We have snow coming later today, somewhere from 2-4-6 inches, depending on the individual forecast. It starts during the day. We’re looking forward to watching it fall. (The last snowfall occurred during the night.)
Drum roll. Don’s present arrived yesterday after 3½ weeks of going nowhere. So we wrapped our presents to each other – we each had one late package – and opened them in the evening. I gave Don a book that he wanted. He gave me a miniature side table for the English Cottage. (I just so happened to send him a link and he took the hint.)
I took these this morning and it was still fairly dark outside. I’ll get better photos for you later.
Isn’t it lovely? I believe the seller found it at an estate sale. I don’t know how old it is, but I suspect it’s from the 80s or 90s. It’s handmade. It’s actually prettier in person than it was in the photos on Etsy.
I’d like a real-life version of this table. The scallops and curves are beautiful.
A view from a little further back:
Note how you can see one of Don’s Big Boys through the window in both photos – and an old black and white photo of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. That makes me laugh. A lot of miniaturists use backdrops and I suppose I should – eventually. But when something is in process, I figure you understand.
I also received a thumb latch door handle, which I’ve already installed on the exterior of the door. I tried to get a photo of it, but it was too dark in the room to get a good shot. I’ll share that with you tomorrow, hopefully.
It’s taking shape, my friends, it’s taking shape.
Also, our neighbor brought over some eggs for us. Her chickens have finally started laying.
Aren’t they beautiful? I love those soft pastels. I guess chickens often stop laying eggs in the winter but these guys are obviously on a different schedule.
They’re almost too pretty to eat!
17 days. Ignore the shenanigans from the Republicans in the House and Senate. It’s bad performance art. Seditious bad performance art, but bad performance art, nonetheless.
Okay. Time to go. Have to do a little prep for the upcoming snow.
Stay safe.

I do love watching a snow fall. Often my cats will join me on the window seat, but they get bored pretty quickly. Still, they stay to keep me warm. A winter pleasure (also, since we don’t have to shovel, it’s extra relaxing).
I adore that table! So glad it finally found its way to you. How graceful, and the finish is perfect for the cottage. It seems your first floor is nearing completion. Wondering about the bedrooms upstairs. And I love being able to see Big Boy and Roy and Dale in the background.
Do you remember how to blow eggs? Those are so lovely I think I would try and preserve them.
Enjoy your day, snowfall gazing and sipping a hot beverage.
Claudia says
The first floor needs lots of little details, but almost all of the furniture is in. I showed the bedroom on the blog. All the wallpaper and flooring is done and now I have to add furniture. I have a bed on the way to me in the mail.
No to preserving the eggs. Don wants to eat them. Besides, I’m sure we can request more.
Stay safe, Nora.

Beautiful table. I’m finding it hard to ignore. Cruz and Gohmert are from Texas and I. JUST. CAN’T. EVEN. It is soo embarrassing. Though, I’m loving that Lt. Gov. of Pennsylvania is trolling our Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick about welching on his reward offer for uncovering voter fraud. I’ll feel better I’m sure after January 6 and 20th. Enjoy your snow.
Claudia says
Gohmert might qualify as the dumbest member of Congress.
I love the Lt. Gov. of PA! He’s great.
Stay safe, Cindy.

I was looking at your dollhouse side table and it looked so familiar. I think I saw them in peoples homes when I was a kid. I know we didn’t have one like that, but I am sure many homes of my friends had them. And those eggs are so beautiful!! It was a lovely sight to see first thing this morning. I hope your coming snow is beautiful and that it is just enough and not too much! Happy New Year to you and Don. May this be your best year ever!! Lots of love!
Claudia says
The snow is wet and beautiful. The kind that clings to the branches of the trees.
Stay safe, Tana!

hooray that the wandering (or stranded) present arrived!
the table is beautiful and a great choice. i can understand why you want a life-size version for you. i am pleased to have such a table. not exact … it’s either cherry or mahogany (yours looks like oak …?) and the curves are a teeny bit different, but very, very similar and beautiful. the best part is it came to me from my parents and belonged to my paternal grandparents (who kept a glass dish of candy on it … much appreciated by their thirteen grandchildren). a treasure to me, for sure.
don’s big boy in the reflection made me smile. and it’s you keeping it real (a quality i like). how many bb’s are in his collection?
the eggs have such gorgeous colors. i could see myself taking one to the hardware store and asking them to color-match some paint for me and then finding something to paint.
i recall you once said don reads mostly non-fiction books (as have i). if you don’t mind sharing, what book did you give him?
i’ve been trying to think positively about the election stuff happening in the next couple of days and to tell the 20th to get a move on … but this latest attempt to keep pino around (and, worse, re-write the rules after the fact) is hard to ignore. i hope we remember the names of our elected officials (i can’t call them “leaders”) responsible for this craziness and vote them out as soon as possible and in the meantime let them know what we think of their junky actions. ugh!
good luck with the prep work and the amount of snow you get. glad you can enjoy watching it fall.
easier day here for getting to visit some of my family (socially-distanced, in my car), then home to rest.
happy sunday and stay safe!

Mine table is stained. It’s most likely a walnut stain.
Don has 3 Big Boys.
I’m not saying to ignore what’s going on, I’m just saying to try not to overly stress about it. I believe every one of these seditionists should be held to account.

Great to see the English Cottage, in my mind it’s in The Lake District as the exterior reminds me of the region’s architecture.
I took some leave between Christmas and New Year but it’s back to work tomorrow. We also have had snow but none too deep. I haven’t used public transport since March as my son is able to give me a lift but it means being dropped about a mile from my town centre work place at 7:20 when it’s still dark, as he journeys on the hospital where he works in the opposite direction. I take a flask of coffee and toast and eat breakfast at my desk before I start working. Fortunately I am picked up outside the library for the journey home.
Happy Sunday
Claudia says
I’m glad you have transport to and from work, Dee Dee. How nice of your son!

These eggs look like mine (the ones from my hens) :-) . Even the cardboard box could be mine. There is nothing better than eggs fresh from the “farm”.
The table is lovely!

I just had one of those eggs this morning, Regula, and it was delicious!

Chris K in WI says
Oh, those eggs!! So very pretty. And the table is beautiful. We have a gate leg table from my in-laws that is mahogany. I love it, but all of the scrollwork is not quite as lovely when I have to dust it!! But that red chair!! My in laws also had one almost identical in the living room. So pretty!!
Like kathy, I am trying so very hard to ignore the nonsense. But when the 2nd biggest idiot of the land (Ron Johnson) who supposedly represents me (of COURSE I didn’t vote for him and never ever would) is one of the circus clowns in this drama, it makes me NUTS. So many many things need to be evaluated in our government after the past 4 long and horrid years. I hope we have learned from it and realize the checks and balances we grew up learning about aren’t always what they are supposed to be when someone who has a mental deficiency, is not interested in the good of anyone or anything other than themselves, and who has absolutely no moral compass is somehow elected, we need more protections in place. And in those cases, does it seriously take 2.5 months for the transfer of power following an election? Does the counting of the elctoral vote NEED to be the 3rd Wed following the 2nd Sunday in Dec (or whatever that is)?? Wasn’t that because it took that long for people to get to Washington DC? Traditions are noble, but when they aren’t any longer necessary do we have to follow them and they can NEVER be changed? As progressive as many of the founders were, I would imagine they laugh hysterically at some of the things we seem to treasure, and other things we seem to trample in the name of their memory. I am trying, I really am!!!! But Jan 20 can’t get here quickly enough!!
I hope the snow is pretty and not too much. Enjoy and take care!!
Nora+Mills says
Yes, Kris. What happened to checks and balances? I guess when a dictator gets into office, everything that we were taught in civics goes out the window. :-(
kathy in iowa says
agree.
and now pino’s telling the election official in georgia to “find” 11,780 votes for him after a suggested “recalculation” of the ballots … and it’s on audiotape. how stupid is that? another of pino’s “perfect” calls. and if that’s not reason enough to use the 25th amendment now, i don’t know what is.
hope you’re staying safe and warm.

Donna says
I just heard that audio on the evening news Kathy and couldn’t believe it! God bless the other man for being calm and non-compromising in his responses to the request being made as well as the not so veiled threat. I don’t understand how he isn’t in jail already. It saddens and infuriates me how many people still totally support him. He doesn’t and never has cared for anyone other than himself and has a long, tawdry track record to prove it. Prayers continue for all of us…both in this country and around the world.
kathy in iowa says
hej, donna …
i agree. good that man and his lawyer stayed calm, clear … kudos also to whoever released the tape of that call!
i cannot understand … or respect or vote for … the elected officials not standing up to him, failing to invoke the 25th amendment time after time, crime after crime …. the first time? maybe they were as shocked as doctor birx looked when pino asked her about disinfecting the body with light, bleach to fight covid … but it’s been four years of this junk. unbelievable!
anyway … changing the subject as it’s getting late and i need some sleep …
hope you are safe, well. and amen to your prayers!

I can’t stand Ron Johnson and I call him out regularly on Twitter. He is yet another puppet of Putin.
I think the transition of power needs to happen much more quickly. In other countries, the new Prime Minister is seated the next day. Maybe we can’t do it that quickly, but two weeks? Yes.
Stay safe, Chris.

Oh my gosh, I have a table that looks almost identical to yours but in human size with a little more trim and scalloped edges. I had to take a second and third look at yours to make the comparison. How lovely. I have had mine for years and have always loved it. Like many of your readers I could move right into that room and be very comfortable. Thanks for sharing.
Claudia says
I could, too! Imagine the warmth from the Aga and some good books to read!

I would blow out the eggs instead of cracking them and use them at Easter in a bowl (or decorated and hanging!) They are stunning and no dyeing required!
I love your new table. It is so beautifully turned and finished. A wonderful find.
Happy New Year. I think the snow people I hired should be called the “If We Wait Long Enough It Will Melt Company.” I can’t do it now with my back and it’s icy enough I won’t even go out for the NYT in the driveway, after my fall. UGH. I hope I don’t have to find someone new. I really miss my old guy!
kathy in iowa says
hej, jeanie …
so sorry to hear that you fell and hurt your back. i pray for your comfort and a full and speedy recovery and i hope you will go to the doctor if need be.
i laughed at the name you suggested for the snow-removal company. just too bad it comes from slow service. good luck!

Falling snow is so peaceful, and watching it fall creates a sense of peace within me.
We had big snowfalls Christmas Eve and on the 30th. About 6 inches each time. That’s enough for now.
I’m spending the day at the window. Currently, there are 2 bald eagles in the woods. They are very close; close enough for photos. A bit earlier there were 5 of them.
I can hear the crows making a loud racket. There must be a food source nearby to bring crows AND the eagles in so close.
Whatever, the reason I will enjoy their visit while I can.
Claudia says
Oh, how wonderful, Trudy! Amazing. Enjoy, my friend.

I’ve enjoyed staying off the internet for a week or so, enjoying my daughters being home (week or two off from work), and otherwise using my time to stitch, playing board games, devouring my daughter’s home-cooked creative meals and baked goods, and reading. . So, a belated holiday greeting to all and a new year’s wish that our collective burdens will be lightened January 20.
Claudia, the side table is astoundingly detailed. The eggs are gorgeous, and their shell colors seem like a harbinger of Spring to come. Enjoy your snowfall. We’re having rain soon.

I love those legs on the table. Don did good taking your hint…eh? And, I had to blow up the picture to understand the Big Boy reference. Cute…and perfect….real life intersecting with miniature life.

Those eggs look too pretty to eat, don’t they? While the snow is beautiful…I hope you don’t get too much. Stay safe! ;)

Vicki says
‘I’d like a real-life version of this table.’
I feel fortunate to say that I indeed have the real-life version, and 3 other occasional/end tables, sofa, boudoir chair, armchair with ottoman, huge china closet, dining set with table, 4 armless chairs and 2 with arms; twin beds including headboards and footboards, massive dresser with mirror; a nightstand. It all came to me through my mother, eventually intended to come to me via our aunt (per her wishes). I haven’t known what to call it but I’ve heard it referred to as Country French (as opposed to French Provincial, which I tend to think of as painted white although I may be dead wrong on that); I wish I’d known exactly when she bought the stuff but at least 1950s if not 1940s.
My husband doesn’t like any of it (he doesn’t like my ‘antique’ Franciscanware either; he wants modern-modern/new-new, on everything; not a collector [doesn’t like the ‘knickknacks’], would prefer living in an industrial loft with low-slung leather sofa and chairs; no rugs; glass and metals and stone [like those quartz kitchen counters] for decor [all in neutrals like gray and black and white; and, oh, BTW, only black and white photographs in frames; and no bookshelves!], and a largely stainless-steel kitchen [we are total/complete opposites on most things of life yet we somehow made it work as long ‘marrieds’]); he thinks this lovely wood furniture is very dated and too matchy-matchy but I, of course, love it; and it was a thrill in 2019 that I finally saved up enough money (has taken YEARS) to get dining chairs, sofa and the two bigger chairs with ottoman, all reupholstered (in a durable cotton-type, stiff velvet; various complementary solid colors [I simply HAVE to have COLOR in my surroundings]).
I love the curves in the wood and the feminine shape of the furniture legs; makes me feel special; it’s elegant furniture even though I don’t consider us to be sophisticated or elegant people! The woods have held up so well although my mother did have a couple of the small tables professionally refinished in the 1980s and my husband carefully rehabbed the dining table in the 1990s. I in turn had the dining chairs refinished professionally (thoughtfully) in 2013. Anything we’ve done, we’ve been true to the furniture and not changed it (just maintained it). I have other furniture that is more roughed-up/vintage and I would NOT change it, but the aforementioned stuff is the exception.
It sounds so cliche, but they really don’t make, in large part, furniture like this anymore (there’s not one bit of plastic on it ANYwhere; I feel like I remember it came from a Michigan manufacturer), so I’m grateful because, throughout my life, I’ve rarely had any new pieces of furniture anywhere I’ve lived, in all my ‘single’ years or even my married years. I have attachment to material objects (so sue me!!); I make no apologies. I love this furniture. It reminds me of my auntie and so many happy times at her house in my youth (especially at Christmas; she was Crazy For Christmas), and I loved her, and she loved me. I remember when she died and the furnishings came to my mother, and what that meant to my frugal mom who hardly ever had anything really nice in her spotless but spare home. I can look around my own house now, and it’s not arranged how I want everything yet because we’re in the endless ‘home improvement’ phase, but what I do see of the furniture prompts special memories of times I enjoyed with people I loved who are now gone.
So, Claudia, understand how much I love your new doll house table. I was happy to see your photo. What a key find/gift for you. It is going to be so much fun to see how you finish this house!
kathy in iowa says
hej, vicki …
i very much relate to what you wrote about getting attached to things. i am a very sentimental person and though there are lots of times i wish to go back to my growing-up years with every thing and especially everyone in their original place, i know that can’t be so i just cherish my family and also appreciate the things i have from those good old days . from where i am right now, i see my brother’s dresser and lamp and a painting by my mother. i also have a side table (described above), an old wicker settee, the hide-a-bed sofa and coffee table from my parents, among other things and i am pleased and proud to have them and take care of them for my family. :)
i hope you are staying well and safe!
kathy in iowa
Vicki says
hi, kathy; thank you for your always-kind thoughts; yes, I am very sentimental; the thing is, I have hardly any family left and there’s now no one who remains to remember my childhood with me and I’m always worried I’m forgetting things (whereas I have friends who still have brothers and sisters alive with all of their shared childhood experiences which they can remind each other of, and talk about); so, I need the little collectibles/keepsakes and even the furniture to help me remember, because I love the remembering as I was blessed with growing up in a wonderful family; the memories are important to me…comforting…
…by coincidence, I was speaking earlier today on the phone with a friend who lost her home in one of the recent/past Calif wildfires; and, with that house of course went all of her belongings of a good, long life of 70 years, but I knew she never had a big attachment to ‘stuff’ and she affirmed it today when we were on a conversation much centered on decluttering/downsizing (me!) for the new year, that the only thing she really misses of what got burned up in the fire is her photo collection and she wishes she’d made duplicates to keep in a safe deposit box; of course, with so many people now, their photos are thankfully on their phones, archived … but she misses school photos, the ones of her ancestors, the pictures from vacations/trips; and I always enjoyed looking at her gorgeous wedding album which she kept after the divorce (because I also knew her ex-husband); so, we (her friends) keep trying to find photos for her, from when we traveled or had dayside outings or parties like Christmas get-togethers and she’s contacted her own various relatives to ask if they’d share; anyway, my point is that she needs the photos to help her remember all the good times (because we do get to a stage where the ‘ol brain just can’t remember EVERYthing!).
(your settee sounds wicker-wonderful; my husband’s aunt had several pieces of her grandparents’ wicker furniture [front porch/garden-party furniture, I was told] from the late 1800s, in terrific condition, of which I was in utter awe; this aunt lived in Columbus and I was so glad to meet her once [gosh, 30 years ago] before she passed [because the weather could be severe there in Ohio, she kept the wicker collection in her finished basement year ’round; I imagine her adult ‘senior-aged’ daughter has that wicker now, as it’s the kind of thing you always try to save; these pieces were so sturdy, painted a darker green {like a faded pine green; not shiny}, nothing like what I have from the 90s which is white {and apparently white wicker is not fashionable now like it was in the Shabby Chic days of mid-1980s and just into the 2000s, but I don’t care because I like it, and I don’t follow trends!!}])
kathy in iowa says
glad you could meet that relative. yes, they do get a bunch of snow in ohio (i was born in northeastern ohio, did some schooling in cincinnati … and have only fondness for it all).
nice of you and other people to share duplicate photos with your friend. i will be praying for her, too.
good for you … i say like what you like! i am the same and happily stopped following trends before i graduated from high school, thanks to the wise upbringing i got from my parents. :)
saw you wrote about being sick. sorry to hear that … food poisoning is awful. hope and pray you feel all better by now.
stay safe.

Vicki says
I wish there was some way you could save the shells of those eggs.*** How nice that a neighbor brought a whole carton of good, organic eggs for you and Don.
***when I was in elementary school and we had an Easter Egg painting project going on in class (because, back then, art in class, as well as music, was just as important as history and math), I think the teacher was probably teaching us how to do a pysanka (Ukrainian egg [I may have spelled that wrong, both pysanka AND Ukrainian]) because I can (barely) remember melting the wax; anyway, we did something like pick away gingerly to make a pin hole in the egg to drain out/blow out the white/yolk so that we had the delicate ’empty’ egg to paint or etch (a way to save the egg shell intact); but, gosh, those natural shell colors are something to see; beautiful nature we’d like to ‘save’ but at least you took a photo of them…
(I tell ya, SNOW on the horizon, those EGGS, that TABLE; it’s almost too much for me tonight. I’ve been sick as a dog since last Monday night [consensus from friends and husband and other family is that I suffered from food poisoning; a long story; I had NO idea of what this coming week would bring for me but, although I’m not out of the woods quite yet, I turned the corner today and am very much better now] and, as I ‘re-enter’ my world at home and get up to speed with my version of normalcy, trying to catch up the week I’ve lost, your blog post is full of New Year delight, Claudia!)
Vicki says
I see Jeanie in the comments had already suggested blowing out the eggs. Have to laugh at myself because I googled and there’s a jillion tutorials on how to blow out an egg to save the shell. Doesn’t have to be my distant memory, not in these days of the internet.
Claudia says
I’m so sorry you’ve been ill, Vicki! Food poisoning is the worst. I hope you begin to feel better and stronger.
As for the eggs, they were a gift from our neighbor, who kindly shared her bounty with us. We are going to eat them because that’s what she gave them to us for. Maybe in the future, we will do that. But I have preserved quail eggs and all sorts of other colored eggs in my stash.

My husband began to think I had Covid. That he could be an asymptomatic carrier, since he is the one of us who does have to get out for things although we’re so careful. It was when I got fever and a bad headache this whole week past (along with all the other gross aspects of ‘food poisoning’). But I wasn’t having problems breathing. And the fever was mild. It was a scare, though. I almost think it was harder on him than me because he didn’t know what to do and figured going to the ER was pointless. (I think I’m sounding like a major Drama Queen here.) I’m sure you’ve seen the headlines about SoCalif (well, L.A. County) as epicenter for the virus and that they’re turning ambulances away which is, to me, unimaginable for the paramedics to have to make that decision in absence of an ER doctor as to who isn’t worth treating because they’re too far gone. But there aren’t any hospital beds. WE NEED THAT SHIP BACK FROM SAN DIEGO. And Mayor Garcetti says someone is getting Covid every six seconds now. Overtaken, with more surge to come.
Yesterday morning, we ventured out for the first time in SO long because we simply HAD to pick up mail at the post office. While we were driving thru our small town, my husband pointed out one of our three Covid testing stations and how no one was there. But it was because it wasn’t to open for two more hours. Then it dawned on us why we saw so many cars ‘parked’ on that street. (I’d said, “This is so weird; nobody is ever parked on this street; what are all these cars doing here?”) Then we noticed people inside the ‘parked’ cars. Jaw drop: The ‘line’ of cars filled the entire long street, wound around to another long street, and then around THAT block whose street becomes a state highway. I have never seen anything like that in my life except for maybe when I was trying to get out of Dodger Stadium or a concert at one of the massive music venues in the city of Los Angeles (used to be a big jam up at the Universal Amphitheatre [it’s not there anymore]). I looked at my husband and said, “I wonder what the lines are like at the other two testing sites?” But, you know, it left us just feeling…disturbed. The magnitude of it. In our little suburban town. Too real.
So we drove in the other direction and instead of turning to go home, my husband kept driving. He was upset. We’d said we weren’t going to out of town, stay off the highways, etc. But we drove to the beach. And it was incredible. There was no one there, for miles. All of the motorhomes and trailers gone, because all up and down the SoCalif coast, any ‘camping’ has been shut off. We realized we haven’t seen that much ‘coast’ on the coast highway north in probably 25 years. High tide and big waves, so we did stop; just drank it in. Temps in the 50s with fog and sun, but I was in a short-sleeved tee (I love the winter beach). There was one section with surfers but, you know, just fish in the ocean; dots on that wide seascape; and, wow, did my husband and I need this break in our routine because, from here, Covid is only going to get worse in our area and we’re nailing down hard, going NOwhere (a bubble of two). There’s yard work, work in the house, on the house, on the cars; plenty to keep us busy at home.
But that testing site LINE OF CARS gave us pause.
Vicki says
A change we’ve decided to make is that when we’re in our yard, except for one isolated section out back, we’re going to mask up. I had an incident last night where I was looking for my cat and I didn’t realize the neighbor was right there on the other side of the wood fence (which isn’t tight; you can see between the slats). This is the neighbor who is never careful, who congregates, nobody coming or going ever wears a face covering. It wasn’t even my neighbor per se; it was someone visiting them (I think; not sure, it was dark). I didn’t have on a mask and then obsessed I was too close to them.
I went a little crazy. So my husband and I talked it thru and plotted out how many feet we think it actually was from where I’d stood (see, I hadn’t heard them there until they spoke up) and decided I was ‘okay’ in my distancing, but we can’t afford a close call like that, and he’s had it happen in the front yard when neighbors walk right up to him (happened yesterday afternoon in fact but he was on his guard and held up his hand, ‘stand back’); so, the change is that ‘literally’ every time we open the front door to go out onto the driveway or in the garage or the front lawn, the mask is ON. We’re completely avoiding the other side of our house because of THAT particular neighbor’s bank of open windows we have to walk by (both of my neighbors on either side are negligent and don’t pay attention to the ‘rules’ about Covid; old housing tract [good, strong homes {but that were, for their day, budget housing for young families}] where the houses are too close to one another).
Claudia, I’ve said it before, but be glad you live in the country on a larger property where you can distance yourself better than we suburbanites can!
Claudia says
Well, I was down at the mailbox the other day to get the mail and the mailman circled back to deliver a package he forgot to put in the box. I didn’t have a mask on, nor did he, so I hightailed it backwards up the driveway so I could be more than 6 ft from him.
It happens here, as well. Don goes to recycle (with a mask on) and there is invariably someone there without a mask on.
Being in the country helps a little, but we still run into the problem.
Stay safe.

There are lines of cars for testing occurring all over the country, not just California. There’s lots of video out there. It’s a very, very scary time.
Stay safe, Vicki.

We just so seldom get out. And it was a shock.

Yes, indeed.

From the comments, you aren’t the only person with a real-life version of the table! Looks like lots of people inherited or purchased pieces like this one.
Michigan was known for manufacturing furniture, based mostly in Grand Rapids on the western side of the state.
Stay safe, Vicki.

Love your latest acquisition! It is such a day brightener to see your houses in progress. Enjoy watching the snow softly fall.

Thank you so much, Donna.
Stay safe!
