Flowers and a Heat Wave

June 23, 2025 at 8:30 am by Claudia

The milkweed (and there’s way too much of it!) is blooming. The scent is so lovely.

As I type this, I can hear the call of a mourning dove. My favorite bird.

And the bee balm has started to open.

But the bee balm is getting crowded out by the milkweed, so I’m going to have to be more diligent next year. I’ll have to pull some of the milkweed at the beginning of the season. There are at least 30 plants in the big garden bed. I remember the first time I saw some milkweed on the property. It was up in the back forty. Then it gradually migrated down to the big garden bed and the bed in front of the porch. After it finishes blooming I’m going to check each plant to see if any eggs have been laid, If there is no evidence of any eggs on some of the plants, I’ll pull them. Don’t worry, there will still be plenty of milkweed left.

The high today will be 97. We are under an extreme heat warning with heat indexes of up to 110 degrees. Tomorrow is Don’s birthday and the high will be 99. Yikes! Luckily we had no plans except to have some sugar-free ice cream and that’s already in the freezer.

I won’t comment on the felon’s actions this weekend, except to say that we’re already discovering giant holes in this story. I think it will backfire on him.

For all of you coping with this heat wave, stay indoors, and stay cool.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Windy and sunny here. We’re supposed to get to 79 today but we still have a heat advisory. My baby mourning doves have taken off this morning. I can hear the parents calling to them but haven’t seen them. I need to water today so will probably see them if they’re nearby. A fawn was born across the street last weekend. Keep cool and a Happy Birthday to Don.
    Love you,
    Eileen

Don’t you miss them when they’ve fledged? I always do.

      Thanks, Eileen!

glad you and don put in the air conditioners and can stay home/indoors for having necessary supplies … like ice cream for your sweet don’s birthday.

hope the temperatures and humidity levels are low enough in the early mornings to give you an easier time for gardening.

your flowers are beautiful. through you (your words and clear, close-up photos), i’ve learned about so many kinds of plants and wildflowers (which we may or may not have here). that’s interesting, helpful to me as nature is (mostly) soothing to me, and needs to be respected and enjoyed. thank you, claudia.

to don … happy birthday (one day early)! hope you have a wonderful day spent exactly as you want and full of your favorite things. may your birthday be the start of a beautiful and blessed year for you and claudia.

    stay cool and safe!

Ditto all of the above, Claudia!
My milkweed “allotment” has been expanding itself for a while now and has serious runners under the pavers of my patio garden area… it now comes up in the cracks all over the place. I always leave some, but am more determined to remove it from the plants I want to nurture… chiefly the roses. And I try to cut it down before it seeds in the fall… but I always miss a few pods. I am ever hopeful that it will end up supporting a Monarch or two, but have yet to see them in my yard. It is possible that the area is too urbanized…. although there are plenty of yards around that do “No mow May”.
Happy birthday to Don and keep cool!

I love the scent of milk weed, too. That’s probably why the butterflies are attracted to it. Can’t even begin to understand why tRump hasn’t been impeached yet. Stay cool. Sugar free ice cream sounds delightful. Hugs, Elaine

A ‘Happy Birthday’ to Don from western NC. It’s terribly hot here, too–temps in the 90s. And the long term forecast says more of the same. I don’t do heat well, so I’m feeling rather sluggish.

You were quite restrained in your comments about that man. The only thing I ever found to like about him was his vow to keep the US out of war. And now this!

I need to go out to the studio, turn on the AC, and play with my Blythe girls. I’m trying to get some things sewed for them.

Lovely blooms. I hear you on the heat. I think today is supposed to only be 89 and heavy thunderstorms, Heat index 100. But that’s better than yesterday (apart from the rain.)

It’s Tuesday..,where did Monday go? Happy Birthday Don!!

I panted milkweed seeds I got from my bestie…that never grew. But this year we have two robust plants, growing in a strange place, but I’ll take it. Excited for blooms, and the expectation of what may come!

Stay cool…we got over 2 inches of rain last night…so cooler but still rainy and humid here. Enjoy your day! ;)

I wish we could grow milkweed here. Would love to see more butterflies. Most of my plants are done for the summer except for the trees of course, but the only flowering plants that are left for the summer are my bougainvillea, lantana and a few geraniums. Happy Birthday to Don! May you both enjoy your ice cream in your air conditioned home. I can’t comment either on the felon. I think you are right about this does not stop here. Stay cool!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
