On This Sunday

Good morning and happy Easter. So far, there’s not any sun in evidence, but I’m hoping that will change. Yesterday was sunny and a bit warmer and boy, did that feel good. Is it possible, just possible, that spring might be coming?

No Easter candy to be found here. When Don and I first met, I did attempt to put some baskets together, but he didn’t really care and we don’t have kids and the last thing I need are more sweets for my already over-active sweet tooth, so we didn’t do that again. And, despite my egg cup collection, no eggs have been dyed or colored or even hard boiled.

We never do a big dinner either. Just as well, as this is the day that Don leaves for Prague. A car is coming to take him to the airport in Newark, NJ around 4:30 pm. One of the perks of being part of a film: a car comes for you and your wife doesn’t have to drive you all the way to Newark. I’ve done that before and it’s a long haul. He’ll fly all night, connecting in Zurich. I’m so excited for him. He’s a bit nervous right now with all the traveling ahead, the overnight flight, will he have a seat that will accomodate his over 6 foot 4 inch frame, all the waiting and the jet lag. Things will be better once he gets there, I imagine. Both of us have been to Europe, but it has been many years since either of us has been there. Traveling overseas is not an everyday thing for us.

Speaking of Don, I added a widget to the sidebar that will lead you to some of his music on the ReverbNation site. I know I mentioned that he recorded about 14 of his favorite songs while he was in San Diego. His friend is working on them in his recording studio, mixing and mastering them. When Don receives an edited version, he adds it to his site. So far, I think there are about 6 songs available for your listening pleasure. Interestingly, he recorded all of them right after he had the flu and he’s never sounded better!

We watched a great screwball comedy last night, The Lady Eve with Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. Have I mentioned before what a huge Barbara Stanwyck fan I am? And how much I love those period movies with all the great character actors? Heaven. Today another of my favorites, Easter Parade, is on TCM. If I am a huge Barbara Stanwyck fan, I am a mega fan of Fred Astaire. I have just about every book written about him. Of course I already own a copy of Easter Parade, but somehow it’s more exciting when it happens to be on television. I don’t know why.

Opening day, Red Sox/Yankees tomorrow! Baseball is back and I’m a happy girl.

Have a wonderful day, eat lots of candy, celebrate.

Some Thoughts on a Sunny, but Cold, Sunday Morning

January 27, 2013 at 10:13 am by Claudia

The deep freeze continues. Some relief is in store tomorrow, though we’re going to get the dreaded ‘wintry mix.’ And on Wednesday? Highs in the fifties. Go figure. The temperature changes from day to day this winter have been mind-boggling. But the sun is out and that makes everything better.

• Yesterday I received a couple of packages in the mail. One was from my talented sister, Meredith. She has been experimenting with needle felting. Let’s see what that cutie sent to me:

feltedheart

This adorable felted heart pin. Isn’t it sweet? Our Etsy shop just might have a variation on this heart very soon. Just giving you a heads up.

feltedbird

Oh. my. goodness. I am in love with this beautiful bird, complete with a nest on a branch. As you know, I love birds. I love red. This is perfect.

feltedbird2

Be still my heart. Meredith will most likely be embarrassed by my posting these photos, but I’m so proud of her creativity. These are her first forays into needle felting and they are fabulous. Imagine all the wonderful creations that are in store.

Thank you, sweet sister of mine.

lincoln

• The Screen Actors Guild sent us an Awards Screener copy of Lincoln and I watched it last night. I really loved it. There’s so much important history in this story. Everyone in our current Congress should watch it. They could learn a thing or two. Or three. Lincoln has always been fascinating to me and now I want to read Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book on which the movie is based.

The cast is stellar. (There are at least 3 actors in major roles that I have worked with and coached. That makes me smile.)

Daniel Day-Lewis is simply incredible. He is a brilliant actor on any old day of the week, but this performance is pitch perfect and worthy of an Oscar. Sally Field is heartbreaking and wonderful as the First Lady.

• I finished Gone Girl. I wasn’t all that crazy about it. Gillian Flynn is a brilliant writer. No bones about it. She writes beautifully and her intricate plot, which weaves together a complicated story and lays a trail of tantalizing clues that reveal more and more about the characters, is first-rate. That being said, my problem was that I didn’t much like the two major characters. There was nothing that made me root for one or the other or ultimately care what happened to them. Neither of them had much in the way of redeeming character traits, so I was left feeling empty and unsatisfied. It’s the kind of book, for me, that dazzles me with the sheer skill of the writing, but leaves me feeling like I would if I wanted a full dinner but got an elaborate dessert instead. I love dessert, don’t get me wrong. But it doesn’t fill me up.

I’m sure I am in the minority here. This is a hugely popular book and I know it. And I’ll never give plot points away. Just my ‘unofficial’ review.

• Just a word about my weekly A Favorite Thing party and why I love it. Two words: cozy and manageable. I feel strongly that it is my duty to visit and comment on every post. And I do. I’m the hostess, after all, and it’s the polite thing to do. I welcome all new participants, of course, but this party isn’t about numbers. It’s about sharing stories with each other. I know that other linky parties are much bigger. But, since my aim is to share in your posts and comment on each one, this cozy little get-together is just perfect. However, if the numbers did go up from, say 40 or 50 to 80, I would still visit each and every one of you. If it ever got to the point where I couldn’t visit you, I’d have to reconsider the whole thing.

Okay. I just may clean out our closet today. You have no idea what a mess it is. Then I will reward myself with some work on my dollhouse. Clean and sort first. Play later.

Happy Sunday.

Friday Free Associating

Some seemingly random thoughts on a Friday morning:

1. I’m not feeling all that well this morning. Not sure what’s going on, but I feel a bit off. I’m going to turn it all around with positive thoughts.

2. Don’s show opened last night. Here he is as Alfred Doolittle in Pygmalion:

He’s perfect for this role. The audiences love him. If you’re in the San Diego area, go see him! Here’s a link to the write-up in Playbill and to the Old Globe’s website. Robert Sean Leonard is playing Henry Higgins.

3. I’ve watched both Argo and Silver Linings Playbook and really liked them both. Argo is incredible – I was on the edge of my seat. Ben Affleck’s direction is excellent and the acting is wonderful. Silver Linings Playbook is delightful: quirky, funny and heart-warming. I was thinking about it this morning when I woke up – that’s always a good sign. I’m not usually a big Bradley Cooper fan, but he is absolutely terrific in this movie. Yesterday, Les Miserables arrived in the mail! I have to say, this is sort of fun – a definite perk of my husband’s long membership in the Screen Actors Guild.

4. My dissatisfaction with Barnes & Noble continues. I dropped in there the other day to look for a copy of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, a hugely popular, bestselling mystery/thriller. Not one copy anywhere in the store. When I say this is a bestseller, I mean it is currently a bestseller. Not in the past, now. I must have circled that store 5 times thinking I might have missed the display. Oh, let me correct that. I circled the small section of the store that is devoted to actual books. Nope. Nothing. She has written other books. I looked for them. Nothing.

I found it at Target.

What can I say?

5. My good friend, James Latus, is a well-known Stage Manager both on and off Broadway. I’ve been fortunate to work with him on two different occasions. Besides being the nicest guy in the world, he is an incredible baker (and cook) who regularly lavishes his cast and crew with scrumptious treats. He’s just started a new blog, The Backstage Baker, and there are already some great recipes there. Stop by and visit!

Okay. That’s all for now. I’ll be back at 8:00 EST for A Favorite Thing.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
