It’s cold, but beautifully sunny. I’ll take it. Don has gone off to recycle and I’m writing this post now so that I can share a second cup of coffee with him when he comes back. We got our groceries yesterday and everything has been cleaned and put away, and after the recycling, we should be done with going-out-in-public chores.
I’m deeply saddened by the passing of the great Christopher Plummer. I’ve been a fan since I first saw The Sound of Music as a young girl. So many people know him from that and his excellent film work. But he was first and foremost a theater actor and he returned to the theater throughout his life. Rest in Peace. Thank you.
We’ve lost four greats, all in their nineties, during the past two weeks: Cloris Leachman, Cicely Tyson, Hal Holbrook, and Christopher Plummer. Each of them was astounding, brilliant, and never-to-be replaced. And all of them started out in theater and returned to the stage repeatedly. What an incalculable loss for the world. I can barely take it in. The contributions they made to the Arts can never be quantified. When I contemplate a world without these extraordinary artists, I am left bereft. Bless them all.
Puzzle finished.
Such a lot of fun!
Some closeups of favorite titles/artwork:
Madeline. And Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel.
Babar. Curious George. Ferdinand. All beloved books read over and over.
Eloise. Charlotte’s Web. Alice. Tom Sawyer. Black Beauty. Make Way for Ducklings.
Olivia – a new series that I am enchanted by.
I’m deeply into Winter Solstice. I am struck by the realization that, like the citizens of Three Pines, I want to hang out with these good people. They have become friends. I will be sad to leave them when I finish the book; you know, that feeling of wanting to slow up the reading process because you know you’ll be finished all too soon. And then they’ll be gone.
Stay safe.
Happy Saturday.

I’m almost half way through Winter Solstice and I’m loving it too. So descriptive!
I’m taking my time enjoying the read. Enjoy the sunshine.
Debbie
Claudia says
Yes, take your time. I’m already in a slight panic about finishing it!
Stay safe, Debbie.

agree … sad losses in the arts and for their families and so many in just one week. cloris leachman was born here and for a time i knew two members of her family … a niece was in my class at high school and went to my church and a nephew used to come into the coffee shop i worked at up to eleven years ago and we’d have some nice chats. condolences to all their families, friends and fans.
great puzzle with so many incredible books! i see some favorites of my brother, sister, our parents and me and those memories are treasures, a wonderful way to start the day. and little olive… whenever i see those books, i mentally congratulate the illustrator … olive’s little expressions are just perfect! also, this is inspiration as i work on my own children’s books. thank you.
glad your out-in-public tasks are done. hopefully you can just stay warm indoors and take it easy, do what you want.
did some grocery shopping last night, will get the rest today and deliver them, have a nice (but socially-distanced) visit. will then take it easy, too.
happy saturday and stay safe!

Don sublet her sister’s apartment in Manhattan many years ago. Her name was Claiborne Cary and she was an actress and cabaret singer.
I agree about the Olivia illustrations!
Stay safe, Kathy.

At least we can enjoy those actors again and again in the movies they made, thank goodness. They certainly did live full, productive lives! I can’t wait to read Cicely Tyson’s new book – I have it on hold at my library.
That puzzle looks awesome – so many old favorites! Babar was a special favorite of my kids and I have a little Babar figure on my fireplace shelf.
Stay safe and warm!
Claudia says
I loved Babar!
Stay safe, Ellen.

I have been sad to see so many of our great artists passing away but in their 90’s they have had a good life and given much. As my Mom is now in her 90’s I am thankful for each and every day with her. Love the puzzle, so many great books I read to my children and grandchildren. Enjoy your day. I’m having a bit of a hard time today as it’s 5 years since my Charlie Kitty left me. He is in my heart forever but times like today are so hard. I know you know. I always think of you and Don at this time and how our shared grief somehow helped in many way. Hugs.
Claudia says
They have lived long lives, but somehow that doesn’t comfort me. My dad lived to be in his nineties, but I wanted him to live even longer.
I’m thinking of you today, Linda. It seems impossible that our babies have been gone 5 years. I remember well how we helped each other through that painful time. Sending you a big hug. xo
Stay safe.

I have a feeling that this year will bring the departure of many we have loved in that generation before us. If not by Covid, simply because they are very old. Christiopher pPlummer was a hard hit for me — I’m the same, in his camp since Sound of Music. Such a gifted actor.
Cold and sunny. My shovel people came yesterday but we got a bit more last night so my turn! The day got turned around when my IT person who was going to take the computer canceled. I was in the process of making her a birthday cake so Rick gets dessert. That and a hearty stew tonight and we should be pretty cozy.
Have a wonderful day.
Claudia says
Rick lucked out!
Stay safe, Jeanie.
Kay+Nickel says
That does look like a fun puzzle. I will have to look for one and a copy of Winter Solstice.
Yes so sad to lose those wonderful actors. Thankfully they lived long lives.
Claudia says
They did. However, we’re losing a generation that is irreplaceable.
Stay safe, Kay.

Love this puzzle. You work quickly. I am purging again. 31 moves…I am such a minimalist anyway that if I don’t use it, at this age, I don’t want it. Haven’t always been as such but I don’t do well with clutter. Prayers for safety and for getting vaccine soon to both of you.
Claudia says
Thank you, Brenda.
I always purge when I move.
Stay safe!

Claudia, last night my husband and I were watching PBS NEWSHOUR and they had a segment on the closure of Broadway and its effect on the economy. February 5, 2021

I am also sad by the loss of these four great actors. They each were such a part of my life.
Claudia says
Thanks, Lottie. I probably won’t watch it as it will be too depressing.
Stay safe!

I have felt the same thing over the past several days. So many great actors leaving us. As someone said, we can revisit them through their movies, and that is a good thing. I kind of feel the same way about Winter Solstice (and several more books). I re-read them so I can visit with them again and again. I am so happy to hear you love the book. I never wanted it to end, either.
The puzzle is wonderful! At my Son & DIL’s baby shower last year, they requested instead of cards, that people bring a favorite children’s book for the baby. It is wonderful to see soooo many of the titles they received in your puzzle. So many wonderful books and hours of reading she has ahead! Nice when errands are completed. Hubs had to go into Madison this AM to take care of some things for his elderly sister, so we put together a few things we needed from Kohl’s and Target, and he did Curbside pickups. I truly love having that option. So very easy. And safe!!
Hope the rest of your day is a good one. Take care.
Claudia says
Yes, we’ve done curbside pickups at Lowe’s. Target delivers and does it within two days, which is great.
Love that shower idea. What a neat way to amass a library of books for the baby!
Stay safe, Chris.

For Val Day I bought her a new Golden Book….. The Little Golden Book about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. ♡
Claudia says
Yay!
Donnamae says
We have lost too many great actors lately. Thank goodness, we can see appreciate their talents in movies…and reruns, so they will never truly be lost.
I think I’m going to have to order Winter Solstice. The way you all are talking, I would love to hang out with some new friends. Stay safe! ;)
Claudia says
You’ll like it, Donna.

Ferdinand, my absolute favorite as a young child and Make Way for Ducklings……I love books!
I have all of the Olivia books, for my grandchildren. They are great!
I must’ve missed it, but I was wondering what the name of this book puzzle is. I would love to
get it. Thanks for sharing your puzzles, Claudia. It is so fun to see them!
Claudia says
Its a puzzle about children’s bedtime stories. They were offered several years ago at Barnes and Noble. I don’t know if they offer them anymore.
Stay safe, Susan!
Regula says
Like I’ve told you. Wouldn’t it be nice to meet up in Scotland? ;-) There are some favourites reads in your puzzle, too. Ferdinand, a story of my childhood. Have a nice Sunday! Regula
Claudia says
Love Scotland!
I love Ferdinand and remember that book fondly.
Stay safe, Regula!
