I spent most of the day yesterday being a slug. It was still a little rainy, the skies were gray, I couldn’t get motivated. By mid-afternoon, Don felt we needed to get out of the house, so the three of us got in the car and went for a ride. We stopped at a charming family-owned nursery that’s about 10 miles down the road from us. I’m trying to find something other than impatiens to plant in the barrels by the funky patio. Couldn’t make up my mind. Any ideas?

The minute they heard our voices, more and more chickens appeared.
That’s a peacock in the background. There was another gorgeous male peacock in the pen but it was too dark in there to get a good photo. I’m well aware that every blogger out there seems to be raising chickens, so if you’re suffering from an overabundance of all things chicken, forgive me. And don’t ask. No. I’m not going to be raising chickens. I would get too attached and there are too many predators around here. I’d never forgive myself if something happened to one of them. And, in typical me fashion, if everyone is doing it, I tend not to.
We returned home and then, as if someone zapped us with a burst of energy, we mowed, weeded, planted seeds and, seeing that we are due for 90 degree temperatures for the next few days, put in three window air conditioners.
By the way, the day I came home from Hartford, Don and I checked to see if the quilt top will fit in the place I had in mind for it – the stairway wall. Hurrah! It fits perfectly.
Don loves this design so much that he wanted to hang it right away. I explained that it isn’t a quilt yet, that I have to add batting and a quilt back.
Then I have to quilt it.
His disappointed reply: “How long will that take?”

I was rather sluggish yesterday and need to get moving today! I think it’s my reaction to dealing with assorted house-related issues plus a wee bit of emotional overload. Blah, blah, blah. Enough excuses from me. I’ll take your lead and get moving!

we have the heat back here as well. I asked one of my sons to get over here today if possible and get the air conditioners in. I THINK I will put off the one if the upstairs bedroom until the nights get hotter but then again,, while he’s here….
I like Lantana for an annual as far as ones that I buy in pots. From seed, zinnias, cosmos, etc. Impatiens have some problem around here according to my sister, that started last year, so I only bought one New Guinea Impatien and no more …..

I laughed out loud at his question ‘How long will that take?’ Perhaps you can give him a lesson in hand quilting ??
PS – I totally understand liking chickens but wanting to raise them yourself – they are such peaceful little ladies and it would be so hard to have one or more fall victim to a hawk or coyote. But, I couldn’t help wondering what Scout would think of chickens in her back yard ?!!!!
I know – they are so sweet! Scout, would be fascinated and I think, not too happy about the interlopers in her yard.
That comment made me chuckle and think the exact same thing!!! hehe
I am not sure what part of the country you live in, but geraniums are real work horse flowers – so are petunias. They are pretty prolific. Our office has a plant person that maintains our plants. She advised me to find “work horse” plants and then a few “precious” ones to keep close so you can keep an eye on them.
I’m not a big geranium fan but petunias are awfully pretty! I definitely need work horse plants in those barrels. Thanks, Madonna.
Claudia, I Love the Chickens. I grew up on a farm,where we always had them around no special kind, just what ever kinda showed up! lol. I also refuse to conform to the trends,one of which right now being buying expensive pure bred Bulldogs! (around here anyway)With so many not so fortunate Beautiful animals just waiting,begging to be part of a family. It just doesn’t make sense to me. But no down on those who prefer to. -Judy A-

That quilt fabric is so stunning, I love it!!! Can’t wait to see the pic of it hanging in your home. Yesterday I felt the same and after a trip to the thrift shop in the morning I made some coffee and moved a few pieces of furniture around and baked for the kids. Today will be more of the same. That quilt will look great on the wall. Love those colors. I so admire you and Brenda for your quilting skills. That’s a gene I never got! I can paint, knit, crochet, but not quilting. That’s so nice Don loves it. We used to have chickens but not now. We do have wild peacocks in our hills here. They seem to rule the road, so they think. You can always tell when somebody new ventures into our area as they’ve stopped their car and are watching the peacocks!
When I worked at the Old Globe in San Diego, the peacocks from the SD Zoo (which is next door) would fly onto the roof of the outdoor theater and squawk!
One spring the trees in our driveway were way overgrown, and it was a rainy day but my daughter and I were out walking in the rain and exploring. A Fed Ex driver pulled into my drive and as he went to get out of the car the peacocks went nuts with their squawking and screeching. His face was filled with fear! I think he thought he’d pulled into Jurassic Park!

What a nice day for the three of you..I also think Petunias would be a great choice for your barrels..I had no problem finding the energy to do things yesterday..It was my 60th birthday and I went to 2 flea markets..a greenhouse..2 thrift shops and at least 5 yard sales..I came home exhausted but had so much fun..It did get quite hot and humid for a while though..we seem to be having the same weather lately…It is so sweet that Don loves your new quilt that much..how good that must make you feel..

I thought about salvia – but this is a part shade area. I wonder if it would do well there?
I’m having a bit of a sluggish worry about money kind of day, too, which is completely counterproductive. There are so many things I need to be doing, but I guess we all need time off occasionally. My daughter raises chickens, so hopefully I will get free eggs when I move to Atlanta :)

I feel like a slug when it’s gray and rainy, too. No motivation.
I must say that is great that Don loves the (soon to be) quilt!! My friends have chickens and it’s as close as I want to get to raising them!

We’ve had so much rain here, too, we just yesterday mowed and planted some planters (between storms). I really love the quilt, too…the design is so different, and I love the wonderful colors!
