Equal time. These guys were feeling left out.
As I’m sure many of you are, I’m thrown off by the time change. There I was, sitting in my cozy chair in the den, reading a good book, when I realized this pesky time change made it later than my body felt it was and I had better hightail it upstairs to write a quick post.
So here I am.
Again. Wind tunnel. Though slightly less than yesterday, there is something about the placement of this upstairs room – right at the front of the house – that makes it sound much windier than it does in our bedroom. Same with the den. It’s making me a crazy woman. Several days of this, along with even more as the Nor’easter heads our way on Tuesday, might force Don to put me in a strait jacket.
For my own good.
On the other hand, the time change gave us one hour less of this Presidency. Thank you for that.
I finished The Dollhouse by Fiona Davis yesterday. A bit clunky, but an engrossing story that I really enjoyed. I would have thought it a bit clunky not matter what, but to be fair, it wasn’t helped by having just finished the Amor Towles.
Now I’m reading On Turpentine Lane by Elinor Lipman: delightful, witty, good storytelling and wonderful characters. I’m almost done, so a journey to my little local library might be in order today. Yes, I have a large TBR stack, but I’m what I call ‘book restless.’
We’re awaiting the dreaded Nor’easter. The amount predicted keeps changing. As of this morning, it’s 8 – 12 inches.
I feel another scream coming.
All that being said, I vigorously cleaned the bathrooms yesterday. I swiffered. I dusted. I vacuumed. I straightened up my desk. I read – a lot. I’m keeping myself occupied.
And I cuddled with my soon-to-depart husband. Thank goodness he’ll be here to man the snowblower on Tuesday because that thing is heavy.
I may have to make some biscuits. In fact, I will be making some biscuits.
How many of you are going to be impacted by this storm? It’s been a crazy winter, no?
Happy Sunday.
Leanne S says
Stay safe! Did you know that biscuits are the same as British/Aussie scones? So add jam or honey and/or whipped cream for a tasty treat. I need to whip up a batch myself. A friend gave me homemade lemon curd a couple of weeks ago and its really good.
Claudia says
These are my grandmother’s Cloud Biscuits – or as some call them Baking Powder biscuits. Only butter on them for me!! (I have to have them same way they were when I was growing up!)
Melanie says
Good morning, Claudia. It’s almost 10 am here and I’m still sitting here in my pajamas with my mug of coffee. I need to get in the shower and head to Trader Joe’s – my first solo shopping trip since my surgery. I’m dreading it because I know the store will be packed – not only because of it being Sunday, but because of the snow storm coming our way tonight into tomorrow. I am hoping that if people see me shopping while using a cane, they might be a bit more considerate and not apt to run me down?! Anyway, we’re supposed to get 4-7″. Not as much as you guys, but still way too much, especially at this time of year. It just figures – I’m to start physical therapy on Tuesday. It’s not going to be fun walking through a snowy, slippery parking lot with a cane. Oh well, it is what it is. I’ll just be extra careful.
Claudia says
Those people had better be considerate, Melanie! Be careful, my friend!
Chy says
Our predicted “storm” left a few cm’s of the white stuff and some cold temps but it’s supposed to start warming up today and we’ll be melting by Tuesday. Thinking of you and Don as you cope with another blast of Winter. Hope it changes quickly and Spring heads your way.
Take care Claudia.
X Chy
Claudia says
I cannot wait for Spring! But it looks like it wants to take a bit of time before it comes our way!
Suzan says
Don’t hate me – but we’re in the 80’s and folks are already complaining of the heat. Ok curse me a little hehe
Claudia says
I just may have to curse you a little, Suzan! xo
Donnamae says
I don’t think we are connected with your nor’easter….but, we are to get about 7-8 starting tonight. Oh fun! I’ve got a hankering for homemade soup…so it’s off to the store for me this morning, or what’s left of it. I hate the thought of shopping on a Sunday…but what you gonna do? I guess I’ll be forced to cuddle up with a good book tomorrow and watch the snow fly….I am so tired of winter. Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
Homemade soup sounds wonderful, Donnamae!
All we can do is grin and bear it, I guess! Stay warm and cozy.
Shanna says
Oh, that pottery collection is stunning! Such pretty colors…love them. Sorry your weather is being difficult, still. We hear that temps at the lake are hovering above and below zero Yikes! Good time to not be there. Sounds like it’s time to tuck into a nice hot mug of cocoa!
And as for the time change, I think it’s time to do away with that, don’t you? It doesn’t seem to serve the same purpose as it did in an earlier time.
Claudia says
I agree. No one seems to like it much. Don and I were saying that it should be done away with just this morning.
Vicki says
Oh, I so agree; why-oh-why do we still have to suffer the time change like this? We were doing just fine without the switch! This morning, we are so ‘off’ and can’t seem to get motivated. My husband slept in and he never sleeps in. It’s after 1pm here and we just ate breakfast, seriously; completely weird for us. And now it’s too hot outside to do anything (except maybe go to the beach and actually SWIM in the typically-cold Pacific Ocean; we’re supposed to get in the 90s this afternoon in SoCalif.). Yes, the heat is in most everyone’s conversations here, as snow is in other parts of the country. My old, stored car with its long-since-dead air conditioner won’t get driven now til after dinner this evening (should we cool down a little), if at all. Sigh.
Wendy T says
Don’t you hate how weather is sooooo controlling? Bad weather, usually ba mood. Good weather, sunny mood…sigh. Umm, biscuits! Enjoy. My daughter made Portuguese Sweet Bread last night. We were running out of the Challah she made earlier in the week. Had Challah French toast and vegan bacon for dinner. Love “breakfast for dinner”.
Claudia says
Oh yes! I love breakfast for dinner, too! It sounds delicious, Wendy!
Leslie P. says
My favorite line of your entire post? The very optimistic claim that DST means one less hour of this presidency, haha. I suppose we have to take the good news when we can find it these days.
The wind is slowly driving me crazy. My husband and I took down 7 trees last month—hemlocks that had been killed by the wooly adelgid but were still standing tall. This week I have been so thankful that we did so—the winds we have had would have sent them into our roof, I have no doubt. I retreat into my duvet with my books, but the winds find me. Thankfully, they abated long enough for the snow to fall, but it looks like they will make a return this week.
You bake biscuits, I roast a chicken. For some reason, whenever there is an imminent storm, I crave a roasted chicken with potatoes. I will happily share, if you will send those biscuits my way—I think they would be a nice complement.
Stay sane. I have been cleaning to avoid the 24-hour news cycle, so I think of the massive cleaning project as a lead-in to Rachel—a daylong lead-in, but a lead-in nonetheless.
Peace and warmth–
Leslie P.
Claudia says
We’re preparing for the storm – over a foot expected. And wind. Again.
Trying to stay sane!
Vicki says
Oh, I do remember your Cloud biscuits; can you post the recipe again?
Gosh, I’m sorry the weather is so disturbing, Claudia. And to think you have this other big thing coming at you; well, wow. I have no idea, really, what a nor’easter is, since I’m on the west coast, but it sounds very ominous. Surely this has to be the last big snow, no/yes?
For me today? Well, we’re getting my vintage car out of offsite storage and driving it, for maintenance not fun, as I watch the temperatures creeping up; we’ve already been in the 70s before 10am and this car, too, has no a/c; it is to be blistering hot here today and tomorrow with no cooling for at least 10 days ahead (at least cool enough for me). Been planning it awhile, hoping I’d feel well enough, but I’m going to make the somewhat-lengthy drive to Susan Branch’s talk in San Luis Obispo next Saturday and I sure hope it’s under a canopy as the weather is supposed to be, what else, hot and in the 80s and I don’t want to be in direct sun. (It’s a garden/outside venue.) If so, I’ll make an appearance but I won’t be able to linger. I’ll miss the meet & greet; oh well. When I first bought the ticket sometime back, AccuWeather ‘thought’ it would be much cooler, with a threat of rain. NOT. Trying to stay positive. I’m a big fan of hers but have never met her in person although she’s often had these affairs in California since it’s where she’s from, originally, and she has her store (another home) here and a lot of family/friends in SoCalif (what we call our beachy Central Coast); so, it’s a frequent destination for her.
The Roseville is so beyond eye-pleasing; it’s great you’ve rescued all that into such a lovely collection. It’s perfect, even if you never bought another piece. I always love seeing your Roseville so much.
Claudia says
We’re dreading the storm which promises lots of wind and over a foot of snow. I’m thinking it will be a blizzard.
Judy Ainsworth says
At the very least Claudia, The definition of a blizzard?
Severe Snowstorm ,with High Winds. Best Wishes from Downtown 72* Salt Lake City. I can’t lie it feels fab! All the while wishing you a short cut to Spring! Judy A- XOX
Claudia says
Sounds exactly like what we’re getting. High winds, 15- 24 inches of snow, 1- 4 inches per hour. Definitely what the coast is getting.
Mary Vieira says
Here in RI we too are expecting a big storm too. I have a Dentist appointment Tuesday , I hate to cancel, I am that one of few who love to go to the Dentist. I by choice have cleanings 3x a year. Of course it might make sense if you know I worked in the field of 20+years. I will miss having a log fire in house so comforting. I love snow and cold but now about ready for the flowers to poke their heads up and see what survived the winter. I plan on removing three hydrangeas bushes this year that have not done well, so out they go. I am thinking of Yuccas, the back of the house faces due south all day maybe they would do better! I already have a cactus that has survived one winter. Stay warm.
Claudia says
I am so ready for Spring, Mary!
Vera says
Still windy and bitter cold here. 22″ forecast for us. I’ll make some soup and bake some bread or biscuits…and will stay in!
Claudia says
Definitely stay in. It’s going to be dangerous out there, Vera.
tana says
Crazy winter here on the west coast too. And wind! I remember seeing a, I think, made for TV movie. It was over many nights. It was the dustbowl during the 1930’s. And the wind made one poor lady lose it and kill all her kids after another windstorm that lasted for days upon days. I have lived in areas with lots of wind and know how it can set your teeth on edge because it lasts so long. Like we say around here, “I AM SO READY FOR SPRING!!”
Claudia says
It does set your teeth on edge! I’ve had my fill, thank you very much!
Noelle Sweeney says
Hi Claudia: Yes we here on LI are bracing for the same storm. I’m so over the winter- on with Spring. I got up early to put in a big pot of stew, so with your biscuits we would have a nice dinner! Will put that book on my RBR list thanks.
Claudia says
Stay safe, Noelle!
cathee says
lovely blog!
Claudia says
Thank you, Cathee!
Kim says
Currently in Cleveland it is 26 degrees but it was a gorgeous day today. Unfortunately we are in the path of the storm and expecting 8-11 inches starting Monday afternoon.
I am baking shortcakes because the strawberries were so inexpensive today.
We got up early this morning and went to a rummage sale and a pancake breakfast. Yum! I got a stack of magazines to read while we ride the storm out.
Claudia says
We’re crossing our fingers that oil gets delivered before tomorrow. Then we’ll wait out the storm.
Linda @ A La Carte says
It was so cold here this morning! I made it to church and a meeting afterwards. Then lunch with a few friends. I ended up taking a nap I was so tired could not keep my eyes open. I hate daylight savings time. I agree it is so time to do away with it. I’m going to have soup for dinner to warm me up! Take care and stay safe. Hugs!
Claudia says
Dreading the storm, but what can you do? So today is all about preparation.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
We have 6-8 coming our way after midnight this eve. ugh. With not a pile anywhere, and not a ditch remaining with snow in sight, it is even more depressing to think about it. Oh, how I hope that they are wrong!!
Not a fan of the time change. Do you remember in the 70’s during the energy crisis, when we didn’t change time for, I think it was, 2 years?? I’m sure I remember that really did happen……
Hope you had a nice day and some wonderful biscuits!!! I was thinking about baking something tomorrow. It always seems to be a good time to do that when we are experiencing a “winter wonderland”. blergh.
Claudia says
Biscuits are going to be for tomorrow night, Chris, when we’re snowbound!
Tammy says
My NY boy is none too happy that this week is Spring Break and there is nothing spring like about the weather at all.
Claudia says
I don’t blame him!
Nancy Blue Moon says
Expecting 4-8 inches here in Central PA…that is the last time I checked….lol…Have to run to the grocery store before it starts…it’s going to be a great time for chicken corn soup!..Keep warm and be grateful that you are off duty as far as work this week!..
Claudia says
I’m glad I don’t have to work, for sure, but we also have to get Don on the road and the storm will make that more difficult.
Vicki says
I need to shut up and stop commenting so much, but have to add: I had a boyfriend, decades ago, who decided to travel the U.S. (and Canada) in a VW van after college. He planned on a year (thought he was well-prepared; ah, youth…) but what he did NOT plan on was encountering ultra-severe weather and sleeping in that van on the road, i.e. he felt like he was going to freeze to death and traveling became more and more difficult. So, it turned out to be a 5-month trip only. Clearly…young guy, no big job yet but willing to work his way on the road, albeit on a super-tight budget; big plans but not giving nearly enough consideration to tricky weather as the months went by (and there again, we Californians are clueless when it comes to your kind of winter!).
