Working, Missing and Allergy-ing

April 26, 2013 at 7:55 am by Claudia

bushnellarch

These trees, surrounding the gorgeous arch, are budding and leafing out.

floweringtrees

These trees are full of flowers.

Gorgeous, aren’t they?

They, along with the pollen that is flying around these windy streets, are making me miserable. Oh lord, are my allergies out of control! This morning I woke up with a stuffed up head, watery eyes, and a general feeling of yuckiness. I’ve always wondered why something so beautiful, so long wished for, so renewing, can cause such havoc in my sinuses.

Doesn’t seem fair, does it?

After today, I will have met with every member of the cast once and some twice. What a nice and talented group of actors! They are a pleasure to work with. I find that most actors are that way. Very seldom do I have trouble with an actor. The key to working successfully with an actor is to understand the way he or she works and gently but firmly guide that actor by giving him/her all the tools needed to give a full, rich performance. Equally important is knowing when to back off. At some point, some actors will not want many notes and will need to put it all together without interference. Other actors want all the notes I can give them right up through opening night. In the end, it is never about me. It’s about being of service to the actor and the director and the production. I think the fact that I was an actor helps me in all this. In all modesty, I think I handle this particular balance well. I know that is one of the reasons Darko likes working with me.

mygirl

The night before last, I woke in the early morning hours and then went back to sleep. I had all sorts of crazy dreams that left me unsettled. I must have dreamed about Scout because I woke up feeling so homesick and all I wanted to do was to nuzzle my face into hers, to breathe in her scent. I miss my girl so much that I feel a constant ache inside me.

Last year at this time, I was here and Scout and Riley were back home. Riley was declining and I worried about him all the time. And when I returned, I spent all my time taking care of him for the next 3 months. Oh, how I wish he was still with us. That sweet boy with the gentle brown eyes. I can still remember the feel of his hair, the way he liked me to stroke his face, the way he licked my hand. I’d give anything to have him back.

Sorry. I feel sadness coming over me at times, fueled, no doubt, by being away from my home and my loved ones. And memories can suddenly come out of nowhere that overwhelm me, that stop me short. I miss my boy.

You never get over the loss of a beloved family member.

Ah well. I have some coaching to do this afternoon. This morning, I am borrowing a company car and driving to the suburbs where I will quickly run into Joann’s and buy some Polyfil. And some elastic thread, which I just realized I need for Maggie Rabbit’s dress. To those of you who offered to send me some Polyfil, my heart is warmed by your generosity. Blogging has brought such wonderful people into my life. Such a sweet gift you are.

Happy Friday.

Forsythia Friday

April 12, 2013 at 9:20 am by Claudia

Clearly, Don’s a hit. He’s a charmer, my guy, and he’s a good writer. Part 2 is coming, but he had to go into the city yesterday and didn’t get back until late, leaving no time to compose his post. But take heart: Part 2 will most likely be on Sunday, as A Favorite Thing is always scheduled on Saturday. I’m so glad you’re enjoying his take on Prague and filming in Prague. Wait until he reads your comments! This all might go to his head. There will be no living with him.

Don is the type of guy that everyone loves. Including this girl:

isitdad

Waiting for Dad to get up. Is it him? Oh, please let it be him! Sounds like the old Vicki Carr song – do you remember it? “Let it please be him, oh dear God, it must be him, it must be him…”  A little over the top, Vicki; you might want to think about therapy. Nevertheless, I remember it vividly.

The last couple of days here have been rainy and gray. Today? More rain. April showers are alive and well here in the Northeast. But I won’t complain – at least it’s not snow. I clipped a few branches off of the forsythia bushes that are in our woods and brought them inside to force a cheery yellow bloom.

forsythia2

We need some flowers around here.

I’m leaving in less than a week and have to start making lists of what I need to pack. Thank goodness we can get there by car and I don’t have to worry about packing and shipping boxes. I get excited about the work, but sad about leaving my family. There’s always a push-pull nature to our kind of work, which often involves going out of town for extended periods of time. This summer will be especially tricky. I get back at the end of May. In June, Don leaves for 5 weeks in Williamstown, MA. He returns at the end of July and will be home for one day when I take off for Hartford again for 6 weeks. I’m glad we’re both getting some work and I’m certainly glad that someone will always be here with Scout, but it ain’t easy.

binding

I sewed all the binding on yesterday. Bulky queen sized quilt in my little sewing space = a pain in the tush. It took some intricate maneuvering and more than a few curse words. But I did it! Now I’m hand sewing the binding to the back of the quilt.

Then it’s done! Ta da!

Happy Friday.

What Is It About Whatnots?

April 9, 2013 at 9:30 am by Claudia

hangingshelveseggcups1

I’ve come to the conclusion that I have a soft spot for whatnots: sets of light, open shelves for displaying knick knacks. As I am a collector and have lots of knick knacks, it was inevitable that I would seek them out. And isn’t ‘whatnot’ a lovely, old-fashioned name? That alone would draw me to them. Plus, I think they are quite cottagey (yes, I made that word up) and fit in with my Christmas in Connecticut type decorating style.

The first whatnot shelf that came into our house was this one. As my egg cup collection grew, I realized that I had to find some way to display them. We found this whatnot in a local antique store – I fell in love with the fan shape at the top and this carving on the sides:

Even though I tend to paint things around here, I can’t touch this beauty. The finish is in great shape and I love it just the way it is.

Then there’s this sweet, sweet whatnot, found in another local shop several years ago. I’ve never seen another one like this. The shelves are curved and the carving on the sides is so charming. It reminds me of something that would be in Hansel and Gretel’s little cottage.

hangingshelvesden2

It lives in the den, where I discovered that it perfectly matches the framed print over the sofa. A nice little bit of serendipity.

Also in the den: this little whatnot. It came to me from Heidi’s shop, where it had been in our friend Reyna’s space. After Reyna died, Heidi gave it to me. Originally it had a dark, dark finish and the back was mirrored. I painted it and used scrapbook paper to cover up the mirror. Perfect for holding my mini pottery collection. And a lovely memory of Reyna.

Then there’s this whatnot, which hangs in the studio. I got it for a song years ago. It had a dark finish with a lot of damage, so I painted it and hung it over my sewing machine. The scrollwork on the sides is gorgeous.

My smallest little whatnot is this one:

hangingshelvesspice1

A vintage spice shelf I fell in love with at first sight. I swooned over the paint colors, the little dowels designed to keep the spices from falling off the shelf, and that art deco like design at the top. I had to have it.

hangingshelvesspice2

It lives in the studio, right under the mantel turned shelf.

As I am an unrepentant collector, I’m sure I will find more of these whatnots and bring them home to the cottage. After all, Don just gave me two more egg cups from Prague! (Photos tomorrow.) I simply have to find some space for them, right?

Don’s home. He didn’t get here until about 10:30 last night. I have only seen a few photos, though I’m sure I’ll see lots more today. Scout is currently driving me crazy here in the den. She starts at every little sound, thinking it must be her dad getting up. She is even making noises: grunts, sighs, moans. It’s her way of saying “When is he going to get up???” That little girl adores her dad.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
