Flowers, Books & Yarn

March 6, 2012 at 9:26 am by Claudia

I made the bi-weekly trip to Trader Joe’s over the weekend and came home with these. Aren’t they gorgeous? They’re waxflowers and I’m crazy about them. I like the wildflower-like big splash of color they bring to the living room. And look! There’s my pink milk glass hobnail vase.

I found this in a local antique shop a couple of years ago. It’s been nestled in my china cabinet ever since. I thought it might be nice to actually use it as it was intended…as a vase. This is one of my favorite finds. Such a soft, pretty shade of pink.

I wonder…can I plant some waxflowers in my garden? Are they compatible with my zone? Hmmm.

At the moment, we have an abundance of fresh flowers in the cottage. Some yellow alstromeria on the kitchen table, some mixed alstromeria in the den…

although the petals have begun to fall. Do you see the blue book in the foreground? It’s a vintage copy of Great Expectations that was just sent to me by my friend, Sharon. She enclosed a sweet note that said she was sending it to me because I ‘like old things and proper English.’ Oh, I do, Sharon! Thank you so much! An interesting accidental vignette, don’t you think? Charles Dickens alongside of modern day suspense/mystery writer Lee Child and my iPhone: When Centuries Collide.

Today I plan to pick up more rocks from the endless swath of dirt that is my front yard. There are a lot of them – we have rocky soil. I don’t want them there when I reseed. I’ll use them as edging for my garden beds.

The crocheting continues. And I am reminded that I have some prep work to do on The Tempest. Rehearsals start in just about a month.

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Silly me, the non-gardener! I actually thought they were…uh…wax! lol They’re really pretty, Claudia! Love the vignette, too. I have LOTS of those vignettes around my house. ;-)
Hope you have a great day.

I had a few extra minutes to visit and wanted to say THANK YOU ~ because I won your Prime Suspect book give-away. It makes me smile to think about it (:

Isn’t it wonderful that all it takes to makes us happy is a good book and fresh flowers.

Sweet husbands, doggies at our feet, gardens, friendships, the occasional vintage pottery find, and presents in the mail ~ all icing on the cake-o-life. xo

    Claudia,
I am sharing this with you as I love all things English, too! I recently discovered the writer, Wilkie Collins and I am hooked. He wrote at the same time as Dickens and his books are just pure pleasure. If you can find “The Woman in White”, do read it. It is the book that he is very famous for. Other great reads of his (that I have read so far) are
“Armadale” and “No Name”. I wish I had found him years ago. He has such a sense of humor and captures human nature in a way that I have never seen. I hope you enjoy!

I adore that blue grey yarn that you have there. You must be knitting up a storm.

Lovely flowers, wished that we had a Trader Joe’s here.

    Lovely flowers.

I love the ‘accidental vignette’. Centuries seem to collide around here, on a regular basis.

Thanks for dropping by my blog.

Pretty flowers! I love your pink vase. That color is so perfectly pretty! I use all my vintage vases too. In fact, I try to find a function for all my vintage finds. (It helps me justify the purchase a little more… even if only in my own mind!)
    Hugs,

I have been looking for the scarf pattern you’re crocheting. Would mind to tell me the name of it, please? I forgot and, although I’ve looked at several on-line sites, cannot find it.

    Great post. Beautiful photos.

Love the fresh flowers and the vase is divine! I haven’t read Great Expectations in years! I really must get back to reading and stop mindlessly pinning away on Pinterest! This summer my plan is to do some reading on my covered patio. Maybe I’ll pick up a few classics to read.

Your home is lovely! I still think that some of your photos of Riley and Scout would make great framed art.

    Hugs,

    ~Sandy

Your vase is gorgeous. I am sure there are plenty of wildflowers that would do well in your zone. Then you would have your own to cut!

The waxflowers are beautiful; I’ll have to look up info on them.
I see that lovely crochet garland in the background of the first photo. Ever thought of selling crochet garlands in your Etsy shop? Hmmm, just a thought; I’d buy one for sure!
    Have a great week!

So pretty Claudia! I love fresh flowers in the house and wouldn’t those flowers be great to grow outside in our gardens? I am expecting a fresh bouquet from my hubby today. He always brings me a bouquet when he has had to go out of town for a couple of days and he is due back this afternoon. Looks like you are crocheting another pretty scarf! Do you know if you can bring a crochet hook on a plane? What can I bring to cut my yarn? I am taking a flight to San Diego soon and want to calm myself with some crochet…I am a little bit of a nervous flyer.~ Hugs, Patti

Gorgeous! I grew them last year and it looks like they made it through winter so I have hope they’ll be back. It’s funny but I go to TJ’s mostly for plants and flowers not food :)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
