A Fond Farewell (to my Peonies)

June 8, 2012 at 9:31 am by Claudia

Let’s take a moment together to say goodbye to this year’s peonies.

Toward the end of the day yesterday, I went outside to snip one last batch of blossoms.

I love this combination of McCoy yellow and the intense dark pink of the peonies. It reminded me of the 40’s era fabric I used to cover parts of the desk in the den. Naturally, I had to place the vase there for a photo opportunity.

Nature is the best designer. Who else could fashion such an intricate swirl of petals? And to top it all off, Mother Nature added the most heavenly scent. So heavenly that I can’t begin to describe it.

I’ve tried.

And I’ve failed.

Goodbye my most-very-favorite-in-the-world flower. Goodbye gorgeous peony bushes that I can take no credit for as they were already here when we bought the house. It was so nice to actually be here this spring to enjoy your beauty. I drank in every bit of it. Your time here is short and oh-so-sweet.

And as if they knew they had to step up their game, the roses are blooming like crazy. Thank you roses, for giving me a distraction in my time of mourning.

And thank you to the first batch of day lilies to bloom. This year you have more blossoms than ever!

I love my garden.

I added a thing or two to the little funky patio we have at the side of the house. I’ll share that with you tomorrow.

Happy Friday.

Spring flowers..so beautiful but short lived…fortunately (if you plan it right) there is always something else coming up around the corner…

Did your photo of the roses go missing, or is their mention a hint of beautiful pictures to come…

Oh they were spectacular. Why do all the best flowers bloom for such a short time?

I love the vibrant pink of your peonies. My peony bush is bigger this year but still has not produced flowers after several years in the same spot. What am I doing wrong? Maybe too many lilies encroaching on its space. Hope next year will be good or better!

I’m so glad you were home for your peonies this year! They’re so beautiful and have one of the best flower fragrances ever! So sorry to have to say good bye to them until next year. Thank goodness you have your roses to help ease the pain~
    Hugs,

It seems that things are just bursting with flowers this year. The peonies are perfect in that piece of McCoy. Beautiful combination.

Hi Claudia, I cut my last peonies a few days ago and had to post pictures of them–they are just such beautiful flowers. But now I’m looking forward to the orange lilies, and if the deer don’t munch them all in the wee hours of the morning I will take pictures. Then the hydrangeas will come, and then the glorious fall colors. This is how I deal with endings. Something new is on the way. Linda

I hate it when the peonies are done. Your McCoy vase is the same still my neighbor gave me in pink.

I love the combination of the the bright pink with the yellow too! It does look vintage and stunning together! I said farewell to the last of my peonies yesterday. I have a white bush that I planted last year and this year it had 3 blooms that lasted 3 days. The scent was heavenly and well worth waiting for! Have you ever been to Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor? They have a peony garden that had hundreds of different varities of peonies. It’s absolutely stunning! Too bad the flowers are so short lived.

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
