Trunk Sorting Yields a Vintage Find

January 13, 2014 at 8:05 am by Claudia

The other day, as I was sorting through all the things I’d stashed in my vintage trunk, I came across something that I think was my grandmother’s. It’s petite, and she was just over five feet tall, and it’s handmade. Letitia, my vintage dress form, is also quite petite and you can see it fits her rather nicely.

nightgown1

I think it’s a nightgown. It seems to be made from muslin or something very much like it. Perhaps this was part of Grandma’s trousseau? Did she take it with her as she moved with my grandfather to Michigan, leaving her beloved Canada behind?

nightgown2

The neckline is hand crocheted. Such a simple and effective embellishment.

nightgown3

Each sleeve has two tucks and is finished with a crocheted edge.

nightgown4

Isn’t it lovely?

My mom passed on a lot of my grandmother’s things to my sisters and me. Last year, my adored sister Meredith found another more elaborate (and rather sexy!) nightgown that we were pretty sure had to have been Grandma’s. It was exquisitely handmade. We analyzed the bust size, we pondered whether Grandma made it or if our great-grandmother made it, and we finally came to the conclusion that it had to have been made for Grandma. My mom was about five feet seven inches tall when she married my dad. These nightgowns wouldn’t have fit her.

My grandmother was tiny and small boned. My grandfather was tall and his nickname was Slim. His sisters were very tall. My mother is tall. My brother was about six feet four, my sisters and I are tall. In a sea of tall people, my wee little grandmother stood out. So really, isn’t it obvious? This was hers.

If you click on the link to the nightgown that Meredith found, you’ll see that it must have been part of her wedding trousseau. This one is simpler, a bit more everyday, but beautiful in its simplicity.

Did you know that Meredith and I named our dress forms after each other? Mine is Letitia, which was my aunt’s name and is Meredith’s middle name. Meredith’s dress form is Caroline, which was my grandmother’s name and is my middle name. Can you tell we love each other?

Such a lovely surprise. See what happens when I start to rearrange things in anticipation of the arrival of a bigger bed?

Now I’m looking at the studio with tough and uncompromising eyes. I’m in the mood to eliminate unnecessary clutter. I’ve cleaned off a lot of the little tchotchkes on the mantel shelf, I’m taking the Reimagined Bulletin Board down for the time being. Since I have to move the bookshelf out of the way for the upcoming bed maneuverings, I’ve decided to move it permanently into a corner of the bedroom. It takes up too much space in what is a turn in the hallway. Don will be happy about that. I won’t ever be a ‘spare’ decorator, but I’m tired of too much stuff in a tiny space and that is what my studio is – a tiny space.

Gosh, this bed is causing a lot of changes!

Happy Monday.

Sorting Out The Studio

October 4, 2013 at 9:36 am by Claudia

When did I first go to Hartford this year? April? That sounds about right.

Well then, since April, my little studio has been rather a mess. I packed up 2 boxes of supplies to take to Hartford, along with Mabel. Then when I returned in late May, knowing I would be leaving again at the end of July, I simply stacked the boxes on the floor right by my chair.

Yesterday I grabbed a couple of hours while Don was here to keep an eye on Scout and I finally unpacked those boxes and put everything in its proper place. I grabbed the camera and quickly took some pictures. No styling. No perfect lighting. Just as is.

studio1

This is what greets you at the top of the stairs. If this is your first time visiting the studio or craft space, whatever you want to call it, it’s located in the hallway upstairs. I don’t have a separate room for my things. This is it. Consequently, it’s almost impossible to get a complete shot of anything, especially in front of the cabinet – too narrow.

studio2

The skylight is a welcome source of light. (It’s rather dark here today as it’s going to rain, so excuse any graininess in the photos.) You can see Mabel, back in her rightful place.

studio3

A closer view of the mantel turned shelf.

studio3a

My little nisse is hanging from a hook. And on the little shelf? My original Lamb With The Party Hat. See how tiny he is?

studio4

Underneath that vintage doily cover is my trusty Elna.

studio5

I refolded all the fat quarters that I took to Hartford. Oh fabric, you are so pretty.

studio6

My bookshelf, beloved muse Lambchop and some framed press that I’m rather proud of. The little vintage toy piano was a gift from Don. The other lamb, made of paper, was a gift from my sister Meredith.

studio7

Letitia, wearing my bloomers (from a play I was in, long ago.)

studio8

The cabinet that I got via Craig’s List, formerly painted in a combination of taupe and blue, now a soft pink.

studio8a

The corner between the cabinet and the door leading to the guest bedroom/Don’s studio/office. That’s a flannel covered mini-design board on the wall and my chalkboard on the door. The silk parasol was a gift from my cousin when I was a young girl. He brought it home from Korea.

studio9

On the board? My current favorite quote.

studio10

Little treasures and supplies inside the cabinet.

The light isn’t the best, but take heart, if you want to see more you can find a lot of other photos of the studio on the blog.

Today I have to find space for all the reference books I’ve stashed in various totes since April. They go on the bookshelf in the bedroom. More sorting. More arranging.

And I will be watching my Red Sox in the ALDS at 3:00!

Scout update: Little miss continues to improve. I wish the bleeding would stop but yesterday, when I had to run to the vet for some special food, I happened to see the doctor who operated on her and she assured me again that it was normal. It only happens when she urinates – I guess that area is still healing. We have towels stashed in all her favorite places in which to recline, including the ‘tunnel.’  Last night she was so ravenous it was like she was hopped up on speed! But she’s eating and I can’t tell you how happy that makes me. We are still really tired as we haven’t been sleeping all that well.

Here she is. This was taken just a moment ago:

recoveringScoutie

Scout says thank you for all your prayers and love and everything. We do, too. Have I told you how much you all mean to me? A whole lot.

Happy Friday.

Presents from Prague & Work in the Studio

April 10, 2013 at 8:53 am by Claudia

When I was showing all of you my egg cup collection in the days leading up to Easter, I mentioned that I was thinking of expanding it – collecting souvenir egg cups, for example, and pretty china pattern egg cups. I don’t remember whether I mentioned this bit of information to Don; even if I did, he usually doesn’t retain the random comments I make during the course of a day, much to my frustration. I mean, isn’t everything I say worth its weight in gold?

Look what he found for me in Prague:

eggcupprague

This sweet egg cup in the traditional shape.

eggcupcollage

And this square-shaped egg cup. Both of them have scenes from Prague. Praha=Prague. These aren’t vintage, they’re new. That sweet Don has given me the first two egg cups in my souvenir egg cup collection! I really love them.

Then I opened these:

paintedeggs

Beautiful Czech hand-painted eggs! Aren’t they lovely? Don imagined I might want to place them in some of my egg cups. Smart Don!

paintedeggincup

Clearly these were made to be ornaments but right after I took this picture I removed the ribbons and now they are displayed in various egg cups throughout the house. Like this one:

humpty

Humpty has a head!

Sweet husband also got me a t-shirt, which shall remain in it’s wrapping until I go to Hartford. It’s black. One does not wear black in this house full of flying white Scout hair, which is a pity, since I love to wear black.

Don kept telling me that he was working on finding something for me in Prague and he spent a lot of his spare time searching it out. He had the hotel staff working on it as well and hoped he could pull it off. I must admit I was intrigued. Well, he’s still working on it – even spent his last morning in Prague trying to find it. Here is his idea. Since he knows how much I love my favorite book ever, To Kill a Mockingbird, he was trying to find me a copy in Czech. They do exist. His idea is to start me on a collection of foreign language editions of the book. Isn’t that the coolest idea? I have several English editions and one that was signed by Harper Lee. Adding foreign language editions is a brilliant idea. So cross your fingers that Don can pull this one off. The hotel staff translated the title for him, so his search continues.

crowdedstudio2

Yesterday, I spent some time in my crowded studio. Yes, it’s cute, but trying to multi-task there is frustrating.

crowdedstudio

The iron gets plugged into the bathroom outlet, the ironing board blocks the entrance to the bathroom, I have to squeeze by the board to get into the bedroom – you get the picture. And I was working on two floors: a cutting mat was on the kitchen table, along with my rulers and rotary cutter; the quilt was on the living room floor so I could measure it, and then I was upstairs at the machine stitching together strips for binding.

binding

All done. Now I have to sew it onto the quilt.

I had a thought yesterday. Mabel doesn’t have a ¼ inch foot. Ella (the Elna) does. Which machine do I take to Hartford?

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
