A More Striking Presentation for Riley’s Dish Garden

August 6, 2014 at 8:44 am by Claudia

I don’t do much decorating these days. The walls need painting (how long have I been saying that on this blog?) I still want to build bookshelves in the den. And I want different window coverings in the living room. None of those things are urgent. I’ll get to them when time and funds allow. Other than that, things are pretty much the way I want them.

I did change a little thing the other day, based on a conversation I was having with Don. The center of the kitchen table has been taken up by the Vernor’s soda crate and Riley’s Dish Garden. Since the table isn’t that big, those two items take up a lot of real estate. Don mentioned he was a little tired of seeing the Vernor’s crate there. And then we talked about Riley’s Dish Garden, which is important to both of us, but let’s face it, the blue plastic dog dish isn’t all that attractive.

Hmmm. I wasn’t ready to move the Vernor’s crate out of the kitchen, so I moved it to the end of the kitchen island.

And I added the mug full of pens, pencils and scissors. There’s notepaper in one of the other compartments, along with my older camera and a jade plant. I tend to write out lists and pay bills while standing at the island, so this works rather nicely.

Moving it to the island meant that I had to find a place to store the cake stand and glass dome, which were pretty but were serving no purpose other than to accumulate dust. Since storage space is at a minimum here, finding a home for them took a lot of maneuvering. They had become a source of irritation, so I’m relieved they are out of sight.

Then I spent about an hour trying to figure out what to do with Riley’s Dish Garden. I knew I had to disguise it a wee bit, so I pulled out various pieces of pottery until I hit on this combination:

I grabbed the larger of my two Homer Laughlin Orange Tree bowls, then spent what seemed like an endless amount of time trying to find some little piece to put in the bottom of the bowl to work as a base for the dish garden.

But that didn’t seem like quite enough. So I plucked my vintage Fiesta platter from high atop the pantry and plopped it under the bowl.

I really like that splash of contrasting color.

Those succulents are getting a bit out of control. On the other hand, they look sculptural and I like that.

So there you are. The not-so-pretty plastic dog dish deserved a prettier presentation. To the rescue: a couple of pieces from my pottery collection.

Love you, Riley.

Tending Riley’s Dish Garden

March 25, 2014 at 8:37 am by Claudia

I’ve been searching for succulents to replace the ones that didn’t make it when I knocked over Riley’s Dish Garden about a week ago. Right now, the pickings are slim around my neck of the woods. I’m sure there will be much more available when the nurseries put out their new stock for the spring. But since snow is forecast for the Northeast today, I think that’s going to have to wait. (By the way, I think we are going to dodge that bullet, with only a sprinkling of snow. Cross your fingers.)

I did find two plants, one of which will probably have to be transferred to a pot in the near future. But in the meantime, my precious Riley’s Dish Garden has been replanted.

The tall plants in the back are from the original dish garden.

I miss my boy.

I was fine yesterday when I was adding soil and plants but, today, looking at these photos? I’m suddenly teary eyed. I see the dish and I see his big brown eyes. I can smell his wonderful scent. I feel the silky smooth hair on his ears and forehead. I tell him I love him and miss him and oh, how I wish he was here.

You never get over the loss, do you?

I was recently telling someone the story of our first dog, Winston, and his rapid decline at the age of eight when a tumor was discovered on his heart. To my surprise, I started to cry. It’s been over ten years since we said goodbye to our beloved boy, yet in an instant I can be right back in that horrible time of grief and loss. It wasn’t until a year or so after we lost Winston that I realized I had been in a sort of depression for several months following his death.

My dogs are my children. As I watch Scout lose the crazy energy she once had, see her slow down and sleep more, hear her groan because of her aching joints, with eyes and ears that aren’t functioning as sharply as they used to, I know that this time is precious. Beyond precious. We are all too aware that she is 15 and we are so grateful she is still with us. Don doesn’t like being away from her at this time in her life. I understand. She is everything to us. She is our daughter. She is the magic dog that everyone loves. Her smile lights up the room.

Ah, I’m crying again.

Anyway. I know you understand. Riley has been gone for a year and a half, though it seems like yesterday when he was here with us. Winston has been gone for over 10 years, yet in an instant, I am with him.

I like to think they are with me in spirit and soul. I hope they are. I hope they nuzzle up against me when I’m down. I hope Winston and Riley visit Scout, who has outlived them both. I hope that, when I am sleeping upstairs, they are all having a fine time together downstairs. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Once again, a blog post has taken me somewhere I didn’t expect to go. I was just going to write about the new look of the Dish Garden and here I am, writing about love and loss.

By the way, Scout is on Glucosamine and that has helped a lot. Nevertheless, she has swelling on her joints, her hips hurt, she limps a little. She gets tired easily. But her spirit is strong.

Let’s close on a ‘cute’ note. While I was at the nursery, there was a display of minis meant for fairy gardens. But fairy gardens are ubiquitous and I have enough to handle with my real-sized gardens. However, one piece stood out and I bought it.

For my dollhouse, of course.

adirondackchair

Yep. That adirondack chair. The owner of the dollhouse sits in it and reads while drinking a glass of iced tea. Sometimes she props her legs up on the porch railing. Sometimes she just sits and watches the world go by.

Happy Tuesday.

Ornaments, Bokeh & More Snow

December 18, 2013 at 8:57 am by Claudia

bokeh

Angel bokeh. Maybe I should keep the tree up all year round and start a new blog called Bokeh. I won’t do that of course, but I definitely have fallen in love with bokeh. Having a camera that allows me to play with this effect is such a gift! (Thank you Santa for last year’s BIG present of my camera.) In fact, it’s a year ago yesterday that I drove Don to the airport for his trip to San Diego and our Christmas apart from each other began. The next day I took the bus into Manhattan and bought the camera. I think we have a birthday to celebrate!

We had lots more snow yesterday. It fell all day long and added at least 5 more inches to the snow already on the ground. It’s very pretty out there today, but true to form, I was a little irritated by more snow. And so it begins. The first snow? Love. After that? Not so much. We were housebound and I was a little restless. Part of that, I think, was a wee bit of depression that the renovation on the dollhouse is finished. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself. But we shoveled (the temps are in the teens, so it was cold out there) and shoveled again. I’m just about finished with the latest Lee Child. I love Jack Reacher. And not Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, but Jack Reacher as written and described by Lee Child, blonde, big, well over 6 ft. tall. Does that sound like Tom Cruise to you?

bluebirdornament

One of my favorite ornaments, with a sweet bluebird on each side. Isn’t this lovely?

pinkornament

Another beauty. We have two of these.

winstonornament

This is our Winston ornament, in honor of our first dog. We loved that boy so much. He was taken from us much too young, at the age of 8.  We miss him every day.

guitarornament

We don’t have an ornament for Riley yet, but in the meantime, this guitar ornament I gave to Don years ago is our Riley ornament. Riley loved to hear his dad play the guitar. No matter what was going on, if Don brought out the guitar, Riley wagged his tail with happiness. Then he settled down on the floor to listen. That boy loved music. So did Winston.

My boys. I really miss them. I wish all three of my dogs were here right now and that we were all spending Christmas together. Nothing would make me happier.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
