Communing with the Ground

May 10, 2012 at 10:06 am by Claudia

New schedule = late hours = sleeping later than normal. Which is why this post will be up later than usual. My fuzzy brain hasn’t had enough coffee yet. This will be a quick one, as I still have to write up notes for the actors from last night’s run-through.

Filed under the heading, “Things I haven’t be able to see at my house in 4 years,”

would be this bush in our front yard. Several years ago, I did some research and found out its name. I forgot it. It has delicate white blooms every spring. Aren’t they lovely?

And on the other side of the yard, I discovered these:

I suppose they would be classified as weeds, but I ask you, would you cut down these sweet yellow blossoms? (Josje tells me they are Buttercups. Ah!) I couldn’t. So I made the decision not to mow that part of the yard. It ended up being a non-decision, since I can’t get the mower to start, but still…

Here’s a close-up of the sweet yellow flower:

By the way, when I was taking these photos, Don (having just got up) looked out the window and saw me sprawled on the ground on the far side of the yard. He said he couldn’t imagine what the heck I was doing. Communing with the ground?

Doesn’t he realize the lengths to which we will go to get a good shot?

This was rather like the situation I wrote about in this post. You might get a kick out of it.

Have a good Thursday.

Flowers, Plants & a Big Patch of Dirt

May 3, 2012 at 9:25 am by Claudia

It’s raining a bit here today and I hope it’s raining back home. We need it! There’s been so little of it that we’ve had to get used to seeing this:

You remember that I stopped my watering when I realized how dry things were? We have a well and I decided using so much water was not a wise idea. When I was home last weekend, I walked around trying to find new grass sprouting up. There was a bit of it, but not much. I think this patch of dirt will be with us until we can reseed again in the fall. But, gosh darn it, the grass surrounding the dirt has been neatly and tidily mowed!

The garden is filling in nicely. (Note the two bathroom rugs drying in the sun.)

The hostas are really taking off. There were 2 or 3 established hostas on the property when we moved in, and I planted several more. I love them. I just planted 2 more over by the shed.

These hostas, day lilies and coneflowers are in a bed right by the front porch.

Wild Honeysuckle grows all over our property. This bush is next to the shed.

And this pink honeysuckle is thriving up on the back forty.

In two days, I get to go home for three days! I am planning on planting my window boxes, pots, and cleaning and prettying up the porch. I’ll be getting some hanging plants, as well. It’s much easier to do this kind of thing when I know I will be home this Spring. For the past 4 years, I’ve had to cross my fingers and hope Don watered everything regularly. And to his credit, he did the best he could. But let’s face it, I am more inclined to make sure everything is moist and happy.

We’re heading into the last two days in the rehearsal room. On Saturday, everything moves onstage and tech rehearsals begin. Today and tomorrow we have run-throughs of the entire show. That means lots of note-taking on my part.

Have a great Thursday.

This and That

April 28, 2012 at 7:59 pm by Claudia

Thought I’d share some shots from my walks around Hartford:

Hartford is the home of many insurance companies, including Travelers. Recognize their red umbrella?

This Alexander Calder sculpture is next to the Atheneum.
Love the deer. Or is it a stag?
An angel atop the arch in Bushnell Park.
I love this building with the beautiful inlaid tiles next to and between the windows.

And these in the more modern extension that’s been added on to the building in the previous photo.

It’s been a good week, but a stressful one. We’re in that part of rehearsal where everyone is a little tense, trying to make sure they know all their lines as we put the whole play together. I’m taking tomorrow and Monday off and Don is picking me up in the morning. I’ll be glad to get home for a couple of days, though I’m sure I’ll be mowing and cleaning much of the time! I miss my little cottage, my husband and my doggies. I need to be with them.

I’ve been eating too much sugar – rehearsal halls are notorious for sweets. I need to cut back as I’m sure I’ve gained weight. But tonight….I’m treating myself to a Drumstick. I need some comfort food. Hey, it’s been a tough week and I’m only human!

Playing with banners. I’ve uploaded 6 different banners this morning while waiting for Don!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
