It was chilly this morning! Don and I both remarked on it. I ran upstairs to put on some socks, Don put on a sweatshirt. But we refuse to turn up the heat. Too early. Autumn is everywhere; in the changing leaves, the golden light, the gutters that need to be cleaned out today, leaves on the ground and leaves in my potted plants.
I can’t get over the fact that my heavenly blue morning glories have not produced a single flower. This has never happened before. I sowed the seeds at the same time I always do, they took off quickly and the vines are lush and filled with large, healthy leaves. But no flowers. The other morning glory that I planted – can’t remember the name – that flowers early did just beautifully. But not the heavenly blues, which are usually no-fail. Has anyone else ever had this happen?
The moonflowers usually flower well after the morning glories, so since they’re already flowering, I’m thinking nothing will happen with the MGs. Makes me sad. Ah, well.
We just booked our hotel in Edinburgh so we’re all set except for whatever train trips we take in England. Whoo hoo! There’s a lot to do before we leave, but we’ll get it done.
In the meantime, I have to go into the city tomorrow to work for a day on the Anastasia National Tour. It promises to be a LONG one, so I won’t be posting tomorrow. I’ll be back on Wednesday.
Happy Monday.

too bad about the non-blooming flowers, but congratulations on the “anastasia” work. hope the day isn’t as long as you might be thinking it will be and that you never feel pressure to post something here every day.
the rest will fall into place, but glad the biggest details of your trip are taken care of (airline tickets bought, hotel rooms all booked). i am very happy that you and don get to take such a big, fun trip! in the meantime, hope you enjoy the process of planning and packing, too.
happy monday!

Thank you, Kathy!

It’s nice to have all the big details of your trip booked. It will such a great adventure for you and Don. I hope you have a good day of work tomorrow. It’s a bit cloudy and cooler here this morning. I think Fall might just be around the corner for this Georgia girl. I’m ready! Another day of self care and rest. Hugs!
Claudia says
Cloudy and cool here as well. Rain on the way tomorrows. Take care!
Donnamae says
Yes…Fall is in the air! I for one, am delighted. I’m also, happy to hear that most of your trip is settled…that has to be a relief. I know, for a procrastinator like me, it certainly would be!
I’ve never grown morning glories….aren’t there any buds? Seems really strange. Your pots of coleus are gorgeous. I have two pots…one thriving….and, one that serves as a late night or early morning buffet for the deer. Sigh.
Glad to hear you have a work day for tomorrow. Travel safe! ;)
Claudia says
No buds. Not a one. So frustrating! Thanks, Donnamae.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
My MG’s flowered early this year. I have never had them flower before late Aug or early Sept. BUT, they didn’t last more than about 2 weeks! Since that brief flowering, they have just vined-on, with no flowers. Then, on Saturday, I was out doing some clean up, dumping petunia baskets, and saw a rogue pink and white one growing up the cedar tree. I have never had (or planted) a pink and white MG before. So that was a rather wonderful surprise!! I consider the 20 budded sunflower, the 2 beautiful pumpkins from the compost, and those MG’s to be my little summer miracles this year.
Have a great Monday & Tuesday! Safe travels.
Claudia says
I guess my moonflower is the miracle this year. Usually it doesn’t bloom until October and often gets cut off by a frost.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
AND it means you were able to enjoy it before you leave on your trip! Seemingly little miracles can be missed so easily!
Claudia says
Yes, a good reminder of everyday miracles, Chris!
Lottie says
I know, my morning glories didn’t bloom either! I planted seeds along a chain link fence by my den on April 15th. Lots of vine and no bloom! Last week I read that MG do not like a lot of rain, and boy have we had a lot of rain this summer in SC. So I cut the vines off the fence and cleaned the area up. I’ll try again next year. :-)
Claudia says
Oh, maybe that’s it! We have had SO much more rain than normal. I bet you’re right, Lottie.
Wendy T says
It’s noticeably cooler here as well, but I keep expecting the hot weather as our summers don’t seem to begin until this time of year. Too many outdoor chores to do…cleaning the gutter, the garden I’ve been neglecting, but I can only do drips and drabs until my fella gets out of hospital. We’ve been going twice a day to visit; he eats better, takes his medication well, and enjoys our moist paper towel rub downs since he can’t groom himself…the little trickster learned how to get around his e-collar, so he’s now wearing that plus an inflatable collar so he won’t bother the surgical site. He was getting at the site and pulled out the sutures, which is why he went back for a second surgery and now a longer hospital stay. All the staff love him (he’s a handsome all black cat), and the surgeon an de attending vets say he’s doing well. My fingers have been crossed for so long I don’t think I can uncross them anymore… Anyway, glad your hotel in Edinburgh has been booked. I’m so excited for you. Anastasia is coming here next season. My daughter is trying to round up friends to see it.
Claudia says
Your daughter will love it. It’s a beautiful musical.
Your poor boy! I hope this is over with soon!
kathy in iowa says
hope you both feel better soon … like right this second (and stay that way)!

Thanks, Kathy! I feel better visiting him and seeing that he’s in good hands.

Chilly here too. In the high 40s Sunday morning at sunrise – brrrr. But I refuse to put the heat on until November 1. The rule is no furnace before Nov 1, no AC before May 1. Most years at least. I really enjoy that usually short window of time when neither are needed – and I try to take advantage of it. Ends up being May & October most years, but I’m OK with that. Glad to hear your trip’s coming together. Do you plan on blogging during it? Or are you just going to relax, enjoy it & show us photos etc afterward? Peace.

I know! Just having the windows open with neither AC or the furnace on is such a treat. I’m going to blog during the trip but not every day. We’ll see what happens!
Kelly Bollinger says
Hi Claudia, there are two things that come to mind regarding your Heavenly Blue Morning Glories not blooming, too much nitrogen and not enough sun. Either culprit will cause the plant to produce abundant foliage and withhold blooms. Maybe the location you plant them has become more shaded than you realized. That is what is happening in my yard. Even my butterfly bushes are not flourishing like they used to so I had to move one to a sunnier spot and it is much happier.
Claudia says
Thanks Kelly. That area gets so much sun that I often have to go out and hand water during the day. And the other morning glories and moonflowers have bloomed so I don’t think it’s to much nitrogen either. Another commenter said she read that they don’t like too much rain and we have had far more rain than normal here, so maybe that’s the reason.
Nancy Blue Moon says
I see from your second picture that you have Jewelweed (or touch-me-not) growing at the cottage…not really a weed but a native herb…I have so much here and that is what I use to make my Jewelweed salve…so very good if you get into poison ivy or poison oak…helps with bug bites too!…and the flowers are pretty too!…Good luck in the city tomorrow!!
Claudia says
We have it growing all around the cottage. Too much of it, so I often pull it. But good to know that it can make a salve! I should try that! Thanks, Nancy.
Nancy Blue Moon says
Yes it can be invasive so it is best to try keep it under control!
dq says
Hi Claudia
same thing with me – a very healthy blue morning glory vine with lots of leaves and large leaves but not a single bloom! Grown in same place i have had the vine before with much success – so what gives?? My purple morning glories all had prolific blooms in my veggie patch (not where i wanted them to be !!). My mom’s in Toronto bloomed but less prolific this year – she counts the blooms every day and keeps track from year to year!
