I’d say 20 – 24 inches.
It never stopped. It snowed constantly during the day and all night long. It’s still snowing. This was one of the more massive storms I’ve seen. And we’re getting more snow on Sunday.
Don just went outside to start up the snow blower. I’m encouraging him to take breaks. We don’t have to be anywhere.
I shot this through the front window this morning:
I’m calling it Ghost Furniture.
It got windy in the evening and throughout the night, so there’s lots of drifting.
February promises to be…interesting.
While that was going on, I fixed my wallpaper mistakes by adding this:
Since I have beams and supports downstairs, I figured I could get away with this in the bathroom. It is a very old English Cottage, after all. In the future, I will NOT wallpaper these sloped walls. I should have stuck to what I did in the bedroom but I couldn’t make up my mind what color to paint the wall, so I went with this.
Now for the floors and then the windows and trim.
A word about Hal Holbrook who passed away on January 23rd. His death was just announced today.
I knew Hal and I was blessed to have known him. When I first moved to San Diego to teach in the MFA program at the Old Globe/University of San Diego, Hal was performing in King Lear, as, of course, Lear. He was brilliant. His daughter, Eve, was a second year student in the acting program, so I became her teacher. Because Hal had a connection to the Globe and to the MFA program, he would visit Eve from time to time. That first fall, he came to watch a dress rehearsal of a show we were doing in the MFA program. I walked into the performance space and there was Hal, sitting in the last row. It was just Hal and me in that room and it was the first time I met him. We got to chatting. Hal was the rare person who was focused completely on whoever he was talking to. I felt that throughout our entire conversation. He wanted to know all about me, where was I from, what was my background, did I like San Diego, everything. We spoke about King Lear and he mentioned he’d like to try that role again when he was 80. We talked about Eve. We talked about Mark Twain.
He was enormously talented, but he was even more kind and compassionate and good. A few months later, we went to see him in Mark Twain Tonight and met with him backstage. I will never forget that performance, nor his graciousness to all of us. I saw him several times during that first school year. Every meeting was a blessing.
Don had a similar experience during the summer before I met him. Don was performing in Morning’s at Seven (the show I saw him in before I met him) and Hal came backstage to Don’s dressing room, grabbed his hands and told him how great he was in the role. Again, focusing entirely on Don. Don has said he’ll never forget that experience.
Rest in Peace, dear Hal. Thank you.
Stay safe.
Happy Tuesday.

I’ve had a crush on Hal Holbrook since I first saw him in “The Awakening Land.” How lucky you are to have known him.

Your snow pictures are beautiful! I know that’s easy for me to say because I don’t have to live through it. Whenever I see new fallen snow I always want to make a snow angel. I think I’m just a kid at heart that never wants to grow up!
Enjoy the beauty and stay safe and warm.

Thank you for your beautiful words about Hal Holbrook. My late husband and I had an LP of Mark Twain Tonight that we practically worn out! I did see him in live performances of Mark Twain on two occasions and am grateful. Rest in peace, indeed.

I loved Hal Holbrook, such a talented man. He always seemed like a nice guy, and your experiences confirm that. A full life, may he rest in peace.
I’m envious of your snow. We need one of those here in Colorado. It’s so dry.
Enjoy the coziness of your house!

Your snow pictures are beautiful. We had an appointment to get our first vaccine shot yesterday morning at 8:00. It was an hour and a half away from us and we had snow, rain, and ice here over the weekend. When we got up yesterday morning, it was snowing again and very windy but we wanted to get that shot if we could possibly get up there. We left here at 6:00 A.M. and it took us nearly two hours driving on icy, snow covered and drifting roads but thankfully we made it. We did not have nearly as much snow as you though! I expect we would have had to reschedule our appointment if we did.
We were able to see Hal Holbrook on stage doing Mark Twain Tonight . It was just wonderful and we still talk about it. We never met him but I always imagined that he would be a very nice man.
I like your wallpaper too. I am hoping to be able to get some of the things I will need to start on the Beacon Hill soon. We are waiting until we feel a little safer about going into stores. So far we have only gone to the grocery store a few times and to the doctor’s office a few times. Other than that, we’ve been right here on the farm.
I hope you can enjoy that snow, stay warm and stay safe!!

Oh my goodness that is some snow! Love the photos but the shoveling, not so much. Just take care Don and don’t overdo!!
I loved Hal Holbrook. He had such a way about him and I often thought I bet he is an awesome person! Good to hear from you that he was. So talented and able to touch my emotions with his voice and face and body language! He will be missed. Hugs!

So nice to know when our instincts are right ~ that someone we think would be a good and kind person actually is!! What great memories.
Oh, that snow. I, too, hope Don will take his time. As you said, there is nowhere to go, so no need to rush. We have 30’s today and it is sunny, and supposed to be the same tomorrow. Then more snow on Thurs following with a 3-4 day Arctic blast. Such fun ahead! But, again, nowhere to go, so no need to worry. I think I hate the idea of the predicted -35* wind chill temps more than the 3-5 inches of snow. The dog is going to be heartbroken that she won’t get her 2-3 daily walks she is so accustomed to taking when the temps drop and are that brutal.
Hope the day is going well, and that some hot coffee / chocolate breaks are being enjoyed. Take care.

I’m so sorry about the loss of another friend. This year has been full of losses, not just from the pandemic. It’s as if people who have hung in there for years just sort of gave out. Love the dollhouse bathroom. Can’t imagine papering that slanted wall, but it does look pretty. Thought of you last night as the snow was still falling here–a total of 14″ at our place. The plow guys did a great job on our driveway, but they don’t shovel out the garage doors, and neither one of us is in shape to do that, so we are still housebound until tomorrow. No where to go, but I still am uncomfortable with the trapped feeling. For 20 years I loved the snow. Now I just wonder why I ever left California. You and Don stay safe!

Wow! I am so glad that storm went south of us.
I think your dollhouse wall solution looks fine. I’m not sure I have the patience you do.
It is bright and sunny here in Mich. today. I’m sure the groundhog saw his shadow so 6 more weeks of winter.
Stay safe

The snow. As soon as I saw your porch I thought of Miss Havisham. It’s beautiful in its own, odd, spooky way.
I’ve always admired Hal Holbrook’s work. You were truly a fortunate woman to have had the opportunity not only to see him perform but to share a bit of time with him. I’ve met a few people who have that gift of wanting to know all about you, giving all their attention. You never forget that experience.
Stay cozy!

Did not know that Hal Holbrook had passed away until your post. From your thoughts about him, he seemed like a special person. It seems that recently alot of actors/actresses have passed away.
Living in a certain part of northern Calif. we don’t see snow except maybe once every 5 years. (and then it is a big, big deal over an inch or two. Funny!)

“ghost furniture” … perfect. and it looks beautiful in an almost-eerie way.
close to two feet of snow? not perfect. beautiful, though.
hope you and don take it easy. even using a snowblower, that much snow (plus wind and cold temperatures) is no joke.
beautiful words about hal holbrook. glad you had those times, visits. my sister and i saw him in “death of a salesman” in the early 1990s. just heard on national news about his passing … said he was married to dixie carter of “designing women” (always liked that show). bet they’d have been fun to sit with at a dinner party!
dollhouse looks great. love the coziness that wallpaper can bring to a room and your choice is beautiful.
hope you are having a nice, warm night.
stay safe!

I was very sorry to hear of Hal Holbrook’s passing. It was nice to read of your memories involving him, though. I always had a feeling he was a nice man in real life.
That’s a lot of snow! Hope Don took it easy…lots of breaks. Stay safe! ;)
