Friday, No Blue Skies in Sight

May 3, 2019 at 10:20 am by Claudia

Okay. I’m going to moan and grown for a second. Another day of gray skies, colder than usual temperatures, and rain. That seems to be our Spring. The sunny days have been the rare exception and it’s getting both Don and me down. We keep busy, but come on! Enough already!

Plus, the weather forecast is all over the map. I’ve never seen it change as much – and, on a dime – as it has lately. Yesterday, I mulched the memorial garden bed. I was about to mulch another garden bed when I checked the weather app. Rain was due at 3 pm. The front lawn was really overdue for a mowing, as we’ve had so much rain. Don wasn’t home. So I hauled out the mower – I’m still not in full mowing mode muscle-wise – and I mowed the front lawn. If I hadn’t, the grass would have been impossible to cut. I made an ‘executive decision’ because I knew Don would want to be in on the mowing, but I felt I had to do my best to outrun the rain.

I finished, put everything away, came in the house and took a shower, looked at the weather app again and, in the 90 minutes since I had made the decision to mow, the forecast had changed from a lot of rain at 3 pm to some ‘drizzle’ in the evening. What the heck? Last night, it looked like there would be two sunny days next week – Tuesday and Wednesday. Today’s change in the forecast? Rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. And every other day of the week.

Screaming.

Okay. I’ve gone on too long. I know many of you are going through the same thing. As Don said, “We went through such a long winter, don’t we deserve some sun?” He really wants to take photographs, but so far, there has only been one weekend – 3 weeks ago – that wasn’t rainy.

Thanks for your patience. I won’t rant anymore.

Flowering quince. There aren’t as many blooms as last year (lack of sun?) Or did I miss them? They’re also somewhat buried in the bush making picture taking difficult.

I took this late yesterday afternoon as Don and I were inhaling the scent of the lilacs. I was entranced by the different shades on the blossoms.

More lilac beauty.

Even with all the gray skies, there is so much growth in the garden beds. There are changes every day and I’m, as always, fascinated by them. Watching green things grow is better than watching a movie. And that’s saying something!

Happy Friday.

That quince blossom is just my favorite shad of red—soft and without any hint of blue—perfect.

Lovely photos! I can almost smell the lilac. I’m at work trying to avoid looking out the window at the snow flurries blowing past (again). Did the weather gods not get the memo about it now being May?

Actually, I’m glad you ranted…or else I’d have to do it. We were supposed to have a warm sunny day today. Warm being relative…low 60’s, but I’ll take it. Instead…mostly cloudy…and some rain (?) this afternoon. So…my work outdoors maybe limited…I’m already off to a late start.

Lovely lilacs! At least you have that. Enjoy your Day! ;)

not that you need anyone’s permission, but rant as needed (i do the same)! hope you get some sun soon, too.

a friend uses a national weather app and it often makes drastic changes in the forecast sometimes within a couple hours, just as you described. i go to our local tv stations’ websites for the forecast, trusting it will be more accurate (and i think it is).

love seeing all the greenery popping and the buds and flowers coming out here, too. about time!

hope you all have a nice weekend.

When I’m outside, however, I don’t have time to go put the television on to get our local forecast! Have a great weekend, Kathy!

It’s sunny all week here, but maybe some rain Sunday, Claudia. Weather so unpredictable and variable. Car stuff all week…. oil change, now seems like one car has a rear light that needs replacing, and the other car has some tire pressure issues. Sigh, I so despise taking care of cars. It was my husband’s responsibility since I could never muster the interest even in going to get gas! I don’t often moan about the weather, but boy, can I moan about car maintenance!

Well, I didn’t complain about the weather when I lived in CA, either! Except for the Santa Ana winds – they were another story!

Cars are a pain in the tush! I agree!

Hi Claudia, it’s dreary here too, although yesterday we were able to sit on our dock for a while in the early evening, no rain but it did get buggy. That color of the quince flower is gorgeous! Hang in there, making soup today because it’s till soup weather!

Ah, lilacs! One of the few things in the world that’s as beautiful to look at as it is to smell. It really is so very pretty. And don’t get me started on all the colors! All my favorites – purples, blues, pinks, roses, whites. You’re so lucky to have some nearby. Lilacs – and robins – have always meant Spring to me. Oh, and pussy willows. We had a pussy willow bush in our front yard when I was growing up and I just loved it. I always thought of it as almost an animal – because of its name – when I was little. I liked to “pet” the soft little furry buds [little kids are weird, aren’t they?] Mom would cut a few branches and pair them with some forsythia or lilacs in a tall vase. If we were really lucky for Easter, but whenever. And I just loved seeing them all together. Hope you get some sun soon. Generally overcast here right now, but not a dark overcast. I think the Sun is trying…. 🌤

I can commiserate with you regarding the rain, and the sudden changes in forecasts! The weather has been so unpredictable. Your blooms are beautiful. 19 more work days til my retirement and the weather better shape up as I’m looking forward to many hours outside putzing around.

If you want to rant, go ahead, it doesn’t bother me. If I were to rant, you would not want to hear. Yours is merely weather and everyone rants about that. Where I am we say, “We don’t tan, we rust.” And someone said” We have four seasons, Rain, Rain, Rain and Construction.”

Reading your “rant” was almost as good as doing one myself. Living vicariously through your blooming pictures since all we have so far are some hardy daffodils. The tulips never make more than a few inches above ground level – the deer eat them. But, most importantly, we had SUN today for the first time all week!!! I dragged my pansy pots out from their garage prison and set so their little faces were pointed towards the sunshine.

Rant on sweetie! We all need to rant. We are having great weather in the PNW and all next week. Maybe you will get it after it leaves us. So hang in there, have some coffee, read a book! I’ll be heading outside with my squirt bottle full of vinegar. I spray the green stuff that is coming up through the cracks in the driveway. Vinegar and sunshine will kill them and all the cats and doggies and little children can walk on it and it’s not poisonous. Have a good weekend.

Rant away — you aren’t alone. Even when it’s not raining here (and has every day this week) it’s cold and gloomy and damp. I don’t think it can go on forever… but I sure wish it would stop soon.

    Your flowering bushes/trees are gorgeous!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
