When A Movie is So Bad that it’s Good

July 25, 2014 at 7:50 am by Claudia

It’s actually coolish this morning.

I turned off the air conditioner. I may have to turn it back on again later, but it’s so nice to have quiet and birdsong, instead of the constant whir of the A/C.

I ran some errands yesterday. I know, big deal. But it was the first day I felt good enough to venture out for longer than a few minutes here and there. (More about the trip on Just Let Me Finish This Page.) The trip tired me out but I revived enough to do some weed whacking later on in the afternoon, while Don did a little mowing. Baby steps.

friday - lantana&birdbath

There was nothing worth watching on television last night, so we watched TCM On Demand. Don’s choice? A movie called Tentacles, made in the seventies and so dreadfully bad that it was good. You know what I mean. Sometimes there is a movie that is so bad that it makes for the perfect viewing experience. (As long as you’re not spending any money.) Clearly trying to build on the success of Jaws, the plot revolved around a giant octopus who was attacking and killing people in a coastal beach town. The producers were Italian and parts of the film were obviously dubbed. I don’t know how they got them, but the cast included Shelley Winters, John Huston, and Henry Fonda. Henry had sort of a cameo role, most of his scenes took place on a terrace and were, I’m sure, filmed in one day. He was part of a subplot that involved the work his company was doing on an underwater tunnel and the frequent use of high frequencies of sound that presumably created this monster octopus. Shelley played John Huston’s sister. Huston was a reporter and Shelley, a bit long in the tooth at this point in her career, as was Huston, was the mother of a little boy of about 10 or 12. What?? The whole thing was cheaply done, with bad special effects and closeups of a regular old octopus that were supposed to be terrifying. The plot got more absurd as the film went on, eventually involving some Shamu-type killer whales from a place not unlike Sea World that had been trained by the guy (played by Bo Hopkins) who was hunting the octopus (and who, by the way, had lost his wife, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and friend to the killer octopus, simply because they went out on a boat and used their radio to contact the Coast Guard – those sound frequencies again.) Bless them, those killer whales took on the octopus and killed him in a long scene that was so cheesy and blurry that I was unsure what I was seeing.

All this with a cheap sounding musical score created on a synthesizer.

I can’t make these things up.

friday - spirea

It’s Friday. We have no plans for the weekend but Don does have a gig on Sunday. I have to catch up on my reading. I have books to read and review and I didn’t much feel like reading when I was sick.

Happy Friday.

Sigh of Relief

July 19, 2014 at 8:20 am by Claudia

The last three days? Insane.

The attack started on Wednesday and continued through yesterday. The techs at my host assured me that kind of attack isn’t personal – it’s done by a bot with some sort of script and they just keep at it. And at it. Anyone with a blog has been on the receiving end of a hacking attempt – they might not know it’s going on, but it is. Usually, they are a few hours long. But this one was a whole new thing. By Thursday, I decided to add another level of security, even though I really didn’t want to spend the money.

My blogs mean a lot to me and feeling peace of mind about any future attacks makes the expense worth it. Unfortunately, these DDoS  attacks and Brute Force attacks are becoming more and more common. You’d think these idiots could find something better to do with their time.

When I was on Blogger, my blog was hacked four times. That’s why I moved to WordPress. On Blogger, getting any tech help is next to impossible and after the first hacking attempt, no one answered my questions. Not one person. I felt helpless. And as I scrolled through the Blogger Help Forums, I saw lots and lots of unanswered pleas for help. Some people had lost their blogs, some were hacked, sometimes Blogger just deleted a blog for some reason or another. Very disheartening. At least with WordPress, I can get help. I can add security. I have a host that will answer my questions and solve the problem. I have my security company that, I have to say, worked overtime yesterday to get everything in working order. But there were lots of hiccups on the way, which is why you saw 403 and 404 errors.

My body was so tense from hours of sitting hunched over my laptop that I went outside and mowed part of the lawn just to get some sort of physical release.

Anyway, all is well.

And, once again, I am reminded that I have the best readers in the world. The best friends in the world. Thank you for your support and for the emails alerting me to problems. Thank you for responding to my test posts. Bless your hearts. I am so, so grateful for your presence in my life.

Unfortunately, I ended up the day feeling feverish and achy. I’m not feeling much better today. I have a lot of congestion – maybe a sinus infection? I’m not sure. So I’m going to be laying low for the rest of the day.

the cupcakes

These ladies are The Cupcakes. They are extremely talented and I really love their work. They are based out of Woodstock, NY. The area I live in is full of musicians. Somehow, the Hudson Valley, including Woodstock, attracts musicians and there’s always lots of music going on. This is their new CD. The title song? A song written by my husband.

I’m busting my buttons with pride. Don is a very talented songwriter and musician. The Cupcakes have been singing their version of Trouble and Joy for a couple of years now and they decided to use it as the title song. Isn’t that neat?

You can go to their site on ReverbNation to hear Trouble and Joy.

Tonight is their CD Release Party. I hope I’m feeling better so I can go!

Oh, and in case you missed it, there was a new post on Just Let Me Finish This Page yesterday.

Oh and Bloglovin’ is somehow showing that I have a new post up, but when you click on it the text is blank. Don’t know why that is happening and, frankly, I find it sort of a pain in the tush. So do me a favor: if you see I have a new post up, just come on over directly to the blog. That’s the way I’d like you to read the posts anyway…I work hard at my blog design and the look of a post and readers don’t really show any of that. I’ll try to figure it all out at some point, but now? I’m tired.

Happy Saturday.

More Chatty Claudia on a Friday

December 6, 2013 at 9:40 am by Claudia

Well, I’ve obviously entered some other time/space dimension.

Yesterday I was absolutely sure it was Wednesday. All day long. I’m not talking about those days where you think for a minute that it’s another day but then almost immediately you realize it isn’t. No. I knew it was Wednesday and it wasn’t open to question because it was as clear to me as the fact that it was raining outside.

Then I watched the evening news with Brian Williams. He signed off with “this is the news for this Thursday…” or something to that effect and I thought, “Oh poor Brian, he said the wrong day. Even Brian makes mistakes.” I looked at the calendar on my laptop. The current day was highlighted, and it was Thursday. Still not believing it, I shouted out to Don, “What day is this?” He responded with “Thursday.” “Are you sure??” “Yes.”

What????

I’ve officially lost my mind.

Even this morning, I thought for a moment it was Thursday. But it’s Friday.

Perhaps I was abducted by aliens and lost a day.

On to more news.

While out in the dreaded overly-full shed the other day, I rediscovered this:

vintagestepstool

We bought this vintage step stool a long time ago when we were living in San Diego. Somehow it ended up out in the shed when we moved here to the cottage. Why? Who knows.

But given the fact that I’m constantly dragging the laboratory stool that lives in the living room into the kitchen to change a light bulb or climb up onto the counter for some reason or another, doesn’t it make sense that this little baby should take up official residence in the cottage? It’s a wee bit rusty. I went at it with some steel wool which helped a great deal, but it needs a more thorough clean-up when I have the time.

It so reminds me of my childhood. The vinyl is right out of post-war suburbia. I love it. Welcome, little yellow vinyl vintagey stool.

dhtub

Heidi gave me this bathtub a while back. It was part of some dollhouse furniture she acquired at auction. It had the syrupy flower decals on the sides, so I tossed it aside thinking I would never use it. But then I thought that it just might do until I found something else.

The flowers had to go. So I bought some craft paint meant for ceramics and painted it. Lord, did that paint stink! Eventually I put it outside on the porch to finish drying.

I forgot about it and left it out there for 3 days. The elements had their way with the paint and you can see some crackling on the inside of the tub. I rather like it. I’ve decided it will do for the time being. The owner of Hummingbird Cottage likes the old look of the bathtub and, since we all know she loves vintage, this aged effect makes her smile.

scootina

This morning, Don got up before me. That in itself is shocking. I got up about 15 minutes later. Scout, who is still not used to her dad rising at the same time as her mom, much less earlier, was at a loss as to what to do. She was on the sofa in the living room with her dad. Five minutes later, she came down to the den with me. Five minutes later, she went back up to the living room. Five minutes later she came back down to the den. Five minutes later, she was back in the living room. And then, back in the den. We were howling with laughter.

Poor girl, she’s exhausted.

Two more things. We watched the live version of The Sound of Music last night, though I didn’t want to watch it because I thought the casting was less than inspired. I still do. But I’m glad we watched it. It’s a rather daring choice nowadays: airing a Broadway musical live. No chance to re-record. No retakes. None of that; simply live and broadcast to millions. It’s a brave thing to do. I grew up watching live television and it really doesn’t happen anymore, especially on this scope. I thought it was executed beautifully. I was an actress for many years and I cut my teeth on Musical Theater. I can’t even begin to count the musicals I have done. Musicals remain my first love, especially musicals written with smart lyrics and beautiful melodies that do what they should do; tell the story in a heightened way. I’m not a fan of Pop Musicals where every song sounds like something else you’ve heard before and one melody could easily blend right into another into another. Nor am I a fan of Juke Box Musicals. But gorgeous melodies, witty and moving lyrics, especially by the great Rodgers and Hammerstein? Count me in.

(Side note: Kurt was played by Joe West, son of my former student from Boston University, Maura West. He was really, really good. Yay, Joe! Maura and her husband are both actors and met while working on As the World Turns.)

I hope this is the start of more live broadcasts. The American Musical is a true treasure and it needs to be honored and introduced to a whole new generation.

And finally, rest in peace Nelson Mandela. You were a truly great man. Maybe the only truly great man in my lifetime. You changed the world and we are all better for it.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
