A Dollhouse Shop, Riley and Fall

September 9, 2009 at 5:47 pm by Claudia

I took this photo a couple of days ago – and there are even more leaves now! You’d think it was October here. I hope most of the leaves are remaining when my sister visits in October. She needs her fall-fix because she lives in Florida. It feels like fall here – a little cooler, a little more golden light. I know it isn’t officially, but if you looked at my lawn you’d be hard pressed to say it is still summer.

I have begun exploring some dollhouse shops in the area – and by area, I mean New Jersey. There is nothing in my neck of the woods. There used to be a little shop about 20 minutes from here – I went there with my husband once, long before I actually bought the dollhouse. The ladies there were so sweet and helpful. Several months later, after I’d been away working, we drove by (it was on the way to our local airport) and there was a half off sale going on. I didn’t have time to stop but it seemed ominous. It was. They went out of business.

So I am forced to travel even further south. There are 3 shops within about 15 minutes of each other in New Jersey – right in the area where my niece used to live. Today I went to the closest one – called Circus Circus.

Lovely shop. The owner was very helpful and has offered to show me how to electrify my doll house when I am ready to begin that part of the project. The dollhouse’s exterior needs some TLC – there is supposed to be trim around the roof and there is none…I want to replace the shutters, fix some shingles and repaint the whole thing. She couldn’t have been more helpful. I bought some glue and some trim and some magazines. I restrained myself from buying anything else. There were so many dollhouses around the shop that I was inspired – lots of ideas.

Yesterday, you remember, we took the dogs to the Vet’s. Scout needed rabies, a check-up, the usual. Riley, my damaged boy, needed his ears cleaned and his nails clipped, along with a distemper vaccination and a lyme/heartworm test. Sounds simple, right? Wrong. Riley was so abused as a pup that he won’t let anyone near his ears, his neck or his toes. He will bite if he feels threatened or scared. Normally, he is the most mild-mannered and gentle of dogs…nice to everyone, sweet and good. We have come to accept that our boy has issues and that we are blessed to have him as a family member. Our job is to love him and protect him and give him a safe home. He has allergies and about once a year his ears get really bad. So we have to sedate him, and then the Vet has to sedate him by IV and his ears are cleaned, his nails are clipped, and he is sent home with medicine (pills – no drops – he wouldn’t let me put drops in his ears!) He also has an antihistamine this time – maybe we can avoid more ear problems next year. He was so groggy when we got him home that he could barely walk and was out of it until this morning. It took two of us to get him in the house and up the stairs. Poor baby. Today he is back to normal – but I worried about him all day yesterday. I can’t help it – I’m his Mama.

Poor Riley. He is so LUCKY to have you as his skin mama. He is such a beautiful boy. We give Kodak Benadryl for his allergies.

    Hugs,
    Marsha

Oh I am so sorry about Riley! I work for a Vet. so I see this almost daily. And I know you worry. It is so hard but we also have clients that just send in and sedate to get it done. Glad he is back to normal today.
Cool you found a doll house shop!

Can’t help but love Rescue Riley. Rescue animals are the best! So sweet to hear the story of Riley’s day. Good to hear that he is back to his normal self.

Look forward to see the dollhouse. What a fun project

    Have a fallish evening.

Hope the golden color of fall is still with you when you sister visits!

Ah, Claudia, and so it begins! LOL! You’ll be searching high and low and inbetween for dollhouse shops . . . and if you can’t get enough of them there’s always my personal favorite . . . eBay! Speaking of which I’m officially banned from eBay for the remainder of the month . . . bummer!

I feel for you and Riley . . . poor dear! My Sheltie, Shelby, also has allergies and this time of year is the worst . . . except for him it’s his paws . . . he’s constantly licking them! Drives me nuts, but what can you do? He’s also due for his shots, reminds me I should make an appointment!

    Thanks for sharing!

    Blessings,
    Teresa

I feel bad for him but he will feel much better. It’s so hard because he can’t tell you how he is feeling. :(

Poor Riley. Life can be so tough for a pup. He’s lucky to have found a Mama that loves him so much. He’s a real beauty too! Fall is just starting to come on here on the west coast too. I can’t wait, I love it!

How lucky for Riley to have found caring parents that love him and take such good care of him. Love the picture of your yard- fall is my most favorite season :) I cannot believe you did not buy more at the dollhouse store! How did you resist?

Poor Riley. I hope he is better today. Can you save some leaves for me if they all fall off your beautiful tree?

Riley sounds a bit like Luna, when she visits the vet. I’ve never known such a ferocious cat before, and she’s so little. It is a bit humourous, though. One little cat, and three adults trying to give her a check-up!

I love dollhouse shops. We have a small one nearby, and it’s so hard to only choose one or two treasures, but I suppose it’s best to think long term with such things.

poor baby! My shepherd is the same way! We didn’t start with her young enough and she is scared to death to have her nails and ears done. We took her for sedation one time and she really fought it! (it was not IV) in the end she was so drugged she was nipping at the air trying to bite! VERY tramatic for her…now she is even WORSE. Next time we have to do this we’ll consider the IV method. Glad he is feeling better!

Claudia,Poor Riley I hope he is feeling better. I am from New Jersey. There used to be a doll house store in Medford and in Cherry hill. Its been 20 years since I moved from there so I am not sure if its still there. There was a counted cross stitch store near by.I will ask my Mom she still goes back to NJ every couple months to visit my dads uncle so she may know where there are more shops. There are some beautiful stores near the water front in Burlington city also.Shabby chic ones.Hugs,Jen

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
