Day Sixty-Four

May 16, 2020 at 9:30 am by Claudia

All they needed were a couple of days of warmth and sunshine. They’re late this year, but thank goodness, they’re here.

In the “What next?” category, we had a tornado warning last night and it was for our little corner of the Hudson Valley. We saw it flash on the television screen, so we got up, grabbed a flashlight and Don went outside and opened the cellar door just in case. Thankfully, nothing happened. We had a tornado watch for the rest of the evening. Yesterday’s temperature reached 83 and it was very, very humid, so I’m not surprised that we had severe thunderstorms all over the Hudson Valley, Connecticut, and western Massachusetts.

It’s all rather crazy: two weeks ago, the temperature reached 80 degrees, within a few days we were dealing with several days of frost and freeze warnings, then within a day of the cold leaving, we were in the eighties with a tornado warning.

As I said to Don, “What’s next? Locusts?”

Today is lovely. At the moment, the sun is shining. Don is going to work on some projects outside. I am going to plant in the big garden bed. Later, we have to drive to the grocery store for a pick up and then we’ll be back here disinfecting everything.

It’s so green and lush out there right now!

By the way, it pains me to write this, but I think Henry is no longer with us. We’ve not seen him and the main entrance he uses to go under the shed is full of leaves that have never been disturbed. I hope and pray I am wrong, but I’m already mourning him. Unlike other summers, I haven’t seen a groundhog near my garden bed (crossing fingers that I don’t have to put up fencing.) Henry never disturbed the bed, but other little scamps did. I’m also not seeing any bunnies.

If you have indeed left us, Henry, we thank you for your company all these years. You are a part of our family forever.

Happy Saturday.

I chuckled about the locust comment…sorry but couldn’t help it. You always seem to add a moment of humor…in the midst of this tragedy…I saw that storms are headed to Florida-family there…the grandsons are used to evacuating…so cute…little ones…we are having the same weather…hot…cold…hot…back and forth-they say this is Indiana…I have lived here a couple of years but have visited family 25 years…have good day…enjoy flowers, yard, puzzle, reading…I wondered…do you or Don paint? You are both so artistic…

No, neither of us paint. My dad was the painter in the family! Stay safe, Brenda.

    Oh. Henry. Time marches on.

Tornado; gracious. I think I had forgotten you had some sort of shelter in the form of a cellar. Makes sense a vintage home would have one.

You have had a really wild time with weather!

Our cellar has an outside entrance (like in The Wizard of Oz). It’s not a place I would want to spend more than 10 minutes, however! Stay safe, Vicki.

Henry will be missed—by you, and by us. He gave us, the blog-readers, many a smile. 💔

We also saw that tornado warning in your area. Yikes! (Mr. Wizard is keeping close tabs on upstate NY weather, as we get nearer to Blast Off and head your way.)

I’m memory-smelling that gorgeous lilac. Hoping we arrive in time to sniff ours in real time.

Yes, my heart is breaking. I knew it was only a matter of time as he’s been here since we arrived (and probably before that) and he was old.

The tornado warning came out of Tillson and New Paltz, our neighbors just down the road. We saw a photo taken by a local and that was a funnel cloud – at least developing into one. Very scary.

      Stay safe, Shanna.

Oh, I’m so sorry about Henry. They become part of our lives, don’t they, these wild creatures that aren’t so wild…

    Yes, locusts. Or murder bees.

I’m off to pick up my very first grocery order. It’s just a small one from a small general store that gets local/regional meat not processed in Covid plants, really fresh local veggies, wine, local cheese. It’s more than I’d usually spend but I want to see this small store survive. I call when I get there, pop the trunk and they put it in. Fingers are crossed for an easy hand-off!

Have a wonderful weekend, Claudia. I hope the tornadoes are over for a bit.

We really loved Henry. I’m very sad.

Today was beautiful, a lovely day following a rather crazy one. Stay safe, Jeanie.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear about Henry…he was one of the gang, wasn’t he. Funny how we become attached to animals that way…they endear their way into our hearts.

It’s a little windy here today. Rain comes in tonite, some of which will be quite heavy, and it’s sticking around til Monday sometime. I don’t plan on doing much planting today…don’t want my plants to get drenched.

Locusts, murder hornets….makes you wonder what is coming next, doesn’t it? In the mean time…enjoy your day. And…stay safe! ;)

We had only a little bit of rain last night. Glad the tornado did not materialize. Enjoy your gardening.

So am I! We saw photos from the neighboring town later in the morning (right by the nursery I go to) and that was a funnel cloud. Stay safe, Marilyn.

Ooooh, that color purple! One of the blessings I will not take for-granted!

Thank you for the care you have shown to Henry over the last few years, I have enjoyed him too!

He was here when we moved in nearly 15 years ago. I’m sure he was here for several years before we entered the picture. We really loved him – a lot. Thanks, Kelly. Stay safe.

oh, i am sad to hear that about henry.
i know you and don miss him. thank you both for loving henry for so many years and for respecting him and all nature and not trying to force him off your property. i hope you see his family and friends as well as the bunnies soon.

scary about the funnel cloud. glad you were safe and have the cellar if needed … and i hope you never have to use it!

when things get better (and they will), i hope you consider selling your photographs as don does … they are all beautiful! while there are many others i’d also choose, that top photo of the lilacs is perfect … i can almost smell them … and that depth of field is incredible! no pressure intended.

edbd here. i was “out” in the world for almost eight hours trying to find food and other necessities for family members and then delivering it all. meant going to seven way-too-crowded stores, but i would do anything for my family! best parts of my days are seeing and talking with my family and (someday) being in the same place forever. right now i am enjoying the second best part of my days … being home, showered (always a big relief), dinner is done and i am under the covers (it’s chilly in here) to stop by mhc, say hej and see how you all are doing. i hope and pray that you, don and everyone else who gathers here are safe, well and having as good a day as possible during this tough time.

    stay safe!

Glad you’re back home and safely ensconced in your apartment, Kathy. You did a lot today – eight hours is about six more than I can bear during this crisis. Bravo to you! Stay safe.

It was another windy day here today. We worked outside all day. I am exhausted. Just sat down a bit ago and saw the graduation “special” is on. I am waiting to hear President Obama speak. Just the thougth of a few minutes of actual intelligent words seems beyond amazing to me right now. I miss intelligence.

Losing Henry comes at a difficult time. I had no idea critters lived that long! I think it was knowing he had a safe home and was loved that gave him extra years. The lilacs!!! Gorgeous. And the weather!!! We were on the outskirts of the tornado warnings but it’s an unpleasant feeling to see the warnings on the TV as they move thru. And I do believe there was/is a plague of locusts in some African country. I keep watching for the 4 Housemen when we need the 3 Musketeers. Stay safe and thank you for blessing the world.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
