Day Two Hundred Seventy-Eight

December 16, 2020 at 9:40 am by Claudia

16 – 24 inches.

Yep. And high winds at times, which will result in drifting.

And temps in the 20s during the day and the teens at night.

Our biggest concern is losing power, of course.

As I write this, the oil company is delivering oil. Check.

We prepped a lot yesterday. Check.

Don is recycling this morning so we can empty our bins before the snow hits. Check.

We will be charging phones, my iPad, and our chargers.

And bringing in bottled water we have stored in the back of Don’s non-functioning car. (We bought it when the hurricane was coming.)

And that’s about all we can do.

Most of the snow will come down late tonight, overnight and into Thursday morning.

It’s a monster of a storm, so keep us and everyone impacted by this storm in your prayers. We’re nervous, but also sort of excited – that thing that happens when Mother Nature is in charge and you can do nothing about it. We’ve already had a hurricane this year, now we have this.

2020, I’ll be glad to see you leave.

After we finish last minute prep, we’ll just lay low here at the cottage and do things that make us happy; writing music, playing with dollhouses, that sort of thing.

If I don’t post tomorrow, it will be because we don’t have power. Fingers crossed that all goes well on that end.

To all of you who will be dealing with this winter storm, we are sending our love and prayers your way. Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

We are waiting for the storm also. Husband made dinner last night because of my sore back and knee. IT WAS INTERESTING. I spent the morning cleaning up the kitchen. I too am worried about loss of electric and am charging everything that I can. We ALWAYS have power issues so I plan on putting heavy blankets on the bed and couches and making some cookies. Before bed I make a pot of coffee and keep it hot in a thermos. NEED my coffee.

Expecting lots of snow in New York . Good luck to all.

Yes, while you were describing all you had to do to get ready for the storm, I pictured you and Don enjoying the beautiful snow and snuggling up on the couch to enjoy some music. You are lucky to have each other if you will be stranded in the snow! Reminds me of that song, “Let it snow”!
Hope all stay safe and warm!

We are expected to get down to 30 tonight. The last few years it hasn’t been getting cold enough to kill all the annuals. I am so looking forward to a new year. Things are already looking up. One granddaughter got her covid injection yesterday. Another granddaughter and my grand son’s wife will be getting theirs tomorrow. They are all R.N’s in the medical center. And only 5 weeks, 35 days until inauguration. Stay safe and warm. The snow looks so beautiful in pictures, but I don’t think I could manage the cold.

Stay safe Claudia, Don and anyone else expecting heavy snow. It’s cool and rainy in my part of England.
I’ve recently adopted a rescue cat from a charity. We don’t know if she was lost or abandoned but she has been living rough for some time. They’ve named her Pumpkin as she looks ginger and was found in October. I showed a friend at work a photo as I thought she might be a British Shorthair (the original Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland) as she has two herself and she agreed that definitely has a look of one. Just need to keep her indoors for three months!

    Happy Wednesday

Just saw this weather update, where they mention Hudson Valley region:
Poughkeepsie, New York, saw temperatures just over 20 degrees on Wednesday morning, and although the scene of the Hudson River behind AccuWeather National Weather Reporter Dexter Henry was calm, it won’t last for long. “Everything looks nice, but the Hudson Valley region here is expected to see the first major snowstorm of the year and what people are calling the biggest snowstorm in years, saying that [it will be] the biggest snowstorm for this region since March of 2018,” Henry told AccuWeather Chief Broadcast Meteorologist Bernie Rayno.

So, please stay nice and warm and hunkered down. It’s been years since I had to deal with a nor’easter and/or blizzards (having lived outside of Cleveland, my Dad’s parents lived in Buffalo, Mom’s family lived in Marlboro, Mass and I lived in New Hampshire by White Mountains several years). While I miss the beauty of fresh snow I sure don’t miss the shoveling, power outs / using fireplace for heating with power out, etc. Be careful and stay well!!!

Oh Claudia…We just got 7 inches of snow just north of Oklahoma City yesterday, so I can only IMAGINE what is coming your way. Not one person in the OKC area lost power, which was great, as we went through 10 days without power back in late October due to a horrendous ice storm. When the lights flicker now, my heart starts beating fast. It did something to us being without any electricity for 10 long days and cold nights. So I’m praying for you guys to have beautiful snow, but that it doesn’t affect your life with power outages. Take care and we will be thinking about you down here in OKC. ♥

If one needs to be snowed in, I can’t think of a more charming cottage or environment. Just hope you stay warm and have food you can cook without power! I suspect you worked that out long ago!

Did you see the Broadway people singing “Georgia on my Mind?” as part of the Vote effort. It’s not a parody song, but the original and boy, does it sound fabulous!

Last night I was thinking about your oil and hoping you were full!!!! Glad to hear that. Hopefully the power will stay on and it will likely be crazy, but do-able. I did hear that the snow will likely be falling at a rate of 3 inches per hour. Wowza! Do I remember correctly that Stella works with propane? I know what you mean about that small bit of excitement one feels w/ the first big storm of the year. But by late Jan and into Feb it is really just dread and the thrill is definitely gone.

I know you & Don won’t be bored with the many on-going projects you have, plus there are always books to be read. Take care and be careful!

Stella has propane, so if the power goes out, we’ll still be able to cook so that’s a good thing.

I’m mostly dreading this storm. And since most of it is going to fall while we’re sleeping, we won’t be able to see it falling. Maybe that’s a good thing.

      Stay safe, Chris.

It seems like you’re ready in every way possible and now it’s up to Mother Nature and the power company. I’ll be thinking of you and Don. 2020 is just one big hunkering down after another.

Hello! I hope all are enjoying the snow! It sure is pretty. We have about 6 inches and it’s supposed to snow through the night. My husband put the plow on yesterday but isn’t going to open the driveway until the morning. We celebrate a good snow storm because of the quiet peacefulness and simplistic beauty. The wood stove is going so it’s toasty warm in here and when it gets dark, I am going to turn the outside lights on and sit and watch it snow! In younger days, I would have built a snowman by now.

I am praying for those that have any hardships because of the snow, I wish we all could just sit back and say “Thank you God for this beauty” but I know there will be issues to be dealt with.
    Take care…

We don’t have a wood stove, so if our power goes out we have no heat. That’s the worry for most people.

I’d be happy with a few inches. I think I could appreciate the beauty more. But high winds, blizzard-like conditions and 2 feet of snow? No happy.

      Thanks, Kelly.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
