Miscellany on Tuesday

Oh, this bed. I love it. Although I have to say it’s strange having all that square footage to myself. Poor Don. The bed in his apartment sort of dips in the center. He finds the sofa more comfortable and he’s been sleeping there a lot.

And much to my surprise, I absolutely love this golden coverlet. I felt more than a little trepidation when I ordered it online. It was half off for one day (I think Garnet Hill was discontinuing this color) so I grabbed it. The whole time I was waiting for the bed – and we know that was a long time – I worried whether it would work in that room. I made back-up plans to order some other coverlet in aqua when I had some spare cash. But I love this color. I love the way it looks any time of day but especially when sunlight is pouring in the room. It just goes to show you that moving out of your usual color preference comfort zone is sometimes a very good thing.

In other news,

scoutdoinglaundry

I’m training Scout to do the laundry.

She’s a Border Collie, after all. She’s very intelligent.

Actually, Scout has developed this habit in the last year. She has to go into the bathroom several times a day to check things out. I call it ‘going on her rounds.’ She checks out the bathtub. She checks out the trash. She checks out the toilet. And when there’s laundry? She must check that out.

She’s missing her dad. She’s right by my side most of the day and I know it’s because she can’t understand where he is. Poor girl.

woodpeckerontree

I was standing at the sink the other day and saw about 10 birds flitting from branch to branch in this tree. There were two woodpeckers: one had black markings and the other was this one – a red bellied woodpecker. I ran for my camera but only managed to catch a glimpse of this guy. I wonder if it’s our friend Guthrie? I wrote a post about him that you can find here. Hello Guthrie, old pal.

I’ve been watching the Olympics like everyone else. I seem to be a bit more detached about them this time and I’m thinking it’s because I often see the results before I can watch the event. This time difference is tricky. Being on the internet is also tricky. It’s hard to avoid the results, as they seem to be everywhere.

I’m holding my breath about this approaching storm. As it moves up the East Coast, it could really wallop us. It all depends on the track. I’m praying it tracks further out to sea. I don’t have Don here to help me and I’m worried and already overwhelmed by all the snow and ice around here. I’m trying to stay in the moment and appreciate the beauty of this winter, and it is beautiful out there, but it seems to be harder to do when there’s already 15 inches of snow on the ground and there might be a lot more coming.

Winter, I love you for many reasons. But I am so looking forward to Spring.

I have two giveaways going on at the moment. Stop by my post about the Target Cartwheel app to be entered in a $1000 Target Gift Card Giveaway. And stop by my post about Suave Professionals® Moroccan Infusion Body Care to be entered in a $1000 Gift Card Giveaway.

Happy Tuesday.

In The Midst of Winter: Flowers & Scout

January 26, 2014 at 9:10 am by Claudia

impatiens

Believe it or not, my impatiens are still blooming.

They are a little leggy, yes, and not every plant has a bloom. But most of them do. I had a wild thought: will it be at all possible to keep them going until spring?

That would be a first. Whatever happens, I am enjoying the blooms in the midst of this trying winter of 2014. We had snow yesterday and more is expected tonight. The temperatures are frigid. The drips from the faucet are going much of the day.

This is when I call our house The Bunker. It feels like we’re in some outpost, far from civilization, sort of like the movie, Ice Station Zebra. Even getting to the mailbox is a battle with the wind and the falling snow and the ice.

I imagine many of you feel exactly as we do. This has been a tough winter and it ain’t over yet.

The scene outside at the moment is quite beautiful, with blue skies and the sun shining on the freshly fallen snow. I do love the light of winter, that special light that comes from sun and snow. And, of course, Scoutie loves the snow. Yesterday she was outside for a while and when she was ready to head back to the house, she loped along the path we had shoveled, a big old smile on her face.

So when I complain about the snow, I remember my little girl who has arthritis and groans with the effort it takes to lie down. But when she’s out in the snow, she’s like a puppy again. She’s transformed.

That makes me very happy.

A reminder: Tomorrow is the Linky Party for the January edition of our Christmas Critter Felt Along. The links will remain open for five days. We’d love to have you join us. I will have the party post up and active by 6 pm (EST) tonight. Hope to see you there!

Happy Sunday.

A Ride, Some Fries & Sherlock

January 20, 2014 at 9:22 am by Claudia

We never made it to Philomena yesterday. It turned out there wasn’t a matinee. But the day was lovely and slow paced, with both Don and I reading our books of choice, classical guitar music playing on our record player (yes, on vinyl!) and Scout snoozing at our feet. The day looked like it could stretch in that direction indefinitely, when Don suddenly suggested we go for a ride; the idea fueled, in part, because he needed new guitar strings.

I thought Dame Scout, who gets bored very easily on these winter days, should come along. That girl loves to ride in the car.

She stands up most of the way, panting and looking out the window, a big old grin on her face. A ride in the car, whether for two miles or, in this case, lots of miles that spanned the Hudson River and back again, is one of her very favorite things to do.

We cover the back seat with an old sheet because Scout’s hair gets on everything, quickly covering the whole surface. This was taken when we made a stop for some food.

scoutie3

Waiting for daddy to return to the car.

What did we eat? We each had a big order of fries from Five Guys. Sadly, that was our lunch. But oh, was it good! (Best fries ever.)

Don got his guitar strings, I got a magazine. Shocking, I know. But one of the few magazines I will buy is Vintage Style, which comes out quarterly. I happened to be reading another blog that mentioned it was out and I thought I might treat myself. I haven’t even opened it yet. Perhaps this afternoon with some hot chocolate?

Scoutie got to have an adventure. All in all, a lovely Sunday, topped off by the new season of Sherlock on PBS. I think this series is one of the best things on television; smart, witty, complex, brilliantly filmed and edited, and Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock and Watson are simply superb.

I had a dream last night that Benedict Cumberbatch was my boyfriend.

Don’t worry, I told Don all about it. He gets it.

It’s so satisfying to watch something that requires the audience to think, to stay with the twists and turns in the plot, that doesn’t dumb down the writing. The writers assume we are more than capable of keeping up with the words, that we have sharp minds and appreciate keen wit, rather than moronic humor.

Thank goodness.

Does most everyone have this day off? In the theater, Monday is almost always the day off, so a Monday holiday is no big deal. What are your plans for the day?

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
