Crochet, Weaving, Dollhouse & Snow (Again)

January 21, 2011 at 11:37 am by Claudia

This just about sums up my snowbound life of late. If you added a copy of The Merchant of Venice and some cookies, this vignette would be perfect. And no, I didn’t arrange this photo. I looked up from my laptop and this is what I saw on top of the music cabinet: Monty the cow surrounded by dollhouse furniture and another obsession scarf on the hook. Speaking of scarves, here is #6:

Blocked and ready to send to my Best Friend Since Junior High. It was not called Middle School in those days. I much prefer Junior High. “Middle” sounds like a sort of limbo, but “Junior High” sounds like one is right on the edge of experiencing the wonders of High School. Why did the powers-that-be feel the need to change it? Leave well enough alone, I say.

We had more snow last night. I’m not kidding. We’ve had 5 major snowfalls since December 26th. I did manage to escape the house yesterday. I broke out of our icy prison and ran errands. It sounds mundane but after being stuck here for several days, it was heaven. I hit Michael’s, Lowe’s, the supermarket, the Vet’s and the yarn store. Then I chopped away at more ice on our driveway. This weekend we are supposed to have below zero temps. We’ve changed the name of Mockingbird Hill Cottage – it’s now Ice Station Zebra. (Remember that old movie?) Here’s one positive – in one of those conversations you have while shoveling snow, my neighbor told me that when the snow pack stays around for a long time, it’s bad news for ticks. And that’s good news for us.

You know I adore my sister, Meredith. Besides being a wonderful person, she is a mega-talented knitter, crocheter and now, weaver. She bought a loom a year or so ago and she has been creating such gorgeous stuff. Look at this scarf. (I stole this from her blog.)

She has an extremely busy life, with two teen-age boys, her work as an Occupational Therapist and caring for my parents who live just a few miles away. The loom is set up in her bedroom and gives her the perfect excuse to retreat from the craziness in her house and create.  You know I’ve mentioned setting up an Etsy shop….well, Mer and I are thinking seriously of setting one up together. We’d carry handmade items as well as vintage. And you’d have a chance to buy her gorgeous woven creations. And maybe some of my scarves…or whatever else I can dream up.

More snow here too and super cold today. At least that means it will be clear and sunny. I have to say I love it. Much better than a bleak wet winter landscape. Wow that scarf is gorgeous. I have to learn to crochet. You and your sis should definitely set up shop together. Stay warm, Pam

i know your pain! it’s super frigid here in chicago and i am stuck inside, yet again, with my 6 month old baby. to add insult to injury, my husband and i share one car and he mostly takes it to work (in the suburbs)! anyway…you should definitely start an etsy shop, i get so much joy from having mine – i sell mostly vintage items.
    take care and stay warm!

I love the idea of you and your sister setting up an Etsy site! Between the two of you, you would have some fabulous items!

How is the doll house coming along?
I love the little pink chair in the photo.
    Hugs,

I went to Jr. High too — seemed much more grown up than middle school to me even though they were the same grades. :-)

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about etsy shops (I have 2!). In my zip code, you can arrange online for the mail carrier to pick up your packages so you don’t have to trudge through the snow to the p.o. — so easy!

Thanks for showing my new scarf. It is softer than you can imagine. I went to the yarn store today to get more ideas for weaving projects. The purple scarf I took off the loom yesterday is amazing! Etsy here we come!

I sure do remember Ice Station Zebra – hopefully things won’t get that bad! I think setting up an etsy shop together would be great! And even when my kids were in middle school, I dorkily referred to it constantly as Jr. High. Stay warm! Ann

You and your sister would make a winning team for sure Claudia. Go for it! The color of her knitted scarf is just yummy.
You guys have been hammered with snow this year. We have been having some mild temps lately and ours has packed down a lot. Hey, I hope that’s true about the ticks. Amazing how scared one can be over something so tiny. But the bite can be bad news.
I’m glad you got to get out, even if it was to run errands.
    sending hugs

Hi Claudia, I think an etsy shop for you and your sister is a wonderful idea! More goodies for us to drool over! I have been snowed in too quite a bit. Our driveway is known to all the delivery men (oil, UPS…) as the worst in town–long and steep. When it’s this bad hubby takes the SUV to work and I’m stuck! But, lots of projects get started. Please tell Riley and Scout that my lab hijacked my blog yesterday and put up a post for me. I think she has a little crush on Riley. Don’t tell Scout that part. Have a great day and stay warm. More is coming our way this week. Linda

I’m in agreement with the others…your idea of opening an etsy shop with your sis sounds like a great idea! You both do such wonderful work.

We haven’t had the amount of snow you all have, but it keeps on coming. We’re due for more tonight. Seems like we just get the drive cleared, then BAM, it hits again. PLUS it’s very cold…that makes it even worse.

Hope you are having a great weekend. dana

The ice and snow sounds horrid, but the Etsy shop sounds divine! Maybe being snowed in has its advantages afterall — more time to create!
I agree on the middle vs junior high thing. I still call it junior high, and probably always will!

    Hi, Claudia,
Brrr…it sounds very cold there, my friend. It is cold here in Central Texas but not nearly as cold as where you live. Continue to enjoy your scarf making. They are so pretty, and I love your colors. Wishing you lots of luck if you decide on opening up an etsy shop. I went to junior high, too. Ours was 7th and 8th grade which I like a lot. In my opinion, 6th graders do not need to be with 7th and 8th grade. Too much difference in maturity level, physically and emotionally. Okay, I am off my soap box. Enjoy your weekend, stay warm and cozy! Vicki

I hope you go for the etsy shop. You will have fun. I have always heard a hard deep freeze is good to get rid of bugs and ticks but I have yet to see a poor tick season around here….I wish. :)

claudia, you always brighten my day. i just love this post…monty the cow, snow up to your eyeballs, ticks getting wiped off the face of the earth, and scarves galore!!! so fun. my mom knits about 3 scarves per week or more, so i get it!! i don’t knit, for fear i may just consume myself with wounds. i am so clumsy and can’t see well….that is my excuse…but i love knitted things!!! your scarves are so pretty. good luck with etsy….you and your sister would be yarn stars for sure!
stay warm and i feel your pain on being housebound!!

I’m so sorry you are still freezing, Claudia. It’s chilly in Florida today, but we haven’t had snow. I’m driving again today, so I am up early to do a little blogging before I leave.

I love your handmade things. You and your sister both are so talented. My sister is like you all. She can make anything, and I have been the grateful recipient of afghans that are phenomenal as well as scarves, though she has far less time now. I always enjoy seeing what you’re making and wish you success should you decide to go the etsy route. I know you’ll do great!

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
