Day Three Hundred Sixty-Seven

March 15, 2021 at 10:31 am by Claudia

Wind, wind, wind. It has finally stopped, leaving us with much colder temperatures. It’s 24 degrees as I write this and the high will be 36. The same holds true for tomorrow and then it will start to get warmer. But it’s sunny!

It’s the Ides of March today.

A word about A Chelsea Concerto, which I finished yesterday. If you’re at all interested in WWII history, I strongly recommend this book. It’s beautifully written, helped by the artist author’s attention to detail. It’s also heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. It was originally published in 1959, the same year that the author died from cancer – far too young. It’s been out of print for years, and Dean Street Press just reissued it last month. That’s how new this copy is. I spent a lot of time talking to Don about it and it lingered with me all day yesterday and into today. This isn’t a review – I just recommend it highly. It’s important to remember.

I started a new puzzle yesterday, this one a New Yorker  cover from the 30s depicting a seaside village. Much brighter colors!

More egg cups. Among them, my other Snow White (I have two). Some of my favorites are here: bunnies holding up egg cups, living in egg cups, painting egg cups. A bear pulling an egg cup. Little dogs and little boys. Chicks. Bluebirds from Germany. Lustre ware. Groundhogs in the Alps. Funny faces and a wooden girl wearing a knit cap.

And my tiny silver egg cup from Paris. I’ve since polished it because it was tarnished. The blue and white cup at the top is ironstone and very old. And the egg next to it was a gift from my mom, who, as soon as she learned I was collecting them, enthusiastically looked for egg cups wherever she went. I miss her.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

I love seeing all your egg cups. I don’t ever recall using an egg cup growing up. I don’t think my parents had any. It makes me think of a more proper time when women wore white gloves and hats to church.
Enjoy the sun and stay safe.

I used one. But they are definitely used more in Canada and Europe.

      Stay safe, Marilyn.

glad you have sunshine now and warmer weather ahead!

    and another puzzle!

    and a new book!

and the egg cups! i love seeing what people collect and how they display those things and look forward to your springtime egg cups parade (that cupboard is perfect)! with all due respect to you and your choices, i do have some favorites. :) in this photo it’s the blue and white egg cup in the top row, the bunny next to snow white on the bottom row, the painter bunny and the orange cup with bunny on the left side of the third row. maybe it’s the ears and the sweet face, but that orange-cup bunny makes me think of your sweet scout. :)

we had wet, heavy snow overnight. it stuck to the grass; the streets and sidewalks are a slushy mess. ugh. i am ready for spring!

hope you, don and everyone else are having a good day. i am ready to visit with my family (though still socially distanced), then go home and sew.

There’s another egg cup which looks even more like Scout. I’ll point it out to you when I post it.

      Stay safe, Kathy!

I was disappointed to find that my local library has no copies of A Chelsea Concerto. I have put in a request with them so they will either find it at another library or buy a copy. I love the service that my library gives to its patrons! So I hope to get a copy sooner or later as it sounds like a great book. Thanks so much, Claudia!

We have a winter weather adv here, but nothing is falling yet. Our friends in Denver had a crazy storm with so much snow!! So glad our forecast is only for 2-4 inches. We can deal with that.

We had no side effect from the 2nd shot (Moderna) that we had on Friday. I had a headache on Fri night but took a Tylenol and it was fine. On Sat hubs felt achy when he woke up, took some Ibuprofen, and was out on a long walk with the dog within an hour or so. We consider ourselves lucky, indeed.

Hope you are having a good day. Sunshine does help, no matter what the temp is, I think. Take care!

Love the egg cups and looking forward to the puzzle! I think I must add Chelsea Concerto to my list. It’s a period I’m fascinated with and have studied a great deal and your recommendation is indeed one to hold close. Thanks for that!

    Have a lovely, sunny day!

Thanks for the book recommendation; my copy is arriving Wednesday. I just finished watching the series Resistance on PBS, it is set at the end of WWII in France.

dear Claudia — love seeing your egg cup collection, such variety, beauty — I even look at them when/if they are in background of pixs of inside your home. I totally understand how we miss our moms — mine has been gone since 1977 and just about everyday of each of those years, I think of questions/comments to ask/tell her. I think in all my years, I have built a good relationship w/my children and now w/those beloved gchildren — sort of think the grands will defend/protect me till my last days. they are so special. glad you have sun — very gloomy here, rain w/cold wind, not fun. pls stay healthy and safe.

It just started to snow here…2-4 inches. Not too bad, but I’ve had enough. There was an absolutely gorgeous sunrise this morning…very red sky. But, you had to be quick to capture it before the clouds rolled in.

Enjoy your puzzle…and your book. Stay safe! ;)

My first husband, who was from Cologne, introduced me to egg cups and napkin rings. I never knew this (you all probably do) that each of his family members had their own individual napkin ring, and they used them at each meal for about a week, saving on laundry and paper. For many years, I kept a variety of cloth napkins and a small collection of napkin rings. I no longer live in an environment where egg cups and napkin rings are useful, but I love the practice. The crack of the spoon on the shell is kind of kind like the satisfying crack when one breaks into a creme brulle (sp?).

I have a silver napkin ring that has Claudia engraved on it – an antique that was found by a friend of mine in Canada. I treasure it!

      Stay safe, Nora.

I ordered Chelsea Concerto because of your mention of it. Like you, I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s when the WWll was still fresh in people’s minds. My parents spoke often about the way things were during the war. So many of the movies on TV were of the war era so I feel so connected to stories from that era. I haven’t come across an entire book about the Blitz experience. My mother in law was a war bride from Palermo Sicily and she spoke only once about the terror she experienced during the air raids over Palermo. I look forward to reading this book and learning more. Thanks for your recommendation.

I can’t imagine how horrific it would be to experience those air raids, Carolyn Marie.

      Enjoy the book.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
