Day One Hundred Forty-Three

August 3, 2020 at 9:43 am by Claudia

We got quite a bit of rain yesterday afternoon but the thunder that came in the late evening didn’t bring any rain. However, that tropical storm is headed our way and we’re supposed to get a LOT of rain tonight and tomorrow.

Careful what you wish for…

I had to yank on Don’s leash yesterday (obviously not literally.) He took a walk in the morning and pulled some weeds in the rock garden right after that. His medication has a warning about sun exposure, but he had a hat on and it was cloudy.

Late in the day, I saw him going back out there, carrying a weeding tool and when I shouted “What are you doing?” he gestured to the rock garden. I was just about to water the porch plants and as I went outside to get the watering can, humidity that was so high that it felt like we lived in a tropical rain forest smacked me in the face. And it was very sunny. Back in the house. Knocked on the kitchen window. He looked up. I raised the window and said, “Get in the house. Now.” “Just 5 more minutes.” “Don…” “Just two more minutes.” “Now.”

He came in.

Later in the day, he complained that he didn’t feel good, so we had a talk. I told him I was taking charge and that he was allowed to take a short walk every other morning if it wasn’t sunny. No pulling weeds. No mowing. He’s still sick and he’s on heavy antibiotics. To his credit, he realized that he couldn’t do anything and everything, that it wasn’t quite as easy as he thought, and that he had to rest for the next week and a half. He agreed.

He would do the same if our positions were reversed.

I won this little framed painting on eBay. It’s for the English Cottage:

I’m not sure which room it will adorn, but I really love it. It was made in 1979 by a well-known married couple who were miniaturists. There’s a signature on the back.

I played around with furniture placement yesterday as I was waiting for the last of the stonework to dry.

I’ve always envisioned an island dividing the open space on the first floor. I was going to try to build one but I found this piece in an Etsy shop based in Milan, Italy. It has a farmhouse sink, a faucet, drawers and cupboards and the tallest cupboard could be the refrigerator, as I had always envisioned a smaller refrigerator in this space, rather like the one in Don’s studio.

Aga toward the rear (or actual front of the house), large cupboard next to it. Somehow a bit of the paint on the AGA chipped off – how, I don’t know as I had it stashed safely in a cupboard – so I did a little patch, but eventually, I’ll have to look for a paint that better matches that color.

I have a piece coming for the far wall near the sofa. And I want a chair and maybe a coffee table. And lots of books. We’ll see.

There’s so much to be done before I can even think of decorating: the windows, the floors, trim, some beams on the ceiling, the door – which doesn’t fit the frame, so I have to keep adding wood putty to try to make it fit better – then the wallpaper and wall treatments. And that’s just for this room!

That wicker table will most likely go upstairs in the bedroom. But I love seeing it, so it’s in the shot.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Oh My! I am so glad Don listened to you! Men can be like that. Women will take the time to recover because they know once they get back on their feet, there is no going back. Everyone depends on them for jobs around the house. Men head out early because they are just tired of being sick and think working will make them feel better. Wrong-o. He is such a sweetie! I want him to feel better soon, but don’t want him to rush it. You take it easy too but don’t try to pick up the slack either. I love the doll house! I have an old one of my daughter’s sitting downstairs. I didn’t like the way she painted it, so it has just sat—for 25 years. Time for me to get squatting rights! You two take care of yourselves.

men and their health! they’re stubborn. sometimes to the detriment of their life.
    I’m glad you took charge.
with my one heart problems there are triggers I have to try to avoid… the first being hunidity
and excessive HEAT. and if you don’t pay attention… your body will just smack you DOWN.
and it’s harder each time to get back. so I am watchful.
men are used to being the STRONG and in charge one! and Lyme disease is not to be taken lightly.
and your cottage finds and decor are so pretty! life is good. xoxo

No, it isn’t and we don’t take it lightly. We’ve been through it before. He was just restless but he’s been real good today.

      Thanks, Tammy! Stay safe.

Oh, those men!! It is so hard to get them to understand that at some point they might need to slow down a bit ~ even just for a short period of time. And it is for their own good, for goodness sake!!

It is actually kind of “cold” here this morning. Well, that is a stretch, but compared to the 80’s and 90’s, the low 50’s we have experienced all morning have been a bit chilly! The sun has finally come out, so we may hit 70* today!! Crazy.

I truly love that little wicker table. I want one for me!! Same color. So pretty. Hope you get some rain you need~ just not too much. Have a peaceful day.

It’s unbelievably humid here today and I mowed this morning.

We’re going to get tropical storm rain, I fear.

      Stay safe, Chris.

Every now and then we all need a “keeper.” I’m glad Don has you. (Men are especially tough, I must say. They don’t lay low well.)

The doll house is wonderful and that painting is exquisite. I love the Aga and that cabinet. It’s all terrific.

Batten the hatches. I read that New England/cost may get the brunt of the tropical storm. I hope that’s wrong!

Yes. We can’t really do anything other than stay in. We have wind and rain warnings. We’ll see how it goes.

      Thanks, Jeanie.

      Stay safe.

I’m glad you staged a mini- intervention for Don, Claudia! Yes, I know he’d do the same for you! Love seeing your cottage design process! I’d love to jump into miniatures but know better than to add another obsession to my life and also give less time to my other hobbies. I’ll just enjoy vicariously through you!

Have a good week and Stay Safe! Hope the tropical storm doesn’t cause too much damage. !

Thank you Don for listening to Claudia on this one. My husband is very hard to slow down and I always worry he will do too much. He is not as reasonable as Don. You don’t want to. mess around with your immune system, etc., these days. Rest and relax and heal. I love the painting you won!! It’s another real art piece. Playing around with furniture is lots of fun. That sofa is truly a standout. I have a few more pieces of my deco but no place to put them! Lol This is what happens when you put the cart before the horse: lesson for me, don’t buy furniture until you have a house! Stay safe and have some fun. XO

Rain. We didn’t get any. It’s like the cold front came in dry around here. And, like Chris said,,,it’s chilly here. Hope you don’t get too much rain over the next few days from that tropical storm.

There’s not much more to say about men that hasn’t already been said, by you or the other commenters. Glad you got Don to listen to you, finally.

    Enjoy the rain…stay safe! ;)

He’s been very good today Donna.

The rain that’s coming our way will be accompanied by high winds. Not the kind of rain I was hoping for!

      Stay safe.

Claudia, it seems like our guys become little boys when they are sick or injured. We have to assume the “mom” role for their own good at times. I’m sure your Don is grateful for your gentle admonishments to slow down, take it easy, rest. Gotta love them.

I just felt a wee light go on inside of me to see the interior of the cottage and then the new framed painting for it. Your amazing doll-house creations bring me joy, Claudia. I need those little moments of joyful sparks!

So glad you got rain. Send some to me. SoCalif is parched, dry and hot.

You’re lucky you can get anywhere with Don when it comes to being sick. I get nowhere with my husband. He’s a wonderful person but an awful patient. Just.won’t.listen. Hoping for Don to get well soon!

Well, I was really, really FIRM with him.

We, of course, will now get more rain that we ever wanted with the tropical storm that is going to hit us today.

      Stay safe, Vicki.

glad the patient listened to the doctor. :)

hope don gets better soon and you stay well. take good care of yourself, like you do of don.

good luck with the rain and wind said to be coming your way.

hooray for ebay wins! and what lovely pieces you have for the english cottage dollhouse! i have always especially loved/wanted that style of round wicker table. and that new little painting … how do they make such details so tiny?!? i like the layout and hearing your plans for what already looks great to me.

here? glad to be home … will leave it at that. but! it was five months ago today that i had a minimal haircut … way too long with my very short pixie haircut, “fuzzy little duckling” hair and not much of it … so i cut my own hair. :o not just the tips of bangs or the other hair around my face … all of it (though i probably missed a few little strands here and there). i am rather pleased with it, if i do say so myself. :)

now, it’s time to get some things done around here.

hope you are having a good night and stay safe in every way.

LOL! I ordered a room box. I’ve never built anything in my life, so we’ll see how I can manage right angles with wood glue. Hope you and Don got thru the storm with no damage. More rain coming for us today. Wild summer, but what else is new for 2020? Thank you for your encouragement.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
