Day Eighty

June 1, 2020 at 9:57 am by Claudia

June 1st, the eightieth day since we went into self-isolation. It’s also my parents’ anniversary. They would have been married 74 years today. Heck, they are  married 74 years, because I am absolutely sure they are together. I love you Mom and Dad. I miss you.

We’re having some coolish days and nights. We didn’t need to use the a/c last night. I plan to do a bit of weeding today and maybe some weed whacking, as well. Today is ‘grocery’ day. Don is going to the local farm stand to get produce and then we’re picking up our grocery order from the  supermarket. Picking up – at least here – seems to be the way to go. Securing a slot is quite easy. It used to be next to impossible, but either they’ve changed their system or people are not using it as much. Both times we’ve ordered lately, we’ve been able to secure a slot for the next day.

Our supply of disinfectant wipes is perilously low, as is everyone’s, I gather. We do have rubbing alcohol, etc., so we can always resort to that.

The morning glories and zinnias have poked through the soil.

Let’s see, what else? I’ve been working on the puzzle, chatting with Little Z on FaceTime, spending a fair amount of time outdoors, and staying away from the news. I know what’s going on, of course, I’ve written about it here. But I am not falling down that rabbit hole.

Speaking of rabbits, I haven’t seen one bunny rabbit here this spring. I’m wondering if Don’s work up in the woods, making new paths, clearing old ones, has disturbed them. They may have moved on. Their absence and the loss of Henry is making me sad. I don’t even see the other groundhog that used to hang out here. Birds, bees, butterflies – yes – but no little critters except chipmunks and squirrels. I miss my little friends.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Enjoy your peaceful abode. First the virus, which is continuing…now the riots. I live in Indianapolis…enough said…have good good day.

I had the most wonderful encounter with a chipmunk the other day. I was sitting on my screened in porch, he was face-to-face on the other side of the screen, eating some plant material. I watched him, he watched me. I thought I would play the blink game and held on as long as I could. Seconds after I blinked, he did too. Isn’t nature wonderful!

i love and absolutely agree with your fourth sentence … true love never dies and, to paraphrase billy graham, because of a price paid by Jesus and our faith in Him, we just (and that’s a big and the best possible “just”) change bodies and addresses. :)

glad you have the air conditioners in … and that you haven’t yet needed to use them 24/7.

hope you see your furry friends soon. maybe they need a little time to see their area was just tidied, not destroyed, to know they are still welcome. is there some food you could put out to encourage the rabbits and groundhogs to return?

glad the grocery pick-ups are going well. i hope the store has some bleach wipes for you.

today i am going to try doing something more around here than just wash the dishes … i need to regain some strength. i know it’s understandable, but it’s also kind of scary how weak i feel. i won’t overdo it, though … moving forward, not back!

sunny here right now, but i hope we get the rain predicted for tonight.

stay safe and well and have an easy day, everyone!

I still wish my parents a Happy Anniversary each year. It would’ve been 74 for them, too. I didn’t realize, but our anniversary is today also. Not quite as long, but 46 yrs isn’t bad either.

Glad to hear your seeds came up. We finished our planting yesterday…now it’s just other garden projects and maintenance. I wonder what’s happened to your rabbit population? Is it possible you have coyotes, or birds of prey? I wouldn’t think just clearing paths would harm them.

We’ve had riots for a second day here. While Madison has always had protests, I don’t understand the destruction of businesses. But, it’s kind of hard to ignore that news, at this point when it’s right in my city.

Good luck in the wipes department. To think I took them for granted for so many years. Enjoy your day…and stay safe! ;)

I think it’s the activity and the noise that has sent them on their way. Our woods is small and Don’s presence is big!

Oh my this year has been something. June first already. I watched Governor Cuomo yesterday. As usual, he makes sense in the midst of chaos. President Obama posted this morning. His words of wisdom never cease to give me hope. I have spent more time in the garden among the birds than ever these last months. Imagine my joy when a bald eagle flew over. At first I thought it must have been some kind of heron as its wingspan was enormous, however, it looked nothing like a heron! Yesterday a neighbor posted a stunning image of a bald eagle in the area. It turns out that there are two parents, two eaglets, and a juvenile nesting here in Orange County. Stay well and stay safe, Claudia! xo, Christy

Boy, isn’t it the truth how we took wipes, and disinfectant sprays, and tp all for granted just a few months ago!! Now I feel like a spy ~ looking on-line early morning and late at night. Recon moves to try and find it anywhere. And I feel like all we have done to “stop the spread” is going down the toilet with the mass rioting. I do understand and support the cause 100%+, but not the destruction. As Donnamae said, it is heartbreaking what is happening in Madison, and I imagine every follower here has stories about their own town to tell. And the idiot hides in his bunker under the WH. I remember Saddam Hussein and Hitler hiding in bunkers as well. Birds of a feather?

I have felt sad and overwhelmed during the Isolation/ Stay at Home times, but I could handle it because I felt like we were doing it for a concerted effort. All together. Now I feel that it has all been for naught and the virus is going to surge due to the massive crowds, and then what will happen? Stay home and stay safe everyone. That has so many meanings now.

Birds of a feather? Hmmmm, yes, I believe so.

Our local neighborhood website, “Nextdoor” is filled with conspiracy theories. They have shared “fliers” that have apparently been posted in areas looking to “hire (liberal) anarchists” for $40-$50 an hour. They are saying the protests are not real. All the while promoting their conservative agenda fueled by Fox News talking points. Shameful.

The destructive riots are a different thing than the peaceful protests. We have had them a few miles from our home and the locals on the ground are saying that the destructive rioters are not their neighbors. It appears white supremacists are hiding behind the legitimate protests to further their own agenda. Shameful.

I agree, Christy. Now after what the idiot-in-chief did today, I don’t know anything any longer. He is a dictator and there is no doubt about that. What he is now doing with the military police is beyond all of the abhorent things he has done in the past 3 years.

    Hi Claudia,

Re: the Clorox Wipes or similar; we have been saving the little wipes after they were used and
putting them in bleach water and using them again. (since we can’t get the others anymore). It seems to work fine, and plain bleach is easier to get, although yes, we’d rather have the other!

Thanks as ever for your beautiful pictures and wonderful writing.

As soon as I couldn’t find sani-wipes, I started cutting them in half. I was realizing that I never used the corners. Also trying to clean two things, the last thing got short shrift with a dirty cloth. Now the last one or two get a clean cloth. But still, my supply is getting low. I did find some the other day and I could buy two. I gave one to my daughter because she was running low and couldn’t find any either. I figure when I run out, I will just clean with soap. Just need to clean with what we have and then hope it is enough. The sun will kill viruses too. But I can’t drag my sinks, toilets and tubs outside, so soap it is.

I have resorted to spritzing with the 91% alcohol and wiping with a clean cloth. It is funny how that bottle that I used to get for about 1$ is now more than 4$ and like you, I am grateful to have the gardens and my home here to enjoy and no desire to venture out anywhere for pleasure. Sometimes I post pictures of my garden and blooms on Facebook and you are welcome to take a look.

We’ve been up and down temperature-wise here. First humid and hot then so cold last night the cat decided to join us and sleep along the side of my leg, which she hasn’t done since spring started. Now tomorrow it’ll be almost 90!

I’ve look for wipes too on my every other week or so jaunts to the grocery. Sometimes I get lucky, most times not. I ventured to the nursery today because I feel OK being outdoors. Was pleasantly surprised to see the majority there with masks. We live in the land of no rules here since the WI Supreme Court struck down the governor’s safe-a-home edict. But I do notice most are still being super cautious and sheltering at home in this area half an hour north of Milwaukee. Milwaukee County still has strict stay home rules in place. Kind of excited about our first big outing in a long time tomorrow to go down there to a law firm where we’ll sign our new will. My first time in a conference room setting since I retired almost two years ago.

Your photos recently of your property have been just beautiful.

    Take care.

Kay, it is like living in the wild west, isn’t it? We live about 24 miles from Madison. Dane Co still has lots of rules still in place, so the bar hoppers have all been visiting. It is nuts. I can’t even imagine what the Dells are like. Now with all of the rioting, I think we all need to stay home in order to stay safe. Let us pray Gov Earl won’t let the Military in here……. but the Repubs will just pout and call THEIR Supreme Court together, and it will be anything tRump wants again. Oh how I hate it.

It is very confusing, Chris. My biggest pleasant surprise on our field trip to downtown to the law firm today was how much work is being done on the city streets. One positive thing Milwaukee is doing by taking advantage of the fact there’s so little traffic.

That said, our oldest, who works security at a hotel down there and so has a job (yay) sent us texts last night from the hotel roof of the rally in Red Arrow Park and the long, long car parade protest – hundreds of honking cars. What a great way to social distance and still participate in a protest!

I’m up to 10 bunnies this year. It’s a good start!

Sounds like your world is pretty productive. As for wipes, a dear friend knew I’d been out and was perilously low on alcohol and found one package and gave them to me. THIS is a good friend.

Michigan has opened up, pretty much in full, with some restrictions — distance, masks, etc. (Which no one seems to pay much attention to) and still no hair, massage, etc. It’s warming up, too. My early walks have been less crowded and much more pleasant.

The world is making my heart break. All we need now are the locusts. My heart hurts so much. And like Covid, this won’t pass. In fact, Covid will be gone long before racism. But this one feels a little different. Is it too early to hope it might make SOME difference?

I’m glad NY hasn’t opened up that much. I’d much rather err on the side of caution. Cuomo is taking it very slow and, hopefully, things here will eventually be the better for it.

I hope you’re right and this one does make a difference, Jeanie. There is certainly a different feel to these protests. I’m praying it does. xo
