This morning. A gorgeous coolish day.
Also this morning:
The discovery that deer have chomped on our oldest – and biggest – hosta. Darn it! Time for my deer spray. Maybe I can save the rest of it. That big gap of dirt should not be showing.
I suppose it could be the groundhog but my money is on the deer.
We mowed like crazy yesterday, so we are tired today. But it looks lovely out there.
A scene from the porch:
The daisies that Don picked for me? Let’s just say…they stunk. Don first noticed that they smelled like manure. Every time we passed them in the kitchen, that aroma wafted our way. So I put them in a sturdy vase and found this place for them on the porch, where they’re still thriving several days later.
It’s a “take it easy” day today, though I have to wash the sheets and vacuum. By take it easy, I mean no mowing, no major work in the garden. I’ll make up a batch of deer deterrent and spray it on all the hostas. Hopefully, that will keep our little friends from dining on my plants. It’s not as if we don’t have all sorts of other green things for them to eat on this property!
Stay safe.
Happy Sunday.

Dear Daysies, you look beautiful but stay outside, please!
You’ve found the perfect place for them.
Have a nice week!

Great save for the stinky daisies — they really look like they were picked to be in that very pot, on that very spot! It’s lovely here at the lake too. Just finished some serious pine needle raking and now time for a little break to either finish Les Parisiennes or paint. Or both! Rick’s on a ride, all’s right with the world.
Enjoy your day!

Oh, to be near a lake! Enjoy, Jeanie. Stay safe!

glad those stinky-but-pretty flowers found a better spot so you can still enjoy them.
also glad if there’s something to keep the deer away from your hostas (etc.) … especially when you give them plenty of other choices.
your “take it easy” day doesn’t sound so easy, but glad you can stay indoors to avoid more allergens.
there are some chores to do around here, but i have little interest in doing them at the moment. i’ll just keep reminding myself that it feels good to get stuff done … and that i’ll rather do them now than at 8:00 at night. just want to stop by, say hej and that i hope you all have a nice afternoon and stay safe!

Oh, your poor Hosta. I sprayed my Hostas when they were first coming up to prevent the deer from snacking…but, I ran out. And where I ran out, is exactly where the deer started to munch a day or so later. I’m good now til the flowers start…then I usually have to spray them again. I’m sure your Hosta will recover…but, it’s such a shame.
Do wild daisies normally stink like that? I think you’ve found the perfect solution, however. Don’t work too hard today…enjoy this beautiful weather. I’m sure it will be short lived! ;)
Claudia says
Don picked them on the side of the road and it’s farm land, so maybe it’s related to manure? I have no idea!
Stay safe, Donna!

The other morning I opened the liv room blinds around 7AM and looked outside. It was a lovely sunny morning, and walking down the street was a young deer!! Just meandering. I grabbed my phone to take a pic because I didn’t think anyone would believe me. I snapped 3 of them. Went to look for my husband to tell him and show him picture proof. By the time we came back in the liv room, she was back and in the neighbor’s yard. We could tell she was looking for someone. She was separated from mom, I am sure. Soon she just layed down in the yard. In about 5 min she got up again and meandered down the alley. Later in the morning we saw one of the village crew guys and they said that they do see them in town once in a while if the coyotes are bothering them down by the river. We have lived here for over 30 years and have never seen that! A Walt Disney moment that morning.
Glad you have the cooler weather now, too. It is supposed to go down to 46* again overnight. Days we don’t have to use AC are good days!! Enjoy the remainder of your Sunday!
Claudia says
I hope that sweetie-pie found his/her mom! Bless those young deer.
Stay safe, Chris!

I love the look of the daisies on your porch. Your yard is so lovely. Thanks also for yesterday’s update on reading activities. I responded to a couple of comments there.
We went to in-church service this morning, 1st time since March 8. Physical distancing ( pews marked off to insure), wearing masks entire time, no hymnal use, no shaking hands, no hugs. Very different. Grandson wanted to attend to announce his upcoming 12th birthday! Small congregation, they sang happy birthday to him so he felt terrific.
Was our first outing in a group, felt good but also cautious. We will probably continue watching the online service for a while longer, don’t think we are ready for groups.

So sweet that your grandson announced his birthday!
Stay safe, Jan!

Boy, Claudia, I remember when you had your deer spray recipe on the log a few years ago. We use it and IT WORKS! The deer started on ours as soon as they began to shoot out of the ground (might have been rabbits too, we have plenty of those too). The deer also pulled my violas by the roots right out of the pot the day after I planted them this spring. Once we sprayed, they’ve left everything alone. So thank you for that.
Three days of either rain or too cold to sit and enjoy the outdoors. On the other hand, when you keep moving around instead of lounging you get a lot of weeding done so there’s that.
Take care.
Kay

I think I’ll have to spray again. There wasn’t enough to cover everything. But I did spray the hosta that was chomped on.
Weeding is on my list! Stay safe, Kay.

Caludia,
Would you be willing to share your dear repellent? We have small herds that go through my backyard and I would like to plant more things outside of our small fenced areas.
Thank you!
Claudia says
Deborah, I published the link on my cousin, Eileen’s comment (the first one on this post). Since it’s another blogger’s creation, I’m more comfortable sharing the link, rather than the recipe. It does work – at least for me. Stay safe.
