Oh No You Don’t, Nancy Drew, Despair & Safety Pins

November 11, 2016 at 9:08 am by Claudia

I woke up this morning thinking of the twenty million or so people who might lose any health insurance and wondered how anyone with a shred of compassion can crow about that. And I felt despair, which, unfortunately, is still with me.

Apparently, vile comments are not limited to my blog posts about this election. Meredith has received a couple – one specifically – that was so despicable that it prompted her to write a post about those who would presume to attack her. I’m her big sister, so I had to comment. I’m protective of her. That’s my job as big sister, even thought the truth is that she is strong and mighty.

You’d better not mess with my sister. I will not put up with it.

I am enormously proud of her. She is a giving, loving, generous woman who practices love, not hate. So don’t mess with her, commenters, or I will  come after you.

11-11-sunset

Last night’s sunset.

11-11-inouryard

In our yard.

11-11-onourwalk

On our walk.

11-11-brassboundtrunk

My friend Barbara contacted me yesterday. She has a copy of The Mystery of the Brass Bound Trunk. Since I already have a copy (pictured here) she suggested giving away her copy to the runner-up in the current giveaway. Huzzah! Isn’t that great? So I’ll pick two winners. #2 will get The Mystery of the Brass Bound Trunk, sent to you from Canada by wonderful Barbara.

This giveaway just got more exciting! Remember to leave your comments on yesterday’s post and I’ll pick a winner on Sunday night.

Let me add this: If that man and Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell do what they want to do, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will be in danger. My nephew needs Medicaid for his care. Don and I could not survive without Social Security and Medicare. We simply couldn’t make it. We barely make it with them.

And one more thing: Think about wearing a safety pin. Here’s why, in an article on The Huffington Post. I know I will be wearing one. As will Don.

Remembering Veterans today, including my dad, a decorated veteran of WWII. A never-ending prayer for no more war.

(Trying to be) Happy Friday.

On Comments, Nancy Drew & A Giveaway

November 10, 2016 at 9:35 am by Claudia

11-10-sunset

We are cocooning here at the cottage. No news. No anything that will remind us of what just happened. Even so, that doesn’t seem to stop me from waking up in the middle of the night in a panic. Then I have to try to calm myself enough to try to fall asleep again.

The fact that so many people think of this as just another Democrat/Republican battle is mind-boggling. I don’t care about whether he is a Republican. I do care that he is the most dangerous man ever elected to the highest office in this country. And the most unqualified.

Anyway, I don’t want to linger on that, though it is surely on everyone’s mind.

I had to close comments yesterday after the tone of some of the comments went in a direction that was teetering on the edge of non-civil. I figured everyone had had more than enough time to have their say. We’re all very emotional right now, I get it, but we can be civil to each other. My rules about comments are clearly stated in the footer of this blog. It’s been there since I started blogging. I’ll quote:

Also, I love receiving comments! I do, however, reserve the right to delete any comment that is in poor taste, offensive or is verging on spam. It’s my blog. Thanks!

I deleted only one comment yesterday. That particular commenter called me a name. Let’s be clear: you don’t get to visit my home on the web and call me names. You also don’t get to call other people names when we are having a discussion in the comment section. I wouldn’t allow it in my real home. I would ask you to leave. And I won’t allow it in my virtual home. There were certainly other viewpoints represented in yesterday’s comments and that’s fine. I know there will be dissension on a topic such as this one, one where we find the country deeply divided. But if you can’t find a way to write that comment without resorting to name-calling along with the equivalent of shouting, then you don’t get to play. Simple as that.

I just checked the total number of  comments that have been left on this blog since it began. Over 104,000. And I think I’ve deleted about 4, maybe 5, comments in all of that time: 8½ years. There is only one post where I asked for no dissenting comments and that is my right. And you honored that request.

So when you accuse me of deleting any comment that represents a disagreement with my point of view  – you’re simply wrong.

I like to deal in facts.

Thank goodness, the majority of my readers are passionate, but kind. They find a way to make their point while respecting those to whom they are responding.

And for that, my friends, I thank you with all of my heart.

On we go:

11-10-drewtappingheels

This arrived in yesterday’s mail. Number six in my collection. I can’t get enough of these editions that were illustrated by Russell H. Tandy from 1930 -1949. The colors are so vivid, and the period details make this girl happy.

11-10-drewsontheshelf

Here they are on the shelf.

Speaking of Nancy Drew, can you see the second book from the end on the right – The Mystery at the Moss-Covered Mansion ? A while back I bid on this book while on eBay. It arrived in the mail. I eagerly took it to the bookshelf, whereupon I promptly realized that I already had a copy. Whoops!

This encouraged me to write up a list of the titles I have, which I now keep in my wallet.

Anyway, here’s the duplicate:

11-10-giveaway

Another cover illustration by the inimitable Russell H. Tandy.

It’s in good condition, with modest wear on the dust jacket. Considering its age, it looks great.

Let’s have a giveaway! And a book is my favorite thing to give away. A vintage book? Even better. Maybe this will start your very own Nancy Drew collection.

I’ll pick a winner from the comments on this post. You don’t need to tell me you’re interested. Just comment as you would on any given day.

Of course, if you’re not interested, let me know that, too, so I can ensure that it goes to someone who really wants it.

Happy Thursday.

Cleaning, Sorting, Angst-ing

November 5, 2016 at 9:02 am by Claudia

In the midst of election insanity, obsessive news checking, and exhaustion, I cleaned the bathroom yesterday.

Ummm….Claudia? We do this all the time, what’s the big deal?

Well, as you know, I detest cleaning the bathroom and years ago Don vowed to take on that job. He has a been successful at times. But in all honesty, he has to be reminded.

About ten times. And then I sound like a nag. So I do it.

I bit the bullet and cleaned like a madwoman, which was a great way to channel all my anger and frustration and general angst into something positive. Then I cleaned the kitchen. And then I sorted through things in the den, cleaned up clutter, and urged Don to go through the mass of stuff on his desk upstairs. He did.

That happened after we ran out to our local antique store to find a little table on which to set this:

11-5-ministudio

I’ve been wanting to move it from the desk because it takes up valuable real estate there. We found a little bench, most likely meant for a dressing table, and the mini studio has finally been moved off the desk. Pictures maybe  tomorrow. But first we have to haul all the boxes of books out of here and take them to the library.

Then I’ll tackle the closet in the #office/studio/whateveryouwanttocallit.

As is:

11-5-next-to-desk

In the corner between my desk and the cabinet. That’s a very, very large Fiesta platter in red/orange. It’s vintage, from my collection that I sold many years ago. I have no idea where to store it. So it’s landed there.

11-5-firescreen

Vintage fire screen in the upstairs hallway. And some paintings and prints that were moved out of the living room when we rearranged everything. Now they’re waiting to be hung elsewhere – maybe on the gallery wall by the stairs. But they’ve been propped up against that wall for over a month.

11-5-chairwithpillows

Where pillows go when Don and I are sleeping.

You know that we chat with Little Z several nights a week. Lately, when we answer, he does the perfect imitation of the message on our voice mail. Down to the beep. He also says his full name at the top of the message along with the words, “I’m getting almost big.”

I love that boy.

Ann Marie, a longtime reader of this blog, sent me a link to this article about the Nancy Drew books. You may find it very interesting! It makes me happier than ever that I’m collecting the earlier editions and now I’m anxious to read them again. There are differences in the details of the storytelling, depending on who was writing, rewriting, and editing the books.

And of course, you know that Carolyn Keene was a pseudonym for more than one author/editor, right?

Okay. Another day to get through. Then another. Then another. Then election day.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
