Sunday Morning

August 16, 2009 at 9:06 am by Claudia

Early morning, Sunday. Love the soft light in the kitchen. You can see our little cow on top of the hutch. We bought him several years ago and named him Monty in honor of Montrose, the town we were living in at the time. Monty keeps watch over all things in the kitchen.

I’ve received some awards lately that I will be posting throughout the week. A wonderful blogger named Susan of The T-Cozy gave me her Kindred Spirit award. She posted about it here. Both Susan and I love pottery and are ardent collectors. She has a wonderful collection and a lovely blog. Don’t you just love the words “kindred spirit?” It reminds me so much of Anne of Green Gables…. I have been lucky to find so many kindred spirits through blogging. What a wonderful world has been opened up to me. Thank you, Susan. Please stop by Susan’s blog – you’ll love it.

By the way, I’ve created another page that lists my awards. Just scroll down the right column to the Awards/roses photo and click.

Yesterday I mowed…you guessed it…another yellowjacket sting in the other ankle. This is getting extremely annoying. We had the original ground nest treated – but there’s another one about 5 feet away! All I’m trying to do is mow the lawn…give me a break, bees!

I’m off to take the dogs for a walk before it gets too hot. This afternoon I get to hear my husband play and sing in Woodstock (the town, not the festival!) Have a wonderful Sunday!

Mother Nature Seems to be Ticked Off

August 3, 2009 at 5:31 pm by Claudia

A peaceful, pretty photo from the garden…since things have not been all that peaceful in our own little patch of nature. The other day, while mowing the ‘back 40’ as we call it, I apparently mowed right over a nest of bees and got stung. I yelped rather loudly as I felt the red hot poker of a stinger go right through my sock. I didn’t realize until I went back to the scene of the crime that there was a nest inside a particular hole in the ground. There were about 50 bees swarming the lawnmower. I waited until they calmed down and slowly backed the mower out of the area. Luckily I have no allergies to bee stings and after a day of pain, all was well. You better believe that I stayed far away when I completed the mowing job a few days later!

Last evening, after relentless rain, I heard a sound, a sort of SWOOOSH. I knew it was outside and after looking out various windows, I saw branches on the ground. I ran outside to discover a large ash tree had completely uprooted and fallen to the ground. It is now straddling our property and our neighbor’s property. Luckily there wasn’t a fence there. The ash trees in this neck of the woods all have some disease that is slowly killing them. We have a lot of them on the property – mostly in the back. I suppose we should have them all taken down, but that is expensive. Husband has to call his friend who has a chain saw and deal with it in the next few days.

Nature has been a bit heavy handed lately.

Gifts from the Sea

May 28, 2009 at 2:41 pm by Claudia

You know all those photos of the beach I’ve been posting throughout my stay here? When I’m not taking pictures, this is what I’m gathering ~

I keep them in this lovely old glass sugar bowl~

and this (formerly the home of keys and sunglasses)~

The shells around here are of the petite variety. I never tire of looking at the subtle color variations and markings. They are going home with me to join the shells I gathered last year.

I urge you to read this wonderful novel – first recommended to me by Mrs. Staggs. I finally bought it last week and am entranced. It is all about the isle of Guernsey during and after the Second World War and the story is told via letters. It is charming, moving, sad, happy and really, really wonderful. Thank you, Mrs. Staggs!

I just added Google Translate to my blog. Just for kicks, I translated it into French -I wonder why it looks so much better that way? Have a great day!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
