Scout and The Bath & Some Gifts

April 3, 2015 at 8:55 am by Claudia

4-3 scout bored 2

Bored, Miss Scout?

This is the view I had as I came down the stairs yesterday.

To be fair, it was a beautiful day out there, with temperatures in the sixties. We haven’t seen that around here since last autumn. All that sun and warmth made me want to get up and do things! Scout felt the same way. So her dad took her on a walk later that afternoon, where she did her little gallop and enjoyed being out in the spring weather.

Don had a gig last night and I took a nice long bath. But somehow Dame Scout, who I thought was sleeping peacefully, found out I was in the bath and came in to tell me she had to go outside and take care of some urgent business. So there I was, getting out of the bath, wrapping a towel around myself, and running to the door to let her out. Afterwards, I slipped back into the tub, added some hot water, grabbed my book and settled into my bubble bath. However, Scout felt she needed to monitor my bath and proceeded to come into the bathroom, check out the little basket of trash, sniff my pajamas, walk over to the tub for a pet, go back out the door – about 20 times.

Oh, that girl. She makes me laugh. Nearly 16½ years old and she’s still full of the devil.

I stopped by the post office yesterday and there was one of those wonderful little cards in my box telling me that I had a package waiting for me. Susie of She Junks, a lovely reader of this blog, sent me a present.

4-3 eggcup & Trinket dish

A beautiful egg cup with a rooster, edged in gold on the rim and the base. Marked: Japan. I love it. It’s so petite and pretty! She also included the lovely wooden trinket dish which was made by her husband Ted. Do you believe it? I can’t believe he made this lovely dish!

That’s not all.

4-3 jumping jack

A jumping jack for Don’s collection! He’s very happy to have a new member of the jumping jack family, Susie.

Thank you so much, Susie. You made our day here at Mockingbird Hill Cottage. I continue to be amazed by the generosity of my readers, who are, indeed, my friends. Thank you.

Happy Friday.

Potpourri: A Story, A Book & An Egg Cup

March 31, 2015 at 9:21 am by Claudia

A little story for you:

The only clock we have in our bedroom is the digital clock on the cable box. Don usually puts a framed photo of us on our wedding day in front of the clock so he can’t see it at night. On Sunday night, we went to bed knowing that one of us had to get up in the middle of the night to let Scout out. When this happens, we figure whoever wakes up to go to the bathroom around 3 or 4 in the morning will also go downstairs and let her out. It’s something neither of us look forward to.

So. We go to sleep. I wake up to go to the bathroom, but I haven’t been sleeping all that long and I know it’s too early to let her out. So I go back to sleep. I wake up again after what I know is a solid chunk – several hours – of sleep. I have to go to the bathroom. So I get up, walk across the room, move the photograph to see what time it is. It says 12:15. I know my brain is fuzzy, but it seems like I slept a lot longer than an hour. And I’ve already visited the facilities once before. I can’t figure it out. So I go to the bathroom and I head back to bed. But I’m so perplexed that I can’t get to sleep for a while. I cuddle up to Don and finally go back to sleep.

I wake up, knowing I’ve slept about an hour or so more.

But it’s light out. What the ???? How can that be? I went back to sleep at around 1 am, slept for a little more, and now it’s light out? And that means I didn’t get to Scout in time. I jump out of bed, get dressed, run over to the clock.

It still says 12:15.

No wonder I was confused. I run downstairs, where Ms. Scout is sleeping peacefully and the clock shows me it’s after 7 am. No accidents, thank goodness.

And then I look out the door and there’s snow on the ground. I feel as if I’m in the Twilight Zone.

When Don gets up, a bit later, he yells downstairs and asks me what time it is. I say 9 am. It turns out he went through the same thing during the night. Got up, checked the clock, decided it was too early to let Scout out, went back to bed. When he finally woke up in the morning, he went to check the clock and it said 12:15 and he thought he’d slept until noon. And then he saw snow.

I have to tell you we were both feeling as if we were living in an alternate reality for several hours. It took a bit of time to shake it all off.

Later in the day, I unplugged the cable box, let it reboot, and it corrected itself.

3-31 Persuasion

I cheated. My plan is to purchase one a month. Technically, this should have arrived in April. Ah well. I love this simple feather motif.

3-31 Austens

And there it is on the shelf, along with its fellow Austens.

The egg cup I ordered from Etsy arrived yesterday. I had to wash it and spray a little Febreeze on it, as it clearly came from a smoker’s house. I used to smoke. I smoked for about 5 years. I can’t believe that I smelled like smoke during those years. It completely grosses me out now. Don, too. I quit in 1985. Don quit in 1986. Thank goodness. We met in 1994, so we were well rid of the habit by that point.

3-31 littleboyeggcup1

Here he is. He’s a little Japanese boy. Like my little cowboy egg cup, he’s sitting with his legs stretched out. These were made in Japan in the 1930’s. Apparently, there are others in this particular design, though I’ve only seen the cowboy and this little guy.

I’ve always wanted to add this one to my collection, so I’m happy he’s finally here. Marked: Japan.

Isn’t he adorable?

Happy Tuesday.

The Big Corral Fizzle & The Egg Cup Finale

March 30, 2015 at 9:11 am by Claudia

I don’t want to dwell on this, but, as I write this, there is a dusting of snow on the ground.

I can’t go there.

Besides, it’s going up to 53° so it will be gone shortly.

Nevertheless….enough already.

So, yesterday I was determined to open up the big corral for Scout. I enlisted my husband and we picked up all the dog poop that had been under the snow. Then we put straw down everywhere there was mud. Then we moved the bench that blocked the entrance.

I grabbed my camera. Don got his iPhone ready to record video. (Yes, we’re nuts.)

We let her out.

As you can see, she wasn’t sure what to do. We encouraged her. “Go on!”

3-30 scoutonpath2

She walked around a small area. We walked up the hill, ready to record the momentous event. While we were talking to each other, we didn’t notice that she’d walked back down the hill and into the house.

Clearly, she wasn’t as excited as we were.

That’s what I get for planning the ‘big event.’

Later on, she did explore a bit more. I think she was sleepy the first time. She now seems to like going back and forth between her corrals. Her kingdom has become even bigger. There will be no stopping her Dameship.

Just a few more egg cups for this 2015 Finale.

3-30 egg cups fig 13

1.  Oh, how I love this cup. The bunny rabbit as painter. Yes, you’re right if you’re thinking this was a middle of the night eBay bidding frenzy. You see why, don’t you? The painter’s smock, the palette, the face painted on the egg…who could resist? (I haven’t seen this one on eBay or Etsy for a long, long time.) One of my favorites. Marked: Japan.

2.  Truth in advertising: this isn’t an egg cup. I think it’s a toothpick holder. But I consider it part of the egg cup collection. So let’s just pretend it’s an egg cup. First of all, that cheruby face kills me. Then the little green hat, the clown-like clothing, the cracked egg…I adore it. Marked: Japan.

And finally, from my dear friend Judy, this series of four bucket egg cups. When that package arrived at my door a couple of years ago and I opened it, I squealed. Truly. And then I laughed out loud. For aren’t these the perfect words for egg cups? They never fail to make me smile and they’re on display in our kitchen on a little shelf. Love them.

There you go, my friends. The annual tour is over. Though I have some egg cups coming in the mail, so more will be revealed. Recently, I’ve seen some of the cups in my collection online on eBay and Etsy. If you’re at all interested, I can try to provide the links tomorrow. But you have to let me know, okay? It takes time to scroll through all the auctions.

New post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
