Magnolia Bakery

January 15, 2011 at 11:39 am by Claudia

Greetings from the Bunker. It is 9:50 am as I begin writing this post. And it is 2 degrees outside. I will announce it now: I have officially had it with Winter. My dreams are of the Spring. I was looking at the White Flower Farm catalogue this morning, dreaming of flowers and gardening.

I was in Manhattan yesterday and boy-oh-boy was it cold! The offices for the theater are in Greenwich Village. I got down to the Village with time to spare, so I decided to walk around before I headed over to the office. I walked down one side of Bleeker Street, crossed the street and went into a bookstore to get warm and as I went outside again, what should I see but the famous Magnolia Bakery directly across the street! Apparently, I had walked by it in a cold weather induced haze. You’d better believe I high-tailed it back across the street.

Don and I are trying to cut out the sugary treats that are our weakness, especially in the dead of winter. That particular vow was tossed out the window when I saw their cupcakes. I didn’t have my camera with me so I had to wait to take some photos until I got home. Unfortunately, I got home after dark, not a good time for taking photos, but a good time to eat cupcakes. We each ate one, which left 2 to photograph this morning.

Best cupcakes I’ve ever had. I could eat them all day long. My favorite is the vanilla. The one pictured above is chocolate with chocolate frosting. For Don. If you go to Manhattan, you must visit. I think there are four locations: on Bleeker (the original location), Columbus Ave on the Upper West Side, Rockefeller Center and Grand Central. Their web site mentions that are going to begin shipping cupcakes to ‘your home town’ in the Spring! Trust me, it will be worth your while.

I am so enamoured that I bought a little tote bag.

Not that I don’t have enough of these types of bags already, but I loved the shade of blue, as well as the graphics. They sell t-shirts, too. Uh oh.

I have to go back to that neighborhood in a week.

Where do you think I will be stopping?

Don just came downstairs and asked it it was too early to eat cupcakes.

New York State of Mind

April 2, 2009 at 8:59 pm by Claudia

Remember this little house? Yes, it is the cottage referenced in the title of this blog. I am headed home for a visit on Saturday morning. I am so anxious to see my home and my family, I can barely stand it! Fortunately, or unfortunately, I have a lot to do before I leave. Classes are ending, projects must be seen, understudy rehearsals must be attended and errands must be run. Oh, and laundry must be done. But then — I’m outta here for about 12 days total.

I will, of course, be posting from home and will keep you up-to-date on my adventures. And I will post my Pink Saturday a bit early on Friday night.

More later.

I love New York

September 2, 2008 at 11:27 am by Claudia

As you know, I’ve been traveling back and forth to Manhattan lately. I have two options. I can take the bus from our neighboring village. Its very comfortable, quiet, goes right down the Thruway, into New Jersey and the Lincoln Tunnel and deposits me right at the Port Authority which is in midtown and the theater district. Perfect. I walk one block and I am at rehearsal.

I take the train when it is a Friday or a Sunday or a Holiday weekend. We live in a spot that is frequented by tourists and weekend home owners. I learned the hard way last year that the Thruway is a no-no on the weekend. (I was working on Shakespeare in the Park in Central Park and thought I’d take the bus into Manhattan for a Sunday night dress rehearsal – Imagine my horror when we sat on the Thruway for 3 hours. Needless to say, when I finally got into Manhattan it was time to turn around and go back home again.) Since we just had a three day holiday weekend, I traveled on the train on Friday and Monday. It goes into Grand Central and I take the shuttle to 42nd Street/Times Square.

This is the view of the Hudson River from the railroad station. Beautiful, don’t you think? I get there early, sit on the bench and take all this in.

The train pulls into this glorious station. Grand Central Station is one of my favorite buildings in Manhattan. The inside is just as beautiful- The architecture is stunning.

Yesterday was so beautiful that I walked back to Grand Central Station after rehearsal. My very favorite building is the tall one in the background – The Chrysler Building. That Art Deco design gets me every time. Isn’t it fabulous?

Even though the commute is a bit long, how can I complain? I get to work in Manhattan and see all its beauty.

More later.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
