Flowers, Greenhouses & Cameras

July 15, 2018 at 8:16 am by Claudia

It stormed last night and we got a deluge. In the typical ‘extremes’ mode of this summer, when we get rain, it comes down so hard that it overwhelms the hydrangeas and the grasses in the gardens. And we’re getting more today – one to two inches. I’m happy we got the rain, of course, I wish we could have had something a little less violent.

Ah, well. Do I go outside and try to fluff the plants or let nature take its course? I’m not sure.

It was very humid yesterday, but we took an hour or so to visit my local nursery. The porch lobelia is looking a bit ragged these days and from what I read of lobelia, it starts to seriously sag come July. I also needed garden gloves. So I bought a couple of plants and two more hanging plants.

Now, I have too many plants because I can’t quite give up on the hanging lobelia yet. I’m not one to toss plants if I think they have still have signs of life. I’ll hang on to the bitter end.

Boy, was it hot inside the greenhouses!

Have I told you how much I’d like a greenhouse? I dream of a little greenhouse here on the property. I save pretty pictures of them. I wonder if I could build my own. The other day, we were in a neighboring town and a truck carrying a greenhouse drove right through the center of town. I was beside myself: Maybe I could commandeer the truck and divert it to my driveway! Maybe it was a surprise meant for me!

Alas, Don assured me it wasn’t.

Darn it.

We’re off to NYC for the day. The theme for today is cameras.

With – if it’s not raining – a little stop at the Community Garden.

Happy Sunday.

Ooooooh, my dream now that we have the room and I’ve fallen in love with gardening is to have a greenhouse. We’re waiting to hear from our County if we need a permit to put one up. For now, like you, I’m also dreaming. It would be lovely to have, especially in our climate!

Hope your trip to NYC goes well today. And your weather calms down so you can enjoy outside more.

I hope you eventually acquire a greenhouse, Claudia! I can’t have one because I live in a planned community that has sucky rules… no structures can be seen over the top of the fences. It’s ridiculous. My friend had to take down the garden shed she’s had for years because someone spotted it. It is so unobtrusive. Have a fun photography day in NYC!

“Too many plants”….now, that is hard to believe. I think a greenhouse would be lovely. Certainly, there are plans out there for something that is a reasonably priced DIY project?

Have a great time camera shopping…hope you can visit the secret garden! ;)

Too many plants ~ that is so funny!! I have a pole that has 4 hanging baskets. 2 of them are not doing very well, so last week I bought 2 new ones for replacements. When I took them down, my husband asked if he should dump them in the compost pile. I swallowed a little scream. Of course not! I was going to cut them back and see if they would “come back” after a week or 2. He wanted to know why I just didn’t do that and leave them up. When one has to explain something like that, we know that they will never understand.

I love my lobelia, but they are kind of testy, aren’t they. I have them in different pots and some are absolutely beautiful and some are just stragglers w/ few blooms. They came from the same place, in the same containers, purchased and then planted on the same day. ????

Hope you have fun in the city. May the rain hold off so you can have a walk in the garden. Safe travels!

Claudia, You are lucky to have rain there. We sure could use a two inch rain here. The lawn is the worst I have ever seen it. Dry, brown and crispy. I know what you mean about a greenhouse. So good to winter over plants . Make plenty of starts for the next spring flowerbeds. :):) Have a great day in NYC. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

Visiting nurseries is one of my favorite things to do! I always get good ideas (and usually a new plant or two). Hope you two have a great time in NYC. Looking forward to hearing about it!

I chop my lobelias in half at this time of year and they bounce right back. Worth at try! A green house is just what you need! Nice and cozy in the winter sun. We had one in our previous house and we had picnics in January and February. Can’t wait to see your photos.

We used to have several greenhouses and nurseries near us and that picture looks just like one of them. They are all gone now. We have a few houses that have green houses and sell plants of a specific kind to the people in the area. Get a little greenhouse and propagate your favorite plants and sell them to friends and neighbors. That is what I would love to do.

I love your house plants, they like where they are. If you rotate your plants they will grow straight and perfectly round. You really have a green thumb.

“Too many plants” it must be contagious, because I suffer from the same malady!! Hahahaha! As for your Lobelia, I agree with Betsy, cut them back. That’s what we do, here in California.
    Enjoy!

They’re trailing lobelia. I’ll give it a try. Thanks, Deborah.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
