I only had it for a year or so before Don and I moved in together and bought a bigger bed. It hasn’t been used all that much. However, it’s a full size bed that was meant for single girl Claudia. Not Claudia and Don twenty years later…. Ah well.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
