Home Again

March 20, 2016 at 9:37 am by Claudia

Home again.

We arrived home around 8:45 pm last night, after driving for two days and stopping for the night in North Carolina. Yesterday, as I was driving in the mountains of Virginia, what started as rain turned to snow.

3-20 snow

And traffic slowed to a crawl when the fog rolled in. That made for a few hours of dicey driving. But, by the time we reached Pennsylvania, the weather had cleared.

A few highlights from our last couple of days in Florida:

3-20 rosevilleintarpon

We spent a few hours in Tarpon Springs, famous for its sponge divers and Greek community. There are several antique shops there and there was quite a bit of Roseville on display.

For at least twice, sometimes three times higher than I could get it on eBay.

Ridiculous! I know that eBay can put shop owners in a tough position because of the great deals that can be found there, but pricing something like Roseville (and also some McCoy I saw on the shelves) at prices that are way over the top doesn’t do them any favors. Why lose potential revenue? Dear readers: remember to do your research. Don’t pay more than you should. I clearly and audibly said – I am an actress after all – that the prices were way out of line. Not in a snotty tone, I promise. Just in a having-a-conversation-with-my-husband kind of way. I think the owners should hear from collectors who know what they’re talking about.

3-20 faience

In a gallery: the most beautiful new pottery made by a company called Florida Faience. As you know, I love vintage pottery, but I have to admit I fell for these beautiful creations. (This picture doesn’t do them justice, I’m sorry to say.) I am totally smitten and the next time I get back there, I will have some money set aside to purchase one of these pieces.

3-20 orangeshop

On the way up to I-95, we ran across The Orange Shop, a family owned business. The sign itself charmed us! So wonderfully retro. The owners have their own orange groves, where we stopped to breathe in the orange blossoms.

3-20 orangetrees

Absolutely heavenly.

We also bought a bag of oranges.

3-20 uncleandnephew

Another ukulele session with uncle and nephew. I could eat this kid up.

3-20 meandmyboy2

Little Z and me. He wears a patch for a couple of hours a day to strengthen his eye. Meredith made the patches. (He likes the zebra best.) Photo courtesy of Meredith.

I have so much more to say about Little Z and my sister and family. That’s for later in the week. We had the most wonderful time. For two people who can’t remember the last time we had a vacation together but know it’s been at least 15-20 years, this was a dream come true. Surrounded by sun, sand, sea, family and love, it couldn’t have been better.

We were very happy to see our little cottage waiting for us last night.

Happy Sunday.

Time Flies

March 17, 2016 at 8:54 am by Claudia

Oh, time flies when you’re having fun…

We’re heading back home tomorrow. The drive is daunting, but what can you do?

Yesterday, we stayed home and lazed around by the pool.

3-17 patio

I planted myself on the wicker sofa and read some Pat Conroy. Don read and swam. We felt like we were at a spa.

Around dinner time, we headed to Frenchy’s so Don could sample one of their famous grouper sandwiches. Our plan was to catch the sunset over the ocean, but we were foiled by too much cloud cover.

3-17 love

These two continue to bond.

3-17 aliciapattern

Meredith made this critter during our time here – Lovey Lamb. (Pattern by Alicia Paulson.) Adorable. It was originally for her, but…

3-17 beautifulchild

Someone really likes it. (Is he not the most beautiful child?)

It’s a good thing Meredith is already starting on another Lovey Lamb. She’s had Alicia’s Maggie Rabbit kit for a good long while (I made her a few years ago) and she has decided I should make it for her. So, I will. It will be a good project to tackle when I get back home.

Such a lovely visit. I’m missing my cottage, though, and it’s time to head back. If only I could twitch my nose and transport my loved ones to my home as needed. Wouldn’t that be lovely?

Don has fallen in love with Dunedin and Safety Harbor and this beautiful neck of the woods. Universe: we’d love to find some way to spend a few months here every year. We’re turning it over to you.

Yes, I’m part Irish. And no, I don’t really give a fig about St. Patrick’s Day. Never have. But if you celebrate, enjoy!

Happy Thursday.

Spanish Moss, Manatees & Spontaneous Swims

March 16, 2016 at 9:31 am by Claudia

Time is flying. I want to grab all the time I can with Little Z, who has stolen my heart (well, he did that a long time ago!) along with the heart of his Uncle Don. I love that boy and I’m enchanted by him. Last night, I taught him the chorus to Yellow Submarine and later in the evening, Don brought down his ukulele and held it while Little Z strummed. We all sang along. He sings beautifully.

Can you tell I’m already panicked at the thought of leaving him?

3-16 spanishmoss

We spent part of the day yesterday in Safety Harbor. It’s a lovely town. We had breakfast, strolled up and down the street, and I bought a couple of summer tops. I never tire of seeing the spanish moss that is everywhere down here.

3-16 littlefreelibrary

Another Little Free Library – I’ve seen a few of them as we’ve walked around Safety Harbor and Dunedin.

3-16 pier

We walked out on this pier and sat for a spell, breathing in the scent of the ocean.

3-16 manatees

There were two manatees swimming nearby. You can just make out their heads here. They’re coming up for air. I love manatees. (They are fellow vegetarians.) Years ago, Mere and I went to Homosassa Springs to watch them and seeing them in Safety Harbor was a delightful surprise.

3-16 water

Beautiful.

3-16 don

Hey, I know that guy!

We came back to the house and Don put on his swim trunks to take a dip in Mere’s pool. I couldn’t. I didn’t bring a swimsuit.

In yet another shockingly spontaneous move, I jumped in the pool with my clothes on!

And why not?

Today? Not sure yet, but we might watch the sun set over the water. And maybe some fish tacos for my husband.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
