Day Forty-Five

April 27, 2020 at 9:55 am by Claudia

Cold. Rainy. Over it.

I had to bring the hanging plants in last night as the temps went down into the mid-thirties. I’ll have to do it again tonight and tomorrow night. And then – fingers crossed – it looks like we’ll be out of this unseasonably cold phase.

Please?

Hello to the Hardy Boys! I’ve just started and I can’t wait to get back to it later today. Don and I were chatting while I was working on it yesterday afternoon and I asked him about any memories of reading the Hardy Boys. He remembers loving the books and eating a lemon popsicle while reading them. Such a specific and wonderful memory! It was about the time, he thinks, that his parents were splitting up, so I’m sure they provided a wonderful escape during a tough time. Then we launched into our memories of the Hardy Boys on the Mickey Mouse Club, which was presented in 15 minute episodes and starred my childhood crushes, Tim Considine and Tommy Kirk. I loved watching it and Spin and Marty and I loved anything Annette Funicello. I thought she had the coolest job in the world!

In keeping with our daily confusion as to the day of the week, Don thought it was Friday today. And I suddenly realized that bills need to be paid. I have no sense of date or day. It’s just one long day melding into another day melding into another day.

We FaceTimed with my sister and Little Z yesterday, which was lovely. But I was alarmed that Florida is  so lax about self-isolating. Mere – who continues to work – tells me that she routinely sees people without masks on and ignoring social distance guidelines. The beaches are open and the governor, who should be leading responsibly, is a fool. Yes we live in NY and it’s been hit hard, but mark my words, the same thing will happen to those states run by governors who seem to think they are exempt from this virus or that the rules are too stringent.

Some day soon I’ll write a post about our challenges as people who work in the theater and the bleak outlook facing us. I often say we are semi-retired, but the fact is we still work, we still need to work, and we still want to work. But that may not happen for a very long time.

Bare bones, but that’s all I can do for now. Time to prune the old hydrangea blooms. Time for a lot of chores, none of which I’ve been able to do. Soon.

Some of you have shared that you’ve ordered jigsaw puzzles from Galaxy Puzzles. Wonderful news! It’s good to support small businesses during this time and I’m all for supporting women-owned businesses. And you get to do a jigsaw puzzle! Enjoy.

Okay. I have to go and write some checks. Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Day Forty-Four

April 26, 2020 at 9:44 am by Claudia

My husband just came back from his morning walk and presented me with this:

That’s a nice way to start a cold and rainy day!

Yesterday, on the other hand, was simply beautiful. It was sunny and warm and we worked outside for a quite a while; Don mowing the front lawn, me cleaning the porch and filling my planters with pansies. There’s still a lot of work to be done on the porch, but doing even the little I did yesterday was so good for my soul. I actually felt the warmth of the sun on my face. Heaven.

All four of these planters have been filled with big, fat pansies, as well as the window box planter that I lives on the porch railing. The hanging plants have been put in place. I started to sweep sections of the porch and I hauled all of my pots out of the shed. And – finally – the snow shovels were retired until next winter. We sat on the Funky Patio and watched Mr. and Mrs. Nuthatch fly in and out of the bush. I can’t tell whether they have babies yet or if they’re still in planning mode. Periodically one would fly into the opening of the branch. One of them kept pecking at another section of the branch. Were they getting food for babies? Were they adding to the nest materials? We don’t know. I couldn’t hear any tiny chirps when I got close. But mostly, we tried to stay away and watch from a distance. They fly right by our heads, so they don’t seem to be shy or disturbed by our presence.

Don named them Ozzie and Harriet.

We haven’t seen Henry yet this year and like every year at this time, I worry that he might have passed away. We’ve seen the groundhog that lives next door, but not Henry. Hopefully, this will be temporary and I’ll see him sunning himself on the ramp to the shed. We’ve been calling to him, telling him we miss him.

We had some excitement the other day. I heard a loud sound and voices shouting and I went out on the porch to see what was happening. A large rental truck had somehow crashed and flipped on its side just down the road from us. When I reached the end of our driveway, I saw several people removing cargo from the truck. It didn’t seem as if anyone was hurt and about 8 rescue vehicles arrived shortly after that. The ambulance and fire rescue trucks were the first to leave, and not with sirens wailing, so nobody was hurt. My neighbors all made an appearance on their driveways. After a long winter coupled with social distancing, I got to see everyone, however briefly. There were vehicles out there well into the evening as they had to get the truck onto a trailer and that was a big job.

Today, we’re inside because of the rain. I just may start the Hardy Boys puzzle. I was going to wait for my other puzzles to arrive, but one of them won’t be shipped for another week and the one that has been shipped won’t be here until Thursday. I don’t think I can wait that long.

By the way, to clarify – I didn’t have a full-out panic attack the other day. I felt heightened anxiety, something I’ve begun to experience for the first time in my life this past year. My mom went through a period of having panic attacks. This thing I’m coping with on occasion is unsettling and uncomfortable and I don’t like it, but it’s not nearly what my mom went through. I suppose anxiety and panic attacks take differing forms and everyone’s experience varies.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Day Forty-Two

April 24, 2020 at 9:51 am by Claudia

An in-process photo, hampered by the lack of light this morning, as we have another rainy day. I’m very close to finishing and I will most likely do so today. I’m having a lot of fun doing it.

Some of you asked for sources online for puzzles. There are the obvious ones; Barnes and Noble (though they don’t have much of a selection at the moment) and Amazon (there’s a treasure trove of great paintings turned into puzzles – some of them are real beauties.) I find I’m drawn to something either fascinating enough or beautiful enough, hopefully both, to keep my interest going. I also like 1000 piece puzzles with tinier pieces. The more complex the better. It’s why I prefer harder crossword puzzles. I want the challenge. In the course of searching for puzzles, I found a few websites that sell only puzzles.

Galaxy Puzzles

Serious Puzzles

Both sites have lots of inventory and they’re still shipping. I’m sure there are even more out there. Also, I found it helps to search for ‘adult jigsaw puzzles’ so you’re not wading through a lot of puzzles meant for children.

If you find more sites, share them with us here. Thanks to Sharon who informed me there is another Nancy Drew puzzle out there with the original vintage covers (the same ones I have in my collection.) I got it at Galaxy Puzzles. The other puzzle I purchased was a beautiful Japanese print of peonies and I got that from Serious Puzzles.

We may go to the nursery after I finish this. It’s raining, but it’s going to rain off and on for the next week. We’ll see. Don needs to stock up on fresh vegetables and this is the place that has the farm stand and the nursery so we could do it all at once. Or, if it’s raining too much, we’ll go tomorrow.

I’m sure you heard he-who-shall-not-be-named suggest that, since disinfectants are used to kill the virus, perhaps it could be treated or cured by injecting disinfectant into patients. Or exposing their internal organs to ultraviolet light. Perhaps he will volunteer as a test case?

We’re hanging in there. We get restless, of course, but mostly we’re surprisingly peaceful. We’re finding that lockdown is a chance to discover new things, new passions; in Don’s case, new music to learn, in mine, the jigsaw puzzles. We just want to keep our creative juices going, our brains stimulated, and our bellies full.

Remembering my mom today. She died six years ago on this date. It doesn’t seem possible that it’s been that long. I love you, Mom. I miss you terribly.

Stay safe. Stay home. It you go out, wear a mask and gloves. And wash your hands.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
