Flowers and a Great Series

July 7, 2023 at 8:50 am by Claudia

The very hot and humid weather continues. My brain was mush yesterday and I couldn’t get anything accomplished. Took a long nap in the afternoon. I just don’t do well in this kind of weather. Supposedly, there are possible storms this afternoon. Right now, it’s not too bad out there so I might grab some time to finish mowing the front lawn.

Just, but not fully, opened. I love, love, love my coneflowers.

The coneflowers on the far side of the house are huge this year. I’ll try to grab a photo of them today.

I sowed a lot of zinnia seeds in the galvanized tub that sits on the funky patio. (Where I caught a groundhog trying to eat the leaves and had to move it up on top of the wooden bench.) My first bud has appeared.

There are far more zinnias than there should be in this little tub, but I don’t care. I’m not going to thin them out. What happens, happens – which has become my mantra this summer after dealing with deer, bunnies, and groundhogs. Though to be far, the bunnies haven’t been in the garden beds. They stick to the grass. If only their fellow creatures could follow their example.

We discovered a series that we love. We’re very much late to the party because it is currently on Season 6! I don’t know why we missed out on it until now. It’s called Black Mirror. Have any of you watched it? It’s an anthology series out of Great Britain and each episode is a stand-alone drama. To quote from the blurb about it: It is a “contemporary reworking of The Twilight Zone with stories that tap into the collective unease about the modern world, particularly regarding both intended and unintended consequences of new technologies and the effect they have on society and individuals.” The actors are terrific, the stories completely compelling, beautifully produced, and let me tell you, after each episode Don and I are immediately immersed in a deep conversation about what we’ve just seen. EXCELLENT. I recommend it highly.

Okay. I’m going to try to get out there early today. Maybe I can push that mower despite the struggle with the front wheel drive.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

good luck with and prayer said about the lawn mower/mowing! glad you are mindful of the weather.

i don’t function or feel well in humid weather, either, or when the temperature get above 80 (unless i am fortunate enough to be able to get in or on some water, which is not very often) and am definitely a cooler-weather person. 45 to 65 works best for me, and especially if it’s overcast or raining. that doesn’t happen for long, but since i’m not moving way up north, i just try to pay attention to the forecast and (like we all must do) make the best of it.

i like the photos of the flowers … almost there and pretty as is.

the tv show sounds interesting. glad you found it.

errands here this afternoon, hopefully some painting tonight.

happy friday! stay cool and safe!

I’ve only seen the episode with Annie Murphy and it was great. I will have to go back for more. I love zinnias too!

That series sounds good. I’ll have to look it up. Loving the flowers. I did the same with the zinnias at home. I don’t like to thin unless absolutely necessary! I like the full look.

I just started watching Black Mirror, too!
Also, I don’t do well with hot and humid weather either. When I wake up in the morning, my body can tell if it’s hot and humid even with a fan and an air conditioner going in the house. It’s just not a good feeling!

Claudia, it’s smart that you’re mindful of the weather and your reaction to it. The news lately has had clips of people hiking in the heat and having to be rescued….just saw one this morning. I bet your container with all the zinnia seeds will be beautiful when they’re all out!

It was very tough this morning but we were done by 10:30 am and we came in and took showers, turned the a/c on and I’m just about to take a nap.

      Stay safe, Barrie.

I have not seen Black Mirror but it sounds interesting.

I am surprised your bunnies stick to the grass. Too bad the groundhogs don’t have such good manners.
The deer around here don’t have good manners…they ate 2 of my hostas.
We have a birdbath in the same area. Its cement and the top isn’t attached to the pedestal. It’s quite heavy. Something knocks it off almost every night. We need to get a trail camera and see what happens during the night. It would have to be something quite big to knock it off. Fortunately it hasn’t broken…yet. My guess is the deer but not sure how they are doing it.

Be careful mowing. Pushing a mower that’s not self propelled must be tough.
    Take care

It depends on the year here. Some years, the deer eat my hostas – and others, they leave them alone. It used to be that they didn’t bother things at all.

      Same with groundhogs.

      Stay safe, Marilyn.

Gosh, Claudia, don’t overdo in that bad weather! Take care! Sounds awful. Gloriously cool in Southern California; at 9am it was only 60 degrees although very overcast with that coastal marine layer. Very grateful; we’ve had such hot Fourth of July weather in other, recent, drought-ridden years.

I’m not sure. Netflix changes their programming all the time. You’ll just have to check out the menu and see what looks interesting. They do have a lot of Nordic Noir mysteries there.

Zinnias are one of my favourite flowers. Such a beautiful range of colours. I don’t want to wish my summer away but the heat and humidity are so bad I’m almost wishing for the -ber months , my favourites. Oh, well, we must endure. Stay cool in this hot weather 🌞. Hugs, Elaine

You’re doing a grand job with all your garden hard work! I do know of Black Mirror and I can vaguely remember my son watching it many years ago, on British television, before he moved out but I didn’t take much notice. For some reason, I thought it was a crime drama set in Toyko.
Anyway, I shall have to take another look.

I can recommend an excellent BBC series called The Capture. It has two seasons. Holliday Grainger (whom you may recognise from Strike) and Ronald Perlman star in a gripping drama about CCTV. Not sure whether it’s showing in the States.

    Happy Friday

I don’t watch Strike. I already have a vivid picture of the characters in my head and I don’t want to mess with that. Thanks for the recommendation, Dee Dee.

Good to have a TV recommendation, we will need a new series soon. Our current watching is an Australian series called Dead Loch, which popped up on our feed saying something like “if you enjoyed Broken Wood (and we did, immensely) you might like Dead Loch”. Well!. I really can’t describe it, but will say that it is by far the coarsest thing I have ever seen on television. Only one season was made (evidently in ’23) so we are watching it to find out who dun it but I won’t be recommending it to anyone I know!

Our coneflowers are starting to open too. Last year some were gigantically tall and looks like this summer will be the same – as tall as me and I’m 5’6″. Zinnias always remind me of my Aunt Ginny and I need to plant some too. She always had vases of them in their farmhouse every summer of my childhood.

Black Mirror is on my list to check out. I actually had to write a list since I cannot remember what I want to see or what the heck channel or streaming service it’s on. It’s really helped my aging brain to have it on paper. A series we’ve enjoyed is “The Diplomat.” Keri Russell is terrific in it.

    Take care and stay cool.

Hi Claudia! It’s so hot her in CO, but we only have 18% humidity. I can’t even imagine what your day is like. Sounds like you know your limits which is important.

I love Black Mirror. We watched it when it first came out and I’m so glad they decided to go for a new season. I enjoy the frightening take on our devices and social media. Some hit too close to home. Can’t wait to watch. Take care!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
