A Cup (or Two) of Joe & Some Pretty Yarn

September 23, 2013 at 9:13 am by Claudia

You know how you see some object in a store or on a blog and somewhere in your brain you register that you really like it? And then you see it over and over and you think, “Oh, well now I’m seeing it everywhere” and you (meaning me) dismiss it? That happens to me frequently. A few weeks ago I saw a photo somewhere in blogland of a mug/bottle rack filled with colorful cups and mugs. One of them was a large Anthropologie cup in a pattern that I loved – the very thing I had rejected so many times in the past.

Well, darn it! There it was back in my head again.

And I thought to myself, “There are very few things you can afford at Anthropologie, Claudia. But you can spring for a pretty cup or two.”

So, yesterday I escaped from downtown Hartford and drove to Anthropologie. I do love that store and we don’t have one near us back home. They sure know how to style and market their merchandise. It’s always a treat for the eyes.

Ah. Do you see why I love it? It’s oversized and holds a lot of coffee or tea. The little flower right under the  top of the handle is such a sweet touch.

Well, I couldn’t help it. I got one in red, too. I had to, aqua and red are the colors of this blog.

They’re for me. I can safely assure you that Don will not be interested in them.

I had some herbal tea in the red cup yesterday afternoon. And I’m drinking my morning coffee from the aqua cup. They make me smile. And they sure beat the mug I’ve been using with the words “Spring Green General Store” stamped on the side. Nothing against Spring Green. It is a lovely little town and is yet another place where I lived for several weeks while on a coaching job.

There are flowers at the bottom of the cup – a lovely surprise.

I’ve also been feeling the siren call of crochet. It happens every year, like clockwork, as the temperature begins to drop.

yarn

So I stopped at Joann’s. This is the incredibly soft yarn I use on some of the scarves for the Etsy shop. It’s made of silk and bamboo.

Oh, and before I forget:

That white building you see on the left is the one that is reflected in the waters of the pond on Saturday’s post. If you look closely at those photos you’ll see bits of the building rearranged and repeated, creating that incredible design. I took this photo yesterday during my walk around the park.

I temporarily halted my reading of The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny to read Michael Connelly’s newest, The Black Box. It was on the New Fiction shelves at the library. I would have been tempted to buy it, so I ended up saving some money. I’m halfway through it and have to finish it soon because I’m leaving on Saturday. (And since I saved money, I feel I can validate the cup purchase. See how that works?)

Two of my former students won Emmy’s last night and they’ve both won them before. Dear Jim Parsons won his third Emmy for The Big Bang Theory. And Abraham Higginbotham won his second Emmy for Modern Family. He is a writer and producer on that show and he was onstage during the acceptance speech. I taught Abe at Boston University when he was a young man studying acting. (He’s a good actor, by the way.) Former students, now good friends; I am thrilled for both of these great guys.

Happy Monday.

Yarn, a Book & a New Year

December 31, 2012 at 8:09 am by Claudia

yarn

Do you think I have enough yarn in this vintage laundry basket? Between the yarn I use for Obsession Scarves and the yarn for the afghan, I’m pretty well stocked. I’m so glad I found this vintage basket on Craigs List. It has turned out to be the absolutely perfect way to store what I call my ‘active’ yarn. I’ll be returning to work on the afghan tonight with my little girl snuggled on the sofa next to me. I’m going to pick her up in an hour or so. I miss her so much!

New Year’s Eve has never been a big deal to me so for those of you who are ready to express sympathy that Don and I aren’t together on this day, don’t worry. Neither of us make a big deal of it. It truly is just another day for me – one that I used to feel pressure to celebrate when I was younger. If you weren’t doing something for New Year’s Eve, you were considered a bore. Now, I am a girl who doesn’t like to be pressured to do anything. And if I feel that pressure, for better or worse, I will almost always turn in the opposite direction. I like to stay in, watch some old movies and go to bed early. By the time New Year’s Day comes around, I am ready for the holidays to be over.

And you will notice that I don’t do a “Top Ten Posts” or “Best of 2012” post. I would have no idea how to narrow my daily posts down that way and, besides, I don’t really care. I rarely look at my stats and how would I determine something like that? I’d rather do something like “The Top Ten Bizarre Things That Happened to Me in 2012” or “The Ten Things That Made Me Laugh Til I Cried in 2012.” Maybe next year. Or not.

mybookstore

Do you remember me writing about this book? I included it on my Christmas Wish List.  I saw it the other day at B &N and treated myself to it. It’s absolutely delightful. It’s full of essays by many, many authors on their favorite bookstores. Each of the writers paints a wonderful portrait of what makes their particular favorite special and I find myself wanting to travel the country on a bookstore tour! I’ve written about the changing world of books and bookstores more than a few times on this blog and if you feel the way I do, you will love this book. It just might make you believe that there are still great independent bookstores out there.

Hey – I got two of the items on my wish list! My camera and this book. Pretty good.

I have to go get ready to pick up Scoutie.

Have a nice, safe New Year’s Eve.

Happy Monday.

Yarn and Hot Chocolate

September 10, 2012 at 7:56 am by Claudia

Hurrah for cooler weather! We had big, scary storms here on Saturday evening. Yet another huge limb from one of our trees came down. There was volatile weather all around our area – NYC had a tornado! That’s a rarity. Anyway, the storms finally cleared out all the oppressive humidity. Thank goodness.

Leaves are falling. Already. Yikes.

Readers of this blog know about my love for hot chocolate. I will admit that I’ve been pushing the boundaries of acceptable hot chocolate drinking weather. Somehow, the minute the yarn comes out, a signal is sent to my brain and I find myself craving a fix. Ghirardelli’s – Chocolate Mocha. Yummy.

The yarn? That’s an Obsession Scarf in the making. It’s autumn. Time for new scarves in the Etsy shop.

The perfect understated English title for a garden book: A Gentle Plea for Chaos, Reflections from an English Garden.

What can I say about the weekend? It was rather uneventful except for our trip to Urgent Care Saturday morning. It seems to be the year for tetanus shots here at the cottage. I gently urged Don to check our gutters as that big old storm was due later in the day. There he was, up on the roof, trying to clear one of the downspouts, when he cut his finger on a rusty piece of metal. We cleaned it out but after the sort of conversation that goes back and forth between “Do you think I really need to get a shot?” and “Maybe I should get a tetanus shot to be safe” we decided to err on the side of caution. (I had to get one earlier this year when I cut myself on the rusty wires on my old wicker rocker.)

We’re covered in that department for the next ten years.

On Friday we had to have the car inspected. We knew we had to get two new front tires. Then we crossed all our fingers and toes hoping that our almost 12 year old car would pass. After the tires were replaced, oil was changed and wiper blades were replaced – it passed. Sigh of relief.

More zinnias. Remember the spider web and the beautiful yellow and black garden spider of a few posts back? The day after I wrote about her, I went outside to see how she was doing. Gone. No trace of the web, no trace of her. When I initially searched for information about her, I read that these spiders set up a web and stayed there for a long time, unless a predator was nearby. So there must have been some sort of predator nearby. (I hope she didn’t think I was a predator!)

Anyway, I sort of miss her.

I picked up Riley’s ashes on Friday. More tears. I seem to cry most every day.

Have a Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
