On: The Blog, Nancy Drew, and An Update on the Rescued Horses

December 29, 2016 at 10:00 am by Claudia

Blog business first:

Oy. What a pain in the tush this has been! Last week I noticed something had been added to my blog and, at first, I thought I’d been hacked. A call to my host determined that I hadn’t been hacked but that the host had added a plugin to my site. A caching plugin. Plugins are the method in which a WordPress blog/site can be enhanced and adapted by the owner – just as widgets are for Blogger. Caching is the way in which static files can be created that ultimately enable a faster load time.

But they are not without their problems. I don’t like caching plugins and, early on, eliminated them on my blog. They don’t work so well when you post frequently, as I do. In addition, I was ticked off because something had been added to my site without my permission. I am the owner of my blogs and I determine what goes on the blog and what doesn’t. And it turns out that my host did this to all the sites under their umbrella. I called my host a couple of times last week, including on Christmas Eve, to get to the bottom of this and thought it had been resolved. Some of you, or many of you, would visit my blog on your browser and it would look as if I hadn’t updated the blog in several days, even though I had.

I can’t have that. So, last night, after receiving another email from a concerned reader who wondered why I hadn’t posted lately, I called them again. And the plugins are now powerless. It may take a day or two for all the caching complications to stop, but soon everything should be back to normal. I will keep an eye on things, of course. Sorry about that – but it was done without my knowledge and there has been a lot of blowback about it from other site owners, as well. This was not  a good idea!

Okay. Business over. Fingers crossed. If you have any trouble, just reload the blog on your browser, but that shouldn’t be an issue for much longer.

• Something arrived in my mailbox while I was in Hartford.

Number eleven in my collection. Another great cover illustration by Russell H. Tandy. It’s amazing to me that the colors remain so vivid many years later. Between my Nancy Drews and Don’s Hardy Boys, rearranging the bookshelves is fast becoming a priority.

• I want to share four links with you concerning the two local horses, Ashley and Pliers, that were rescued by the Catskill Animal Sanctuary. I just discovered some videos done by the Sanctuary about their rehabilitation and the good news is that they’ve been moved from their temporary quarters on a farm to the Sanctuary itself. If you watch the videos, you’ll understand why they needed to be worked with before that could happen.

Intro to Ashley & Pliers

Ashley & Pliers, Day One

Ashley & Pliers, Setting Boundaries

Ashley & Pliers, Home at Last

We were so concerned about them, as were other local residents, and seeing how well they are doing fills me with gratitude – gratitude for the Sanctuary and for our friend who gave them a temporary home and initially contacted the Sanctuary, hoping they would take them. They will live out their days in peace and when Ashley leaves us, Pliers will be much better prepared for life without her.

What a blessing.

Happy Thursday.

Wee Decorations and Nancy Drew

November 29, 2016 at 9:14 am by Claudia

Two nights in a row of less than ideal sleep means that I haven’t started my text research for The Comedy of Errors  yet, but I have plenty of time. Hopefully, tomorrow or Thursday.

I did run some errands yesterday and added a few holiday touches to the dollhouse(s).

11-29-christmasfireplacehc

I found these tiny little bottlebrush trees at Michael’s. I ran the idea by Caroline and she gave it a thumbs up.

11-29-christmasentrance

I now have four of these Petite Princess chests – two were purchased by me, and two were gifts. I love them.

In hopes of pleasing the resident of the Loft (whose name has yet to be determined) I added a little tree to the coffee table.

11-29-christmasloft

The bowl of Christmas candies was a part of this month’s SquintBox.

And then I decorated the somewhat hideous door to the Loft, with another Michael’s find:

11-29-loftdoor

The door is very wide and made of plastic and I do not like it. I’m thinking of changing it out with something else – maybe french doors, or some sort of two door-combination. But for now…it’s decorated for the holidays.

If you read yesterday’s comments, you know that I was determined to find those Shiny Brites, so yet again, I dragged out all my boxes and searched for that tiny little box. I’m happy to say I found it.

They were nestled in a box that also held some wrapped packages, so the amount of presents under the tree has increased.

I found the star, but it’s a bit wobbly up there at the top of the tree. It will do. I need to make a little tree skirt of some kind – the simpler the better – and then Caroline should be all set for Christmas.

I have absolutely no desire as of yet to decorate my own house, but I sure love decorating my wee little houses. As Brae said in yesterday’s comments, it’s so much easier!

In the mail yesterday:

11-29-whisperingstatue2

Another Nancy Drew with a dust jacket illustration by Russell H. Tandy. I had to take a picture of it on the French bistro table in the late afternoon sun. I can’t help it, it’s my favorite ‘staging’ surface.

11-29-whisperingstatue

This book is in excellent condition! Hardly any wear at all. The Whispering Statue  is #14 in the series. Tandy illustrated the first 22 books in the series in this format, with the script “Nancy Drew Mystery Stories” in gold at the top and a white spine. He also did the covers for 4 additional books in the series in what are called wrap-style dust jackets, where the picture wrapped over onto the spine.

I have another one on the way, which will bring my collection to 9 books. That means I have 17 to go!

It’s a rainy day today. Sigh. I know we need the rain, but there have been a lot of gray days lately.

Happy Tuesday.

Slightly Random on Tuesday

November 15, 2016 at 9:16 am by Claudia

11-15-donsbigboys

• One more Big Boy arrived last week. It’s the one on the left. And another is arriving this week. Don is collecting them because he loves them and because they remind him of something very, very important that happened in his life, right outside the entrance to a Bob’s Big Boy out in California. A pivotal moment for him and one to celebrate.

I have to say that these little guys make me smile.

The vintage cowboy in the center is also a recent find. Don saw it at an antique shop and he fell in love with it. It’s now a pen/pencil holder.

And you’ve seen Roy and Dale before.

We have a curious combination of a modern-day restaurant chain and the Old West.

11-15-shadowranch

• Uh oh! This arrived in the mail yesterday. This is #5 in the series: The Secret at Shadow Ranch. The dust cover is quite worn but there’s a clear cover over it which should protect it from further damage. Another period illustration by Russell H. Tandy.

Some of the books I receive come with a young girl’s name hand written inside the cover. I love that. I can just see that girl writing her name, claiming the book as her own. I promise to take good care of the books. I do.

I drew the names of the winners of a vintage Nancy Drew mystery this morning. The first winner, who gets my extra copy of The Mystery at the Moss-Covered Mansion  is Debbie Price! The runner-up, who will received a package from Barbara containing The Mystery of the Brass Bound Trunk,  is Julie Shaw. Barbara, good news! Julie lives in Canada, so sending the book won’t involve Customs!

I will send emails to both of you today because I need your mailing addresses.

• It’s a very rainy day here. “We need it, we need it,” I tell myself when I start to find the rain annoying. I just finished the new Michael Connelly –  The Wrong Side of Goodbye. I have come to expect excellence from Connelly and I wasn’t disappointed. I recommend every book he has ever written. Truly.

I’m headed to the bookstore today to nab a copy of Flea Market Style, which is being published again and comes out today. I’m also going to get the new Lee Child, which came out last week.

• I will be changing the font for anything that might be termed ‘political’ but that is, to me, about human rights. So fair warning: if you simply don’t want to read about that on any given day, just scroll past it. Okay?

• A note about what is happening out there. Hate crimes are increasing. I told you the other day that a close friend of mine, a well-known man who I work with frequently, has an immediate family member who was just subjected to a hate crime and a threat, as well.

Yesterday, I heard from a former student who is a well-known actress (I won’t divulge her name). She has been subjected to attacks on Twitter, accusing her of trying to pass herself off as ‘white’ when she is Jewish. (She is Jewish and proudly so.) They’ve said “Nice try, Jew.” They’ve called her “Kike.”

And a man who is an avowed white supremacist, is anti-semitic, and who peddles conspiracy theories has been appointed to a staff position in the White House.

Message received.

But not tolerated. Not one bit.

Rest in Peace to the respected and excellent journalist, Gwen Ifill. We watched her every night on the PBS News Hour. She was what a good journalist should be in this land of pundit-filled cable news. She will be sorely missed.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
