There are four babies. This is Dad and two of the babies – the youngest is on the left.
You can clearly see the difference in birth order. There’s most likely a two to three day age difference. So we have the baby looking very much like the photos I showed you the other day. And then we have the oldest, who has developed feathers all over his body and who is now experimenting with his wings.
This guy worries me. He’s constantly trying to lift his body higher in the nest with a little flap of his wings. Yes, Mama, keep an eye on him.
A few minutes ago, Mama was standing on the railing, sending out some sort of alarm call. She’s calmed down now. You understand, of course, that if I could, I would camp out on the balcony and protect these babies. I’ve already racked my brain for something soft to put on the deck below the nest so that if one falls, he’ll be cushioned.
Am I crazy?
Don’t answer that.
I see why the littlest birdies can stretch their necks so far. They have to be able to get their parents’ attention.

I am reading around blogland about a problem leaving comments. I haven’t run into that as of yet. I did have that problem a few years ago with Typepad blogs. One suggestion is to try another browser. Sometimes that can make a big difference. Also, clear your browsing history and cache. Then reload the browser. Maybe this will help.
Interesting that they’re different ages. I’d probably put a pillow of some kind underneath too so you’re not crazy. Or maybe we both are.
No Claudia, I hope you are not crazy because if you are then I am too. I am spending much too much time watching my nest, eggs and Momma Robin in the umbrella stand! I am definitely putting something on my table under the nest because I am thinking that if the nest was in a tree there would be some nice soft ground around the tree, not a table!! I think the babies only hatch one per day, because the eggs are laid one per day. I hope my eggs make it! About a week to go, we think. Linda

They also stretch their necks so that parents can get food all the way down their throats. No you’re not crazy to put something down below, as it makes you a wonderful steward of nature, however, they very rarely need it………but you never know!

OOOOOOOOooooooh!! (Aren’t you glad this is Blogland, and not the telephone up to your ear?!!).. I LOVE these little babies!!.. And YES, I would be setting out pillows, old crib mattresses, sleeping bags, and whatever I could find to break their fall, if it should happen! Beautiful photos, Claudia!!!.. As for comments, I don’t know what to think. I’ve gotten fewer lately, but I didn’t know if that was because of Blogger, or if people just didn’t like what I was publishing lately! (Actually, I STILL don’t know! LOL!).. But I see we are both missing our followers! (sigh.. WHAT now?!).. Well, keep us posted on the little Bird family!! I love seeing and hearing about them! ~tina

My baby robins are about as old as your oldest.. all four hatched the same day and are doing great despite their mother’s poor choice of location. In a few days they should be leaving the nest. I have a pic on my blog today of their progress.

Claudia, I am finding that I can leave comments (at least on your blog), but I can’t get into my own blog to edit or add new posts. Frustrating for sure.
Are you crazy for trying to put something down to cushion a baby bird’s fall? No. And if you are, I’m right there with you. When we had our old 4′ high above ground pool, we had a very sad incident where one of our backyard Sammy squirrels fell in and we found his little lifeless body. There is absolutely no way to climb out from the inside of the pool because the walls go straight up.
Determined to NEVER let that happen again, I tethered one of the girls’ foam boogie boards to the ladder so that half of it was in the water and the other half of it protruded up and over the sidewall of the pool, forming a sort of ramp. Darned if another squirrel didn’t fall in, and this time we were in the backyard and saw it. He was able to swim to the boogie board and get himself out. So do I think you are crazy for cushioning the fall of a little bird? Nope! hahaha

i think some cheap pillows from Target are in order. I love the babies, they are getting big so fast. I have had a ton of trouble leaving comments so I am glad I am not the only one. Liz and Viv arrive tomorrow for a quick visit.

That is so cute! I had a nest in our front porch light a couple of years ago and took pictures all the tme too! You have really captured them at the right time! I have been having trouble leaving comments only on certain blogs. I tried clearing my history, cache, cookies and it did not help. How beautiful your pictures are! Your Blogs always so Lovely! We have doves fall out of the trees in the Spring here and its a shame. Ive brought some to a Wildlife Rehab place here, but its no guarantee they live. But you know the Bible says that the Lord sees every sparrow that falleth! ox

I think it is not often, but anyway I have seen baby birds laying on the ground- or just hopping around ,without being able to fly, if danger appears…
