Daffodils and Egg Cups

March 25, 2024 at 8:54 am by Claudia

Our first fully opened daffodil. Unfortunately, I’m sure it got pummeled by the torrential rain we had all day on Saturday. We got at least two inches, maybe more. My activities that day were accompanied by the sound of the sump pump turning off and on every 3 minutes. It’s still cold, but I think, as of today, there will be no more lows in the 20s. I’ve missed the sound of the peepers, as they hide when it’s too cold. Hopefully, they’ll come out to play in the next couple of days.

We are winding down on our egg cup tour. It will end either on Wednesday or Friday.

I love these so much. They are new cups and were a gift from dear friend and reader, Judy. Aren’t they delightful? They are displayed on the top of the egg cup cubby, along with the next egg cups that I’ll show you.

These are double egg cups in the Harlequin line by Homer Laughlin pottery, the manufacturer who also made Fiesta. For some reason, the turquoise and yellow cups aren’t showing the same band of lines as the other two cups, but they’re there. Something to do with lighting. Anyway, small cup on the bottom, bigger cup on the top. I found two of these cups locally, and reader and friend Margaret sent me the other two when she was remodeling her kitchen.

I truly love that so many of these cups were gifts from readers, my mom, friends, and Scoutie/her dad. They all have a story, either of how I found the cup or how the cup came to me via a gift that arrived in the mail. (You know I love everything having a story.) The egg cup cubby is pretty full, but there’s still some room there and I do keep an eye open for anything that really interests me. But, at this point, it has to REALLY interest me. I have two coming sometime next month from my cousin. I have a few bookmarked on eBay. And I’ve been fighting the urge to take a look around the local shops, but I may give into it this week. Easter is the time when every antique dealer pulls out the egg cups.

It’s sunny today. I’m in the midst of rediscovering the spy novels of Daniel Silva. I read many of them several years ago, but I stopped at some point – I don’t know why. I read about his newest and it happened to be on the shelf at my local library. I forgot how fun they are to read and, most importantly, how engrossing. Right now, I need books that really capture my attention, where the words flow easily and I’m taken along for the ride. I’m working my way backwards to wherever I was when I stopped reading them.

I didn’t get around to answering Saturday’s comments. I hardly ever do that, but I’ve decided that’s okay every once in a long while.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

I do love the ‘what came first the chicken or the egg’ cups!! Our pollen counts are so high and my nose and head know it. A long week of headaches and sniffles. It will pass I know. Moving is going so slowly but at my age I guess it’s all I can do. I’ll be getting some help soon to move furniture and packed boxes. It will be good to be settled. Hugs!

Our pollen counts are starting to climb, but not so much as yours. It will be a while until we get a high pollen count. I know how miserable that can make you feel. Take care of yourself, Linda.

      Stay safe.

I thought, “Sad daffy.” Poor thing; getting pounded. Still they try!

Gorgeous deep blue (bordering on purple) flowers (tiny, on long stems) coming up in my meadow patch this morning. The roses; nothing much; they’re struggling; they need SUN. Lots of warm-hot sun. I seek it, too, but the wind lately is always chilly-COLD. So, it pushes me back indoors.

The Homer Laughlin cups just look rich in quantity-quality with regard to color and glaze and ‘heft’; how to describe it to myself, but substantive as opposed to delicate porcelain(?); reminding me of sturdy and colorful Fiestaware. To me, a 1950s feel; they’re wonderful; reminding me of Mom’s Bauer plant pots from 1955. (I only have one left; it’s large. Amazing chartreuse in color, but she had one like your egg-cup color on the left, in that dusky rose; also one that was dark forest green, another that was a deep burgundy. One got broken; two got stolen (she should never have had them in the front yard, readily seen from the city street; a friend and I tried to tell her in the late 90s/early 2000s that vintage Bauer had become SO collectible-valuable [and apparently the OTO window washer my folks had hired knew his ‘antiques’, or so we think {the pots sat in a row along a wide ledge under the bank of windows; had been there for over forty years; I’m repeating myself by bringing this up again but it’s always such a thorn in my side as I loved those pots SO MUCH; Mom had become quite resistant to change, and she wasn’t about to move the pots to a different location, like to the rear of the house, not when the Bauer had always had their one special place from the very beginning}]).

Isn’t this indeed the lovely thing about collecting, of how we’ve scored the items which sing to us, kept them, enjoyed them continually; appreciated them; LOVED them(!) and who knew their former story, but they’ve had a new one with us; so, they live on and will have yet another tale with someone else long after we’re gone.

An aside, to the blog: You don’t have to answer comments. We know you read them. Am glad that you answer when you can, but it should never be burdensome for you. And I’m grateful for the egg-cup tour even though it’s coming to an end. Has been a nice Easter present for your readers, Claudia. Thank you as always for sharing with us. Am looking forward to egg cups to come, as in the ‘new’ you’re mentioning.

Sure glad you have sun today. We do, too, in Southern Calif. We’re presently in the mid-40s temps here (my house) at 8:30am PST. Unfortunately or fortunately in how one wants to look at it, we’re to have rain again over Easter weekend. NOT looking forward to driving in pouring rain to an adjacent town to go pick up my fresh-baked hot cross buns on Saturday, day before Easter; but, after not having any of this English specialty (so delish, with the doughy buns stuffed with fruits and tantalizing spices) for a long time, I just MUST have my holiday tradition/treat, and it’s great I could buy as few as a half-dozen of the small buns to also make it an affordable purchase!

Have a great weekend. Hope you’re getting favorable opinions about Don’s vehicle repair.

Boy am I mixed up on my days. I keep thinking today is Friday. “Have a great weekend.” Ha! I think I need a cup of coffee. My husband’s job gives him Mon-Tues as his days off instead of the conventional Sat-Sun; it really throws me off.

Glad you’re going to get those hot cross buns, Vicki! I know you love that tradition.

I love Bauer pottery and always wanted to start a collection of it. I do have one piece of Bauer. I often think of Bauer and Fiesta as related, though they’re really not.

Hiya Claudia! I’ve been absent a long while, came back just in time for the tour of egg cups. What I love about the egg cups most is how much you love them. Your enthusiasm shows.
I have many things I’d love to share with you.
I am so very glad that you’re still here.

I have been enjoying your egg cups. Another blog I follow Wyse Guide was displaying a jadeite restaurant egg cup. He said the bigger bottom part is to keep an egg warm if you are eating two. Do you eat the egg out of the small part? I’ve never had soft boiled eggs. Looking forward to seeing more of your flowers as they sprout up.

I don’t think that’s why the double egg cup was invented. I suppose you could do that, but that’s not what they’re for. One side is to hold an egg that you might want to eat from the shell. The other is used to serve a soft boiled egg.

      Thanks so much, Olivia.

      Stay safe.

      hej, olivia.

i recently found “wyse guide” and enjoy it (though i’ve never canned food and don’t live on a farm). i like the images he’s shared about his farmhouse. i don’t know exactly where, but he lives in iowa, as do i. :)

hope you are in the middle of a very good day! stay safe.

Hi Kathy. I started watching him about a year ago. Maybe we just like to watch or read things from nice people. I don’t have much in common with him or Claudia. I don’t garden or collect things anymore. I just find the things about their lives that they share interesting. Glad you commented. I wanted to ask some one from the mid-west. Have you eaten ham balls? Never heard of them before Kaleb made them. If you have tried them are they good? Hope you have a nice rest of the day Olivia

          hej, olivia!

sorry for the delay. sometimes i don’t have timely access to a computer and my phone’s keyboard is still fussy.

i don’t garden, either, and really haven’t added to my collections (except for art) in a long time, but i love to learn about people and the lives they live, the lives they choose and claudia is such a kind and interesting person (as is her don) and through that, her words and photos has drawn such a lovely community of people here to “mockingbird hill cottage” … lots of reasons to be here!

to your question … no, i haven’t ever ate ham balls. my parents, both excellent cooks, made sure that, especially when growing up, my brother, sister and i had exposure to many different foods, but never made ham balls. i haven’t eaten meat for at least 40 years, but used to work with someone who, over the course of twenty years, was well-known for ham balls. all i know is for her they included a mix of ham, pork and some other kind of meat (beef maybe?) and they were very popular at potluck dinners. so, sorry, not much help from me!

hope you are having a good start to your day. stay safe!

Love all your egg cups today. Fun to imagine the back story for each individual cup. We had a lovely spring day today after the snowfall on Saturday. Hope you and Don get some nice spring weather soon. Hugs, Elaine

love the egg cups, maybe especially the ones with a beatles’ lyric on them.

and that you didn’t reply to comment yesterday if you didn’t want to or have enough “free” time. please do what’s best for you!

anyway, thanks for the ongoing egg cup tour.

hope by now that you’ve received the best possible news about fixing don’s car and it won’t be awful.

extra-busy week here … lots of appointments (why i’m getting here so late in the day), including one related to my “final arrangements”. not easy, but good to have in place and good to have help before then, too. looking forward to friday … no appointments at all. hope to knit another hat (can knit one in about four hours with chunky yarn and bigger needles) and of course spend lots of time with family and celebrate Easter. i hope to also finish reading “war and peace” by then. before starting “a gentleman in moscow”, i will take time to look up definitions for a long list of words from “w+p” that i wasn’t sure about (but kept reading because of the love of the writing and story) … probably 200 words, maybe more! :o

had some rain overnight and this morning … loved it. might get more tonight. we need it.

hope you all are having a good day. stay safe!

The colors of those Fiesta cups are gorgeous. I remember back when you found your display cabinet for all the egg cups. What a fortunate find that was!

Your poor daffodil looks sad. Ours have been slowly coming up for weeks now, delayed by the dips to freezing temps every few days. We did have some crocuses open a week ago and they are still persevering in the snow. Rain and more rain in the forecast but at least it isn’t any more snow.

    Take care,
    Kay

It’s especially nice to have stories and faces (or at least names!) connected to your egg cups. Memories of travels, special gifts, happy hunting. I love that.

It was 61 today here — I hope it is coming your way!

I love the what came first the chicken or the egg cups!!!!! Now we need one more with the FINAL ANSWER to complete the set!!

We were supposed to get rain the last few days but we received less than 1/4 inch. The farmers are saying when they are out in the fields, as they move the tractor along, there is nothing but dust. And we barely had any frost at all in the ground over the winter. After last summer’s drought, and lack of snow this year, I wonder what the growing season will bring for us.

Have a good evening! Take care.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
