Lilac buds.
Periwinkle in the woods.
Just beyond the lilac side of our front lawn are the remnants of two old stone foundations.
This one is near the road.
And this one is behind it.
They’re separate buildings. I can’t be sure what they were used for, but I suspect they were outbuildings of some kind. We wondered for a while whether they were actually on our property, but they are. We found the property markers last spring. The foundation that borders the road is just inside the property line. It’s rather wild in this area, lots of fallen trees and the rusty remains of barbed wire (on the edge of the property) and there’s also a very rusted enclosure where some sort of animal was kept – most likely, chickens. That’s a mess, and it would have to be removed by professionals. We’ve just left it as is. But it’s evidence of life lived long ago on this just-under-two-acres where we live. Our house was built in 1891, but these buildings seem older.
On to other things: For the past two Sundays, the email version of my post hasn’t gone out. Last Monday, it went out, attached to Monday’s post. Who knows why? When I realize that it hasn’t gone out, I usually do what they call a ‘ping’ to update the feed. Anyway, that’s all I can do. I really have no control over it and I’m not going to pay for another service. So, as always, if you don’t get the email, come directly to the blog.
It’s another rainy day today and I have to coach my friend again, so I’ll be zooming with Bombay. Rather exotic! When I coached him the other day, I realized it was the first time I had worked professionally in over a year. It was awfully nice to rediscover that I can be of service and I’m good at what I do. Awfully nice.
Stay safe.
Happy Monday.

If only those foundations could tell you their story.
It might be interesting to research the history of your house or previous owners if that’s even possible.

Claudia says
We’ve thought of it, but we never get around to it!
Stay safe, Marilyn.

Yes, I was wondering if there is an old survey in the records somewhere that shows your land in even earlier times. But then, sometimes it is better to be able to use your own imagination to guess what the foundations or walls were for!
Enjoy your Spring blooms!
Claudia says
I like the idea of imagining who lived here, Ellen!
Stay safe.

I love this time of year…there seems to be something new popping up or sprouting up every day. I find it thrilling.
I think it would be fun to search the history of your property, if you could even find it. Since you said those foundations and those building remnants looked older, I was wondering if your home was the second home built on the property?
We had our first non-family guests on Saturday. It was so good to see our best friends. We havenβt seen them since late October. We are all fully vaccinated, so felt very comfortable. Nice day here…but cooler this week. Good week to clean up the gardens. Stay safe! ;)

It’s cooler here today and rainy. Nighttime temps going down to the high 30s. Brrrr!
Thanks so much, Donna
Stay safe!

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could expand your zoom coaching in the future. So many sectors are reimagining how to go about their business, this may be an opportunity for you to do the same. A hybrid of travel and zoom is an interesting concept.
Enjoy every minute of this beautiful spring.

It would be lovely. Right now, no one has work, so no one need coaching. My friend is the exception! But I’d be completely open to it, Anne.
Stay safe!

That IS exotic, zooming with Bombay! And what a wonderful feeling, that reaffirmation that what you do, you do well — and can still do it even after a hiatus.
I find your property fascinating with the foundation walls and chicken structure — and just the age of your home. It’s fascinating and wonderful to think of life back then — maybe not always a great life, but an interesting one!
Claudia says
Very interesting. It gets so overgrown in that area once everything fills in that I wanted to grab some photos while I could!
Stay safe, Jeanie.

Thatβs the beautiful thing about older properties
When we sold our house in the UK we briefly had sight of the deeds, from1834 with revisions from 1891. Turns out our little cottage had once been a public house, and the new owners have reestablished its original name – The Beer House.
Not sure if there is a similar tradition in the US to have names and not numbers for older properties.
Lovely post as always Claudia x

Siobhan, I have always loved the way people have names for their homes. It isn’t common here, that I know of, at least. But I think it is just lovely!!!!
Claudia says
No, we use addresses here, Siobhan, but I’d much rather use a house name! I love that tradition.

Be intriguing to l ow who lived there and who built it
I assume the name of the blog is the name of your cottage
Love the fact that it is over 100 years old
I was born in the back bedroom of family home on a little street in a little town in a little state

Miss it

Be safe working outside and rest

Yes, but that’s the name we gave it. Not it’s official name on any deed.
Stay safe, Brenda!

I love hearing the stories of older homes. It is fun to take drives way out in the countryside and see large groupings of lilac bushes and flocks in the middle of seemingly nowhere. It always turns out if you ask someone, it is where some people originally settled or years ago there was an old homestead.
Those foundations on your property are fascinating!! Hope you had a good day! Take care.
Claudia says
Yes. We have forsythia in the woods, which we thought was on someone else’s property but is actually on ours – it’s aboout 20 feet behind those foundations.
Stay safe, Chris!

i’m happy that signs of spring are popping up all over for you and that you can get outdoors, work in the garden. and that those old foundations are on your side of the property line. :)
glad, too, that you have some coaching work and hope it grows and grows for you, don, everyone. also really like hearing you (anyone) own your (their) talent. :)

I so hope that more work becomes available for my colleagues in the performing arts. We all desperately need and want to work and we’ve been denied that opportunity for too long.
Stay safe, Kathy.
