Salt

February 5, 2018 at 9:12 am by Claudia

A crappy weather week ahead. Yesterday, it snowed, then in the early evening it turned to rain, which has left us with a frozen mess. I have to go out and salt when I’m done writing this post. And Wednesday looks to be a day of significant snow.

Oh joy.

I may be stuck here for a while, as the temps are in the single digits at night, which means I have to protect the pipes from freezing.

Oh joy, again.

Maybe I’ll become one of those hermits who live in the wild and are snowed in for the winter and don’t emerge until Spring.

Anyway, enough of that. It’s sunny…that’s a good thing, right?

I had a lovely time and Rick and Doug’s yesterday, as usual. Then, when the snow started falling in earnest, I headed home. Even though I didn’t blink an eye at driving in snow when I was a young thing growing up in Michigan, I do blink an eye now. I remember driving clear across the state in a blizzard in order to get to a friend’s wedding. No biggie.

I miss that girl, but she has been replaced by a wiser woman who would much rather stay home than deal with snow and slippery roads.

Don has been urging me to watch Peaky Blinders  on Netflix and I’ve tried. I’ve watched two episodes, and though the show is beautifully filmed and the acting is great, it’s a bit too violent for me and I’ve yet to connect to at least one character. I know who is supposed to be the protagonist and I also know that they young men are damaged, especially by what they saw when they were fighting in WWI, but I’m not there yet. I promised Don I’d watch the first season, which consists of 6 episodes, so I’ll hang in through #6. I just finished Grace and Frankie  over the weekend. When Don was still here, we watched Godless, starring Jeff Daniels, on Netflix. Excellent. I really loved it. Also violent, but there were actual good guys.

Okay. I have to get moving. It’s time to salt. Then I have to get out of here so I can buy more salt.

Exciting, right?

Don moves to the theater today and tech rehearsals begin. Less than two weeks until the first preview. (And the release of the cast album!)

Happy Monday.

Winter Chores

January 29, 2018 at 9:58 am by Claudia

You’re seeing the fruits of my labor of several hours yesterday. The ice slab, which covered the entire area next to the funky patio and out beyond the orange cones, has been broken up. I worked on it off and on yesterday. Since the temps were in the forties and didn’t go below freezing overnight from Saturday to Sunday, it was the perfect time to tackle it. It’s going to get cold again by mid week and will stay cold for at least another week, so it was now or never.

I was feeling sore last night, but I feel fine this morning. I’m going to throw some salt on the area this morning and run some errands. I’m having lunch or dinner with Rick and Doug today and tomorrow I’m going to look in on their sweet dog, Sam, while they are gone for the day. Then it’s off to NYC on Wednesday morning.

My sister has good news and she blogged about it, so stop by and read up on the latest!

Oh and I have to make cookies at some point today so that some guy I know will stop saying how much he misses eating them.

I’ll be in the city on Wednesday and Thursday and then I’ll come back home on Friday as the nighttime temps are going to drop into the single digits and that means running a drip. Maybe I’ll tackle that last wall in the kitchen? It needs a coat of yellow paint.

Happy Monday.

Little Changes

January 26, 2018 at 10:01 am by Claudia

Some late afternoon sun. It may be cold but I can handle it when we have a sunny day like yesterday. And today.

This will seem like a little thing to you, but to us? Big. When we moved in here there was a black microwave – a big one – from the previous owners. Since it worked perfectly well, we kept it. You might remember that the previous stove was black and the dishwasher is black. The refrigerator is white. Go figure. I never liked the black stove and we all know that Stella has taken its place. The dishwasher has never worked so we use it as storage and one of our goals this year is to buy a new one and have someone hook it up correctly. (The very first time I used it 12 years ago, it leaked onto the wood floor.)

So. We’ve had this microwave for 12 years – it still works – but it takes up so much space and ends up being a big black hole on our counter. And counter space is something we have very little of. Fast forward to Don and me in NYC last week as we realized that there was no microwave in the apartment and Don definitely needed one. We bought a small Sunbeam microwave in white from a local hardware store. Perfect size for that small apartment and, we thought, perfect size for us at home! I tried to buy another one from the hardware store before I left for home, but they weren’t open. So I found one online via Wayfair and it was delivered yesterday. It’s not particularly exciting looking, but I have more counter space!

Once we get a working dishwasher, we can get rid of this black one and the dish drainer that lives on the counter and we’ll have even more counter space! Whoo hoo!

Now I have to lug the heavy black microwave out of here and take it to the recycling center.

Also bought this the other day:

It’s another Rae Dunn piece and I hadn’t planned on buying any more of them, but I saw this crock at Home Goods. I can’t resist fonts and graphics. This one is larger than the previous crock we had been using, which is a good thing. And I’ve repurposed the other crock as a pot for the ZZ plant I have upstairs.

I’m trying to figure out when I’m going to the city. I have to be here if the temperatures dip, which they will be doing on Tuesday. So I could go in for the weekend, right? But I’ve just heard from Anastasia  and they want me to check in on the show next week. So I may hold off and go in Tuesday or Wednesday. Then I have to be back by Friday as it’s due to snow.

I can’t wait for Spring when I won’t be tied here due to weather. We’re both frustrated by it, but it’s the reality that comes with living where we do.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
