Egg Cups, the Beginning

March 6, 2024 at 9:21 am by Claudia

Another rainy day. That’s all I’ll say about that.

I saw one of the Carolina wrens this morning. Or rather, I heard him first and turned to look out the den window. There he was, perched on the top branches of the hydrangea, singing away. I haven’t seen any robins yet. When they first appear, they’re usually in a group. Maybe traveling north? We seem to be a favorite stop on the way, Anyway, I’ll alert you when they make their presence known.

I probably should have taken more than one photo for the beginning of the egg cup tour, but my plans to take them yesterday were scuttled as I was deep into solving a jigsaw puzzle. I haven’t done one in a long time. This one’s theme is Japanese wood blocks. It’s beautiful.

You’ll see it soon. I hope to finish it today.

The first group of egg cups, chosen randomly.

On the left, one of my favorites. I found it on eBay when I first started collecting. I love the designs where a chick or a duck is either holding up the egg cup or, as in this case, hiding on the other side of the cup. They’re so playful and charming. There’s a pale pink marking around the top of the egg cup. A chicken/rooster is pecking at food and a chick is on the other side of the cup.

Center: I’d say this one is in my top five (I’m not counting Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. They’re in their own category.)

Again, found early in my collecting journey when beautiful cups like these were easier to find. It’s very difficult to find them these days. The bunny as artist. He’s wearing an artist’s smock with a bow, a pair of pants, and is holding a palette. He subject is the egg itself; he’s transforming it into a smiling face.

Right: A darling egg cup that was a gift from my friend, Linda (who you know from this blog.) The sticker says “Our Own Import.” You can’t see the tail, but it’s a salter. There are holes in the tail and you pull it out to salt your egg. Ingenious!

Oh, there are a lot more to go! I suppose it’s time to pull out the fabric eggs, as well.

In other news, I’m plunging ahead with Wolf Hall  (only about 150 pages to go) and have already ordered Bring Up the Bodies  (the next book in the trilogy) from the library. In a rare instance, it’s actually on the shelves at my local library branch. Two of my favorite authors, John Connolly and James Lee Burke, have new books coming out in May and June and I’m on the hold list for those as well.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

love seeing the egg cups and hearing their histories. each time you post a photo of a few egg cups i play a little game before reading your post. i try to guess which one might be your favorite out of the group, and i also pick my own first choice … haha. today i guessed the bunny-as-artist for both of us … maybe because we both like to paint.

glad you’ve got some books, the puzzle and the carolina wren to offset the rain.

we began seeing robins here about ten days ago. i always thought they were solely ground-feeders, but we’ve seen two or three on my parents’ second-story deck. fun to see along with the red birds, doves, nuthatches, blue jays, three kinds of woodpeckers, starlings and other birds and, of course, earl. sometimes burl and merle come with him. love them all and am grateful that my parents taught my brother, sister and me to be kind to animals.

after a busy day yesterday (lots of errands and calls), i am hoping to take it easy today.

hope you all have a wonderful day. stay safe.

As much as you’ve featured your egg cups in the past, I am still delighted to read about them, see them, and realize your obvious enjoyment of your collection.

Nice you’ve started to showcase your cute collection of egg cups. I, too, have a modest collection of egg cups and I happen to have the bunny-as-artist one. I fell in love with it because my husband is an artist. I have a couple more of the same bunny in different scenarios. Have fun doing your puzzle. Exciting to wait and watch for the birds returning to your garden. We’ve seen a red-winged blackbird already. Hugs, Elaine

Your egg cups are enchanting and rather magical.
I just read that Mitch McConnell endorsed the a**h***. Have these people no spines, no morals, no sense of honor? It blows my mind.

    Take Care,

He has no moral compass. Period. I’m not one bit surprised that endorsed you-know-who.

      Thanks, Kaye.

I always love the egg cup tour! I can see why these are favorites.

Maybe the robins never made it as far as you. We saw them here all winter. I think their brains are scrambled. I know mine is!

You mean on the way south or north? When they were flying south, they definitely stopped here. There were about 50 of them on the property!

It’s so fun to see all your egg cups! Perfect! We had a lot of rain overnight, but clearing now. Looking forward to more egg cups…and seeing your finished puzzle!

We’re having the same rainy weather here. Right now it’s pouring.
Yesterday at dusk I heard a robin. I get excited when the robins start to return, and eventually hear the singing of the tree frogs.

Oh, what fun to tip-toe through the Egg Cups once more. It is like seeing some old friends!

I put some things out today for Easter. Not much, but enough to have the little one walk around and chat and chatter about things when she sees them. She is coming for an over-night on Friday. Such fun!!

Hubs was outside talking to some of the Village workers this aft and they said there were more Robins that stuck around all “winter” this yr than any of them had ever seen. With the river running, they are happy.

Hope your puzzle is nearly done and the rain isn’t too much. We might get some on Friday!!!! Take care.

Jeanie from Michigan said the same thing – she thinks the robins stayed around all winter. Ours did not.

Have fun with your little one!

      Stay safe, Chris.

I do enjoy a tour of your egg cups each year. I remember when you shared your egg cups and I was excited because I collect them also. When I found the little bird I knew that it belonged with you and your whimsical collection. So much rain, I’m ready for a bit of sunshine.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
