Flowers, Phileas, and a Mess

May 2, 2026 at 9:01 am by Claudia

I stayed indoors much of the day yesterday to give my allergies a break. It helped a great deal. Since it rained all night (right after I had sprayed the plants to keep the deer away, grrr!) I’ll probably wait to do anything else outside until tomorrow.

I did venture out to get the mail and grabbed these pictures.

A bud on the shag hickory.

The lilacs have just started to open. Don told me he got a whiff of their heavenly scent so I had to investigate.

Don had an encounter with Phileas the other day. And we’re sure it’s the same frog this year. Don heard a splash in what we’re calling the Frog Pond, so he went over to investigate. As he stood there patiently, he sang the Phileas song he sang last year. Eventually, Phileas appeared and swam to the side of the culvert, popping up his head to say hi. It made Don’s day.

Started in on the baseboards for the living room. I was having ‘a day’ and couldn’t quite figure out how to mitre the joins in this strangely angled room. My solution? Fudge it. And that’s what I’ve done, if only to save my sanity. In the end, this project is for me. I’ll use a little spackle to cover up any space in the join. I briefly thought about painting the fireplace white, but that seems too matchy for me. I’m going to stain it in pecan, instead.

And lest you think I have things under control, this is the current state of the studio:

It’s a mess. A creative mess, but a mess. This is when I long for a larger space. Ah, well. I just saw some photos of my friend Gwen’s new studio and doll space and I’m incredibly envious!

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

too bad if the rain washed away all the deer spray, but maybe it cleaned the air a bit of allergens, to give you a little respite …? hope so. glad you took yesterday off.

though i always feel the need to tidy up (but don’t always do even though it’s something i enjoy doing), i love a creative mess! seeing other people’s work spaces and creativity in action are very inspiring to me. thanks for sharing.

eye appointment went fine yesterday … whew. :)

heading out in a few minutes to get some papers professionally and minuely shredded (free event courtesy of a bank). two big paper bags full, soon to be gone. that will feel good!

hope you, don and everyone else have a nice weekend. stay safe.

Hi Claudia! I Love your “mess”! It means you have been having fun! I think it is probably impossible to create, let alone live, without making a mess along the way. Yes, it needs to be cleaned up from time to time… and that is the distinction. Some people need the “blank slate” to be able to work or start something new, and some people don’t mind the chaff until suddenly they reach their limit and it is “too much”. It is funny, when I cook I can’t stand the mess… but for the other forms of creativity I can let it pile up for quite a while. And I know it piles up quickly with making minis… usually we are doing several types of work at the same time… like cutting the wood and staining it… so I know how you feel. But still, I am so glad you are having fun with this house at last! And given the number of odd angles in those bay windows, I think it is a wise choice to “wing it”. Otherwise you would drive yourself nuts and waste a lot of wood that was just a fraction too short! Besides, I happen to think imperfect woodwork is part of the charm of real dollhouses as opposed to museum pieces. Most of those little gaps will end up behind the furniture anyway! Lol!

My fourth doll would be this gorgeous sweet blond curly-haired little dutch girl. The creator is Marcos store. I feel like I should ask the seller for more details about the doll. I need more info , it that a good idea? Just not impressed with the description.

My husband would have have really bad allergies if he lived in such a lush area like yours. Come to the semi-desert area, you’d feel great.

Ask more questions and ask for more photos.

Semi-desert is too dry for me!

I like the way your creative space looks…it is creativity in motion.
I just love your Phileas frog stories, they warm my heart. Don singing to the little critter made my day.

    Take Care,
    Kaye

Yeah, a white fireplace would be too much for that room. The natural works better, I think.

I like your studio space — and can relate. At least you’re not working on the kitchen table! I can’t do art or a jigsaw puzzle at the same time! (Well, I could, but it wouldn’t be easy!)

I can’t seem to do a jigsaw at all lately. I think I need to take a break!

      Thanks, Jeanie.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
