Crane Watching

October 9, 2014 at 8:11 am by Claudia

This is happening right outside my window:

crane1

This massive crane, which was assembled a couple of days ago, is getting ready to place those cooling units on top of the building next door.

crane4

Ummm….cranes make me nervous. I hope the operator of the crane is really, really good at his job.

crane3

Lowering the hook (my totally-ignorant-about-these-things name for it.)

crane5

Getting ready to attach the units. What if the darn crane swings in the wrong direction?

crane6

Wait a minute. In the three minutes I spent on the computer, the two units are gone. Surely they couldn’t have placed them on top of the building yet?

crane7

Moving yet another piece.

crane8

Oh, I see. The crane took the units off the trailers and moved them even closer to where I am currently residing.

Clearly, I’m fascinated and a wee bit horrified by it all. This would be a good time to remind myself that I have notes to write up before today’s rehearsal. I have work to do.

But the beep-beep-beep of the crane moving and the thought that those units will soon be hoisted in the air right next to my window leaves me a bit edgy.

Scout, after getting me up especially early to take care of business, is sleeping through the whole thing.

Happy Thursday.

I admire your discipline and persistence to publish a blog entry every day and enjoy reading each one. Last night I attended the first preview of “Our Town” at Long Wharf in New Haven. I think the production was well done. It brought back memories of the last time I saw the play on stage – at my high school in 1965! Dr. Gibbs was the perfect family doctor of the past.

Oh, lucky you! I don’t know yet when I’ll be able to see it. I will pass along your comment to Don, who will love it. Thanks, Kathy!

I would be a bit nervous, too, but what a different and great view you had.

It’s still going on, Karen. I’m trying to check in every 10 minutes or so to see when they actually lift those units to the top of the building.

Hi Claudia, It’s fun watching the goings-on around us that we generally take for-granted. The units were probably made at Evapco, here in my hometown where several friends and relatives work and my husband trouble-shoots and works on those massive cranes. Not that one though because most of his work lately has been on marine cranes mounted on barges and tug boats etc.

I saw a name on the units but they were too far away for me to read it. Thanks for that info, Kelly. And bravo to your husband who works with these enormous cranes! Wow!

Just checked the name on another unit and you are right!

That’s funny, that is exactly what happened at my high rise condominium building yesterday except that it was right over my top floor balcony. Slightly unnerving to watch, but also kind of cool – like giant Tonka toys.
    Your photos are great! :D

I have been so busy working I have not had time to read my favorite blogs. Looks like you are busy, busy and in a new location. I look forward to catching up with you again.

    Scout is probably
thinking, well you humans have your things and we canines have ours…I’ll take sniffing at the park any day–LOL

In our small town once, a helicopter was brought in to hoist a steeple to a church. I think the entire population showed up to watch :-) I admire the men/women in construction who can accomplish such fetes! Me, I feel powerful if I manage to parallel park without any cars around :-)

That would be nerve-wracking to watch! And to hear!! Glad Scout is taking it all in and sleeping through it. That is a good thing since she will then probably also ignore it while you are gone during the day. Hope that you are feeling better every day.

A bit better every day but the cough is still hanging on. The actor who plays Claudius has had the same thing – for even longer than I have – and he’s still dealing with the cough. Dreadful.

Ha! When I saw your post title…first I looked at the picture trying to find the cranes! Never seeing the crane! Yeah…I’d be curious too! The beep, beep would have me hooked for sure…now get some work done! ;)

I wish I was seeing beautiful cranes instead of a big, hulking crane! Work is done. Eating some lunch before I head off to rehearsal.

They haven’t hoisted any of the units up yet, but they have brought the old ones down to the ground. I won’t be back til after 6 tonight. I wonder if they will have finished?

When I saw the title, Crane Watching I thought for sure I was going to see pictures of birds. I think that would of been more relaxing.

I just love that when my cat or dog wakes me up early and then they sleep the day away. Ahhh to be them.

I figured I’d hook you in this way! Actually, I was aware that some readers might be expecting birds. I love cranes (birds) so I would love that to be what you are seeing here today.

Beep Beep was mildly annoying, it would have been more so if I hadn’t been so interested in the crane.

I’d be a bit nervous too. Cranes can be intimidating, but at least this one is on the ground. What’s really chilling to me are the ones at the tops of in-progress skyscrapers. It takes a special breed of person to be able to work on those buildings – God bless [and protect] them all. Try and take a cue from Scout and ignore it as best you can. Although the constant beeping doesn’t help much with that tactic, does it??

Claudia, I love these little glimpses that you provide of Hartford, the scene of my partially-misspent college days. Just look at that blue October sky and the golden sunshine. Thank you for posting those photographs.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
