More Beauty and a Dash of Joy

June 29, 2015 at 9:01 am by Claudia

Day off. But not. Just like yesterday was a day off, but not. We had some mandatory meetings yesterday afternoon and tonight I have to be at the theater at 7 for some preliminary work onstage. But, glory be, it looks like a sunny day out there so I’ll take a walk or two with my camera.

6-29 hall of Christ

This is the Hall of Christ. Chautauqua is amazing. You’ll think you’ve figured out all the architectural styles and then, bam! A surprise. This is a gloriously beautiful building, with carvings everywhere. I took a peek inside and saw organ pipes and rows of seating.

6-29 urn

One of the mossy and naturally aged urns on the porch.

6-29sideviewHofC

Another view.

6-29 hall of philosophy

This is the Hall of Philosophy. Lectures are given here. It’s on a little hill, so you have to climb a number of steps to get there.

6-29 H of P lake view

That’s the lake off in the distance.

6-29 street view

The street that is adjacent to the Hall of Philosophy.

6-29 globalwarming

And this interesting porch view. Love, love the pillow.

6-29 americancanadian

Lots of Canadian flags around here. My Canadian roots smile at that.

And imagine my surprise when I went down a street and saw this:

6-29 logcabin

Yep. A log cabin, smack dab in the middle of Victorian Chautauqua. It’s really beautiful.

Though I tend to stay away from anything political on this blog for obvious reasons, I have to say that the events of last week went a long way to restoring a sense of hope for this country and its citizens. Joy. That’s what I’ve been feeling. Joy.

And in the midst of unspeakable sorrow in Charleston, a eulogy by the President that is simply one of the best speeches he’s ever given. All that and his voice singing “Amazing Grace.”

Feeling thankful.

There’s a book review posted today on Just Let Me Finish This Page. You’ll like this mystery.

Happy Monday.

A Late Afternoon (Mini) Visit

June 28, 2015 at 9:28 am by Claudia

Rain. Torrential rain. All day long. My plans to walk over to Chautauqua Miniatures yesterday morning were foiled. It was raining so hard that a dash over to the theater office to sign out a car was equally impossible.

So I stayed in and read.

My responsibilities at afternoon rehearsal eased up enough for me to grab a car and dash over there around 3:30. They were having a sale.

No big girl camera, but I did have my iPhone with me – however, the iPhone doesn’t handle inside the shop pictures as well as the big girl camera. I got a few.

6-28 dollhouseclone

Does this dollhouse look familiar? This is the Real Good Toys version of my dollhouse. Everything is flipped.

6-28 miniflowers

The view inside a display case. I could have gone nuts buying potted plants.

6-28 chautauqua-likedollhouse

I had to get a photo of this dollhouse that one of the owners made. Very Chautauqua Cottage-like, I think. She made it as part of a contest using a basic unfinished box. She added the strips of wood to make the siding board and batten, as well as all the trim and the period windows and doors and railings. Can you tell I’m thinking long and hard about a Chautauqua Cottage for my next project?

Both of the owners used to work for the Chautauqua Institution and I had the chance to chat with them at the end of my visit. They’re wonderful women who clearly love what they do. And they’re a lot of fun! I wish I lived just down the road from them; I’d be stopping in all the time.

I promised them I’d stop in one more time before I leave. And I will.

What did I buy?

6-28 planter

This planter. Roof or porch? I’m not sure at the moment.

6-28 gardenboots

Boots for gardening.

6-28 hanging plant

Another hanging plant.

6-28 doggie1

And this little sweetie. I looked for a Border Collie like Dame Scout, but came up empty. This little Jack Russell Terrier won me over with the ‘pounce’ stance, something my girl loves to do (though less and less as she copes with arthritis.)

6-28 doggie2

I know I’m probably the exception, but I’m not a fan of dolls in a dollhouse. They usually look out of scale and, frankly, I like the inhabitants of the house to be living in my imagination only. But a little doggie? That I can go for. I haven’t thought of a name yet. When I do, I’ll share it with you.

The sale included older issues of dollhouse magazines – 5 for $10 – so I gathered up my favorites and I’m looking forward to reading them. There were also partially finished dollhouses and kits on sale and if I had a car, I’d probably have purchased something. Ah, well. It’s most likely for the best!

Today – opening festivities. There’s a barbecue later in the day, but I may bow out. I haven’t been getting enough sleep and some restful time to myself looks awfully appealing.

Happy Sunday.

In No Particular Order

June 27, 2015 at 9:28 am by Claudia

My rehearsal hours have been running into what is normally my bedtime and I’m rather topsy turvy at the moment. So I’m sharing random photos of Chautauqua, in no particular order. I’ll be sharing more photos with you all week long.

6-27 fowlerkellogg

The Fowler-Kellogg Art Center – talk about a magnificent example of Victorian architecture!

6-27 street view

A street view: you know  that I’m ready to move into that pink cottage with all that incredible detail. (This is a different pink cottage, by the way, not the same one I featured yesterday.)

6-27 bestorplaza

Bestor Plaza – a lovely park surrounded by shops and the post office. That brick structure you see is the library.

6-27 literaryartscenter

The Literary Arts Center. Chautauqua has a long history with literature. Books are studied throughout the summer, authors come to lecture, there are writing workshops, a literary prize – and Chautauqua has the oldest continuing book club in the country.

6-27 tallyho

This funky little hotel is about two doors down from my favorite pink cottage. Love the retro-looking sign.

Perhaps my favorite piece of information about Chautauqua?

6-27 gershwin

George Gershwin wrote part of his magnificent Concerto in F here.

Really, to know that Gershwin worked here and walked the same paths that I walk? Oh, my goodness – I get such a thrill! This music shack – there are many of them near the theater office where students can practice long into the night if they so choose – is dedicated to him.

Number 38: the age Gershwin was when he died.

We had our first run-through last night and we’ll have another one tonight. The opening festivities for the Chautauqua season are tomorrow.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
